Hitachi spits out 4.5-inch IPS display 1,100:1 contrast, 329dpi density

General

It’s been rumored that Apple has been spending billions in cash on a strategic displays investment, but other manufacturers and component suppliers aren’t standing still, either. Hitatchi Displays has just announced that they have a 4.5-inch IPS LCD display lined up for production in October. The new display’s resolution? 1280 x 720 which, in a 4.5-inch screen, equals a whopping 329dpi density. It’s LED backlit and features a 1,100:1 contrast ratio. Oh. boy.

4.5″ is quite big for a mobile. Personally prefer a smaller screen on my devices. 4″ max.

That DPI will be very nice though on any device though!

      ever used EVO?

I have to admit, 4.3″ is just right for me.

      • Anonymous

Exactly. Once you go 4.3″, you won’t go back to anything smaller. At least that’s what she said.

    First true hd screen. Nice!

What’s true HD? 720 and 1080P? What if a tv had a higher resolution display? Would it be super HD? Hd is just what people call it for marketing a 480p resolution on a small screen is as good as a 50in 1080p tv

Now they just need to attach some bogus marketing term to it like apple does. Only apple can make people think that “retina display” has any meaning beyond aesthetics.

    • Anonymous

I actually think the whole “retina display” thing from apple went over the heads of their non-techy demographic…which is most of their demographic…

I’m pretty sure that of all the things to complain about from apple (and there are a lot), their marketing technique is not one of them. I don’t no if you’ve noticed, but the iPhone is pretty popular.

Apple spends billions in cash on strategic display investment.

Hitachi comes out with 4.5″ screen at 329 dpi.

Companies not named Apple take advantage with zero billions of cash invested.

Other companies like HTC who had to cancel orders and lose tons of sales on the Droid Incredible because they weren’t able to secure enough AMOLED displays due to all the Android phones coming out with the exact same specs, while Apple’s investment allowed them to make as many phones as they wanted to due to pre-buying supplies. Fck, now you gone and made me have to Google this shyt.

Apple’s $4 Billion investment was made in September and December, months after the iPhone 4 release, so it had no effect on how many iPhone’s were produced.

Also, Toshiba denied the investment was for retina displays.

Also learned that Samsung is starting the OLED production line June 2011, so anyone wanting SAMOLED displays after that will be able to get it – still with zero investment needed by OEMs.

This is coming in October, i.e. THE FUTURE. Apple’s investment was for…THE FUTURE! What Samsung does later has nothing to do what Hitachi does later, the AMOLED example was showing what happens when you don’t have secured technology, you get in line and face a potential shortage.

tl;dr Supply is limited, Android manufacturers are numerous, chances of one company benefiting from this, 0.

A great deal of this is probably going to secure current and future 9.7″ displays for the iPad. This is the most expensive component of the iPad and if they can cut the cost on that they could in theory easily cut the price on the entry level iPad to $399.

They did the same thing with flash and that’s also a reason they can add 256GB of flash (custom, not SSD) to the MacBook Air without it costing half a fortune like the SSD in the Macbook Pro

    • Rob

What are you talking about. How much money do you think it took for hitachi to develop this screen. Just because apple doesn’t allow other manufacturers to use the tech it designed and hitatchi designs tech specifically for other brands, doesn’t mean the development process was cheaper. Also, just because you read an article with impressive specs doesn’t automatically make it better than everything else. Who knows what apple is making and how it will compare to this.

Law of diminishing returns. On small screens, HD is wasted.

    • Joel

Not true an HD picture is more crisp and clear on a 32 inch TV than a 50 inch the reason 1280×720 is the amount of pixels in the screen 1280×720 takes bigger pixels to fill up a 50 rather than a 32.. Resulting in a slightly more pixelated picture put 1280 x 720 in a 4.5 screen and you’ll have the best HD picture on the block

      • Jimbo1

Umm…. I’m not talking about 32 inches, I’m talking about the article (4.5inches). That is a HUGE difference. At 4.5 inches, HD is irrelevant. The human eye cannot resolve the detail that is technically present on a 4.5 inch screen when talking about HD resolution

    • serpentor

Not if you work in the marketing department.

  • Oldgeek143

At what point is the improvement considered marginal especially at 4.5″ ?

I doubt anyone is spending billions as was mentioned.

Pictures Hitatchi or it didn’t happen!

  • Gabezermeno

  • Rob

They better develop an hd battery to go with it.

  • AnnDroid
