HP TouchPad planned for June, priced at $699?

Exclusive

One of our sources has just provided us with new information surrounding the launch of the recently unveiled HP TouchPad. It’s been communicated to us that HP is (or was — it’s not clear if things have recently changed) planning on having the TouchPad in market before the end of June. We’ve also been told pricing should be $699; slightly less than Motorola’s $799 XOOM. How does June and $699 sound for an HP TouchPad?

Since there will likely be several versions of the touchpad, why would they set this price and not release other version prices. At this time we know the wifi only version will come in 16 and 32 GB versions. That alone makes it valid to have at least two prices leak. the lowest iPad it $499. the lowest TP will have similar specs and should also be $499.

for a 16gb wi-fi only tablet? It sounds like a “fail” to me.

Anyone remember when laptops first hit the market? $3k was the norm. Tablets might seem expensive at $700 but considering the history of electronics it’s really not that expensive and prices will eventually go down.

For now if you want a cheap Tablet then go shop at Wal-Greens.

Let me repeat: You manufacturers are losing to Apple on price! When did that become an option for any company?

Too high price, too low specs & with an OS almost nobody wants.

    It will flop royally.

You meant to say an OS everyone wishes they had, right?

I sort of hate to say it, but I don’t think HP/Palm learned anything since the Pre introduction. That looked to be a great product when it was introduced, but it was more or less made irrelevant (on many fronts) by the time it actually shipped. And then it was a game of never-ending catch up and too little too late. These pre-announcement products look awesome when compared to the current batch of Apple products (which is the obvious yardstick here, like it or not) but it’s a fool’s assumption to think that Apple is standing still. They have a pretty predictable record of trumping their own products on every major refresh. Competitors need to aim way ahead of Apple instead of just firing a shot across the bow.

The usefulness of this OS in this form factor is pretty good from what I hear from someone “in the know”. This might make me dump my ipad and possibly my iphone. This might be a killer combo purely from a usefulness standpoint. Again-not for everyone, but tempting for my world-synergy and great UI with some more apps please@ $ 600.00!!!

Seriously, no way can they determine price now. What with the XOOM and iPAD2 already been released by the time this puppy has been out – it would be silly for this thing to be more expensive. The market will have been saturated with so many tablets. It is silly for us to even debate what HP will price this thing at 4 months from now.

i would have to compare to what the next iPad offers first. I am interested in Palm’s next tablet (I am not saying HP, just no…) and webOS is very interesting to me. I plan on basically buying 3 tablets at once on a credit card and returning the 2 that fail to make me the happiest

Going to have to be very compelling to sway purchasers off the iPad, especially with v2 coming out soon.

as much as i would like android or webOS to succeed, my wallet will vote for the ipad2 – its going to remain aggressively priced is my guess. hp/motorola better figure their supply chain costs out. consumers are already enamored with apple products more than competing hp/android products. if pricing is not competitive, hp will not attract enough customers including me to even bother figuring out their products. simple economics. you dont need an MBA to figure that out.

    tempting, but still too expensive.

$799?! What a shame. This was a great idea (even with a minuscule number of apps). Pricing this right was key.

Well, it’s not out yet so we’ll still have to see.
