Motorola XOOM $799, HTC Thunderbolt $249 at Best Buy

mobile

The gang over at Droid-Life have gotten their hands on this week’s Best Buy circular. What do we learn? We again see that Motorola’s XOOM tablet will retail for $799 and users will have to purchase at least one month of mobile broadband service to activate the tablet’s Wi-Fi chipset. We also discover that the HTC Thunderbolt handset will retail for $249 with a signed 2-year contract and $749.99 at full retail (which seems extremely steep). The flyer also confirms the February 24th release date we told you about yesterday. Thoughts?

I don’t think any boycott is needed seing as any sensible consumer would say “f that” and wait for the price to come down, or at least for them to lift the wifi block, which is possibly the most dick thing Verizon has ever done to one of their devices. Who cares if you are getting it with 3g anyways, it still so lame.

To be fair Best Buy overprices everything at full price. The 16 GB iPhone for Verizon costs 699 at Best Buy and it’s 599 at Apple. They did it with the Galaxy Tab too FYI.

        They will price match though

Regarding the out right purchase price: The Evo 4G is $599.99 at Best Buy, while it is $499.99 at RadioShack and $449.99 directly from Sprint. So it is no surprise that their price on the Thunderbolt seems outrageous.

But, how long after its initial release did it take before the other carriers had that price?

So in California, where Arnold Schwarzenegger had the brilliant idea to enact legislation making the tax come from retail price, the tax on each phone if you walk into a Best Buy in CA will be $75. That shit is fucked up

      Damn!

10% sales tax.. Ahnold didn’t get you PUMPED UP? Whats wrong with Callyfornyeeah? You got a weakling for a governator.. [worst governor ever]

Wait until you buy a $40,000 vehicle, w/ 10% tacked on, plus CA formulated gas and CA emissions.. It will cost like 2 million dollars

Look I’m an economist. Granted I don’t work at Verizon or Motorola but they gotta get these price points lower. Really $800, I mean come on. I can’t reasonably justify this over a comparable priced laptop. Motorola subsidize the loss and price the tablet at <$500, capture market share and THEN raise the price to recoup losses.

With these prices, Verizon needs more competition. Maybe the iPhone should have stayed on AT&T to drive competition.

When will people understand that buying cell phones outright at Best Buy is WAY more expensive than buying them at the carriers’ stores?

  • Hipkey

If this no contract price is real I wonder if is tied to their buy back program which they will begin charging for tomorrow. Makes sense since the buy back rate for cell phones is based on this.

I still don’t know about that Xoom pricing. However good it is, see a lot of inventory collecting dust.

Does anyone here do any reporting anymore? Best Buy’s off-contract prices are always significantly more than the off-contract prices that you buy from a carrier. HTC EVO, for instance is $699.99 off-contract at Best Buy, while it’s $449.99 from Sprint.

    Come on, Engadget.

The full retail price is a kick in the ass…$50 additional premium tax even though we buy it with a 2-year service contract in CA. The full retail price is so arbitrary it sure gets frustrating sometimes.

    $749?! What is this Apple?!

    • Tim242

No, it’s Best Buy. Their retail off contract prices are always crazy high.

Thoughts, yea here’s mine. I got by last month wanting and waiting so I expect I will keep on getting by until the compition heats up and the price comes down to the lower atmosphere at least.

I’m curious as to what I can do about complaining to Best Buy seeing as when I preordered with them last week they informed me that the release date would be on the 14th. If they dont have a solid date they frankly shouldnt be telling customers that they do.

I agree…I did the same thing last Sunday, now they don’t have it in stock yet….GEEZE!!!

Gimme, gimme, gimme…… My Evo has been great, much better than an iOLDphone, but this thing will rock.
