Pre-order your Pre 2 on Verizon Wireless with the Pre 3 looming

mobile

We have to admit, HP’s timing on the Pre 2 in the U.S. is a little funny. Just one day after the announcement that the Pre 3 will be here this summer, HP and Verizon Wireless made the Pre 2 available for pre-order. You can reserve yourself the webOS 2.0 handset for $99, with delivery occurring on February 17th. We’re not sure why anyone would opt for the Pre Deuce with the Tre set to drop this summer, but it’s nice to have options. Anyone out there with that crazy look in their eye going to order the Pre 2?

I think the REAL question to ask here is:

“Is anyone batsh!t crazy enough to own a phone that hosts less than 1000 apps?”

    • Anonymous

Apps are the downfall to a phone!

People are paying hundreds of dollars for phones that are bare bones now! And then willingly paying money for apps that do what would seem basic on a phone that costs hundreds of dollars!!!

Then again, car companies have been doing this for so long that I guess some people are just “used” to this.

    • Kld2009

HP’s app catalog has almost 6,000 apps

      • Yoyo

……yeah cause that’s so impressive, 6,000 apps for a device barely anyone wants *twirls finger in circle*

      • Jon

6,000 apps is a lot; name a 100 that you use!!!!

Apple used app numbers as a marketing ploy to benchmark success and now that’s how people, like you, judge phone OS’s… you are stifling progression!!!!

    • Tanyamaniwan

I don’t need thousands of apps, just the ones I use.

Yeah someone screwed up there. I’m sure Verizon did a face-palm when they heard HP announce the Pre 3 this summer.

      Face-PALM! Get it?

Why in the hell would ANYBODY purchase the Palm Pre 2 when the Pre 3 comes out in a few months?

Why in the hell would HP decide to post the pre order as the Verizon iPhone has came out?

Why didn’t the Palm Pre 2 came out on Sprint?

Why did it take so long for it to come out at all?

Why hasn’t there been any heavy marketing?

Why hasn’t it came out on AT&T?

The management/marketing team needs to be fired

I think the Pre2 was scrapped for the US market and they are just moving excess inventory at a reasonable price. Also, the Pre2 is quite an improvement over the Pre Plus, so not a bad deal at $100.

$100 off contract, maybe. For $99 more, in return for two years of servitude, there are far superior devices.

The only theory I can surmise is that the Pre2 is being released now on Verizon because, although the Pre3 will be released this summer, it will not be available on Verizon, at least not initially. There were reports on Pre Central from “inside sources” at Sprint regarding their decision to pass on the Pre2 which indicated that they had done so in order to wait for the successor to the Pre2, something bigger and better. If that is the case, it would explain both why Verizon is now releasing the Pre2, with the Pre3 around the corner, as well as why Sprint passed on the Pre2. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking :-)

exactly, especially when the Pre 2 won’t be upgradable to the next version of WebOS

  • Anonymous

I agree, this doesn’t make much sense. I think HP feels the need to have something out on the market on a large carrier, even if only for a few months. It doesn’t make sense for the consumer to purchase one though, especially because it won’t be upgradable to the next version of WebOS.

You sure this one won’t be upgradable? It is running WebOS 2 now, which is supposed to be the same OS as the Pr3. It is the original Pre that they announced yesterday will not be upgradable. The Pr3 has a better outside (screen, camera, front camera, etc), but this one may have the better inside (processor) that allows for WebOS 2.

I don’t think Verizon is innovative.

I used Palm for my entire corporate life and This latest set of announcements drove me to android. No upgrade to 2.0 sealed the deal. Just got strung along for over a year with “in the coming months BS. No thanks HP. Find another sucker.

enjoy google gobbling up your personal data.

but yeah I hear you. I’m on a original pre and am stil not sure if the new device will be on sprint, which sucks. I’d never, ever, ever, ever, EVER use android though. NEVER.

plus there’s yesterdays news that theyre working on a fix…http://precentral.net/hp-hears-you-ota-update-issue-working-something-make-things-right

      • Yoyo

Yeah that makes sense avoid the best OS on the market that comes with some of the best hardware on the market and continue using a Palm phone………..btw you realize its 2011 now right might want to accept Palms death by now.

      • Anonymous

        To each his own.

I know what I want. Android ain’t it. webOS isn’t perfect, but it’s far closer to what i want.

Palm’s not dead. It’s actually stronger now than it’s ever been.

      • GaryDL

…and you are happy with the original pre?

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I’m def. happy with it. Just looking forward to being able to upgrade without changing my carrier.

  • FiredMotoExec

lol or DONT. Who in their right mind would order this POS?

  • http://twitter.com/REOsince1991 michael eddy

Screen size will be easier for one-handed use than the 3 1/2. Also, the processor is adequate for a phone. Price good. Why not buy? Besides, real men own more than one device for mobile use as we recognize there is no ideal form factor that does it all without compromise. Most apps are for the TMT (Too Much Time(free))) crowd anyway.

This phone has a snowball’s chance in hell in selling. With the iPhone 4, Pre3, Droid X, Droid Pro,and Samsung Fascinate

They should have given these to a third world country and took it as a tax writeoff.

Holding out hope that though the Pre + and Pre 2 went Verizon Pre 3 will come to Sprint. My Pre Minus is barely holding on.

Ima pass own dis. Ma Boost is still werkin good son!

  • MushroomStampN

Not much different than VZW releasing the iphone months before the iphone LTE version comes out.

  • http://rmbo47.myopenid.com/ rmbo47

There are still some WebOS fans, but not as many as when the Pre first came out. And how many developers are going to work on an OS with such a small (and shrinking) user base? Losing the developers is the beginning of a death spiral.

The timing of the Pre 2 and Pre 3 is also seemingly ill-conceived. I can see a FEW people wanting a slightly smaller device than the Pre 3, and for them the Pre 2 is there. But now many will go for that?? A couple dozen?? Looks like Palm’s awful timing has infected HP.

  • Chris

Even Blackberry thinks Palm is dead.
