Sony Ericsson Xperia Play finally announced

Breaking

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play handset hasn’t exactly been a secret, but the journey ends (and begins) today, as it’s finally official. It’s the first Android device to feature Sony’s Playstation Suite gaming app and enviroment, and is scheduled to appear by the end of the year. The Xperia Play runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU with 4-inch 480×854 resolution display. There are, of course, the PSP-like game buttons on the slider part of the phone, a front facing camera, 5 megapixel rear camera, 512MB RAM, and a microSD card slot.

Looks awesome, I hope it makes phone calls. Does anyone know if it’ll have SWYPE?

Once they finish with the beta, there’s no reason for it not to have swype! ;)

It’s obviously great. It has DROID running on it so it’s the ultimate gaming machine. Better than any games on the iCrap.

Looks amazing. I’m very curious to try out the device out, especially since PlayStation Suite will allow access to PS1 games. But what has me the most curious are the supposed “analog touch pads” I see. I really need to see a video of them in action. Price.? Probably a lot since I know we Americans are going to have to buy it unlocked.

Check engadget for the videos from a month ago…. Check android central for the Verizon announcement BGR can’t seem to keep up.

    • Egad

Actually, it’s coming to VERIZON! (pcmag had the scoop)

1GHZ snapdragon? 512 RAM? Other than the physical buttons, what soes thid thing have that the EVO doesnt?

Seeing as how this comes out at the end of this year, I’m kind of “meh” about this device, especially considering more powerful, dual-core android phones and tablets will have access to the same suite of games and will arrive much earlier.

Comes out this spring on Verizon…..just announced by android central. And it’s a gaming phone not evo competition

Why the hell does it have to be the end of the year?

    • Todd

Because there’s a heck of a lot that is required to put it into your hands. Most consumers don’t appreciate what it takes to go from proof of concept, to a fully released product.

      • Tim242

It has been around for almost a year. They said releasing in the Spring on Verizon.

    • Tim242

They said releasing in the Spring on Verizon.

Looks pretty awesome, but by comparison i guess i would just as soon rather get an Atrix, or Thunderbolt, as both those phones would be more gaming friendly having dual core processors and all.

    • Tim242

Thunderbolt isn’t dual core…but it is wicked fast!

Yes exactly what we need, another reason for obese americans to sit inside and play Playstation games on their phone when a ps3 isn’t available to them.

What it really needs is a slide out treadmill.

    • Tim242

      LoL so true (I’m a 115 lb. 31 y/o American male)

  • i told u so.com

yup the specs are ok, but releaize that only right now HP’s Pre 3 has the new Qualcamm 1.4 gig cpu which most companies will not get their hands on until the 4th Q. Funny though besides that it has the same resolution, rear cam, and ram as the Pre 3 yet its not a great phone lol. Funny how puppets follow puppets, bottom line is with HP’s scale, 10k apps avail this summer, and a slab and BB type version coming this fall with even stronger components(only HP has this kind of partnership in the world with Qualcamm) and Webos being the superior OS, as anyalist say they will be catapulted right behind Apple in the mobile game. Android is inferior to Webos, and IOS and always will be period.

    • Tim242

You keep living in your fantasy world full of delusions.

    • Chrisjb14

HAHAHA! 10k apps?! thats so amazing! i think their number one app is a bible app because theres nothing else out there.

  • Tim242

    Releasing in March on Verizon.

  • Elliott

Is the front facing camera confirmed, because no other site is mentioning one, including sony ericsons

    • Anonymous

Phone Arena has a front camera listed in the specs. (I was wondering about it too)

  • Ghz

This should be a hit with the kiddies.

    • Dale

      Ghz,

I agree ! Especially, the ones here at BGR. And, it should really be sold at Toys R Us along with the other toys.

  • theteenwhoknowsaboutotherteens

as far as i know, teenagers now a days don’t even use Playstation 3′s a lot… it’s more X-Box 360, maybe X-Box should do a phone like this, damn that would sell a hell of a lot of phones…

    • it’s me!!

lets be real…anyone who wants to get taken seriously wouldn’t buy this phone. imagine if your at a business meeting, trying to exchange numbers with a business contact..”hold on, wait sir…circle, circle, circle, square…”

    • Anonymous

Xbox is more popular in th USA playstation is worldwide and sells more…..!!!!

I’m curious about those two “analog sticks.” Do they physically move at all? Or are they touch buttons? Someone elaborate please!
