Skype updates iOS app for Verizon iPhone; video calling coming to Verizon, Android sets February 28th?

Software

Two quick bits of Skype news to report. Today, the internet-based communications company has posted an update to its iOS client. The new code allows the app to function on the Verizon iPhone and adds H.264 support. The additional MP4-codec will allow users to place calls from their iOS device to a wider range of Skype-enabled devices, including TVs.

The second, less official bit of Skype news comes courtesy of blog Droid-Life. The site has acquired information that indicates video-calling capabilities will be coming to Skype mobile for Android — for Verizon Wireless devices only — on the 28th of February. Unfortunately, it does look like  those with LTE, Android handsets will be the only ones able to utilize the voice calling capabilities — it is unclear whether you will have to actually be connected to Verizon’s LTE network to initiate a video call. We should know more in the coming weeks.

    F-F-F-F-F-FRAGMENTATION!

Hmm, no mention of why the VZW iPhone needs it’s own version, but I guess BGR doesn’t want to be bias and point out the fragmentation issue anymore than it has to.

You’re not reading it right. there’s no specific skype for the verizon iPhone only. They’re adding support for it so it can behave better on the VZ network.

Indeed, I’m a call and movie lover, so I get most of the movies on my iPhone through ifunia iphone converter. I think other will do the same once they try it and realize it is the perfect phone:-)

so i noticed google talk added video capability. is that comparable to skype or is skype still better?

      It is comparable.

Skype, this is why fring is better as their service is for all phones and devices.

Er, this update isn’t required for Verizon iPhone compatibility as far as I can tell…there’s nothing “Verizon specific” and no fragmentation. They’re just promoting Skype by connecting it to the Verizon iPhone release.

This update is all about H.264 and Skype for TV compatibility…that’s it.

So only Android phones on Verizon got Skype lol, that’s plain sad, what happen the the Android open world. I’m afraid there’s people that don’t have a clue what the Android Fragmentation is.

maybe its just me, but skype kinda sucks balls. i keep deleting it and re downloading then realizing it costs more than to just call from cell phone so I end up deleting again. Its a love – hate thing.
