RIM’s 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook to be priced at $499; launching in late April?

Tablets

According to a leaked screen shot from Office Depot, the 16GB iteration of the BlackBerry PlayBook will be priced at $499. The aforementioned image also tips a launch date of “week 17,” which would put the device’s release somewhere between April 24th and 30th of this year. The price point of $499 is right on-par with other 16GB tablets currently in the market. As for week 17 of 2011 (April 24-30), it makes complete sense to us. Week 18 happens to be encompass May 3rd through the 5th… the dates of RIM’s BlackBerry world conference set to be held in Orlando, FL. That’s your PlayBook rumor du jour, thoughts?

This once again makes the Xoom’s price seem retarded.

      I agree..

They really did screw that up. I really don’t get it. At all.

    • Midi45

Hp touchpad will be around 500 too. The Xoom will fail horribly. Android and overpriced = no one cares.

    • haha

      sure does

    • wiz

the xoom to me looks inferior to the playbook – with everything I have saw the playbook looks the best plain and simple & now its got the best price too…rims got a winner on its hands

  • http://twitter.com/chrispgriffin Chris Griffin

It’s a decent price point. Would love to see it lower (like any reasonable person would), but I will still get it. I’m just glad they didn’t follow Motorola’s lead…

Can’t wait to pick one of these up when it’s released to see if RIM’s entrance into the tablet world is better than their try at an all-touchscreen smartphone (Storm)

    • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

cant argue with u there. the storm is just awful. people always complain that Berrys always look the same., but why fix something if its not broken? thats my philosophy. I keep switching between Berry and Android and I ALWAYS come back to BlackBerry. Android still has too many problems. especially with security. not as bad as iphone but still pretty grim

The anticipation is killing me. Wonder if I (or any other devs) will ever get the free one RIM promised.

  • ck

supposed to be 1st quarter, I think March 15th is the day, although you would think we would hear more from RIM 30 days before launch. I too would like a better price point but will still buy b/c Im a BB user

  • Sean76

And the xoom is $800? No logic at all! Somebody needs to get smacked at moto

  • Anonymous

$499 is a good start point

  • Max

But but but but but but I thought you Blackberry MORONS always said ‘We like that Blackberry keyboard!” Gotta have it, you morons said. That’s what made it a Blackberry, remember? Now this device comes out and…no keyboard? Waaa hoppen, Morons? And 7″ is too small. Too small to use at home, too big to tote around. God you morons need to move into the 21st century, will you?

    • max :(

      drugs are bad…mmmkay

    • Tyler Durden

Not understanding your logic. A tablet with a keyboard would have just be a laptop with touchscreen capabilities. The Samsung Galaxy Tab has established that many people have no issues with a 7″ screen

    • Rz

7″ tabs fit in a Jean pocket. Quit wearing spandex pants and get off the apple bandwagon.

    • Retireat55

It’s stupid to say 7″ is too small – Was 7″ too small for all those portable DVD players that sold in the past? Is 7″ too small for all the e-readers being sold? Was 4.3″ and 5″ too small for all the GPS units that sold? …..People are going to buy what suits them….Lots of people are going to buy 7″ tablets, lots of people are going to buy 10″ tablets, and idiots like you who can’t think for themselves will buy whatever Apple tells them to buy…..

    • Anonymous

Apple sheep quiet calling people morons. We all buy what we want you continue to walk under uncle Steve’s brainwashing power. I swear how to think for yourself should be thoguht in all Universities as a prerequisite to graduating.

      shut ur cocksucking mouth, faggot.

    • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

learn some new words. besides “moron” and ” give me cock”, faggot

    • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

your mom thinks 7″ is too big. faggot.

    Playbook >iPad2

      Touchpad>playbook

      • http://twitter.com/chrispgriffin Chris Griffin

Actually, it kind of looks like Touchpad ≈ PlayBook.

      • Anonymous

Touchpad does not have a HDMI, rear camera or 1080p recording, gesture support, real multitasking like playbook .

      • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

if ur gay, touchpad is better than playbook, so u must enjoy wang in ur face. cuz HP and everything they sell suck major balls. as do their consumers. keep gargling jizz. ur doing great.

Would love to see this sooner. RIM is not a hype machine like Apple. They cannot keep people’s interest for too long without releasing it. On the otherhand, RIM really needs to get this correct for launch. It has to be smooth as butter and no bugs or else the media will completely destroy it before people even buy it.

    • Anonymous

that’s why they are focusing their core group which is around 100 million users, even if 1% get the playbook they will have a modest success and prove a good word of mouth publicity for the rest of the BB users.

    • Apachuka

I have never seen a BB OS without bugs. It’s seems like virtually impossible for them to create something functional, so why others bet on this oversized papwerweight is beyond me. Make sure you locate the battery cover, because you gonna be pulling the battery on this daily just like all BB phones needs to to operate at least a half a day.

$499 is not bad but i don’t think that if the current 16GB iPad was price at $499 a year ago, it will be price the same this year. My guess is that Apple will discontinue the 16GB model and replace it with a 32GB and price it at $499. The price doesn’t look bad if it was going head to head with the current iPad but that time is almost over.

    • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly–if history is any indicator, the next iPad will start at the same price point as the current one, only with double the memory. The PlayBook, therefore, is going to have a smaller screen, less memory, and far fewer apps, yet will be priced the same as the iPad. RIM needs to knock $100 or so off the base price or it’s doomed.

      • Anonymous

how will playbook have less memory the ipad2? it currently has 1GB RAM and ipad2 is not going to have more than that.

  • Anonymous

RIM has already briefed us prior to the corporate beta program (kicking off in the next week or so) and the price we were told is $399 for 16gb.

  • Jimbo1

I hate to say it, but the PlayBook looks mighty good. The QNX acquisition was a slam dunk and it shows.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joshwithachance Joshua Pingley

the PlayBook is my favorite tablet so far. I may have someone get me one for my birthday now, since my birthday is in April. muwahahahahahah.

  • Anonymous

The Playbook is a slick product but i think RIM lost a little focus and direction in jumping into the tablet market. RIM is the corporate worlds #1 business handset (@ least where i live), so i was expecting them to target the corporate world first by producing a tab that will augment the BB tightly. then focus more on about 200 solid home made business applications and functionalities, name it something more appealing to business execs rather than “playbook”, advertize the business rather than the social feature of the TAB and DITTO, they have a following right from day one. They can then enter the social realm where iOS and Android owned the space and lay their claim

let us be very realistic, why did i say 200 apps?
    1. how many iUsers have more than 200 apps installed on devices?
    2. How may andFans have 200 app installed on their devices?

meaning of the zillions of apps available on the two most popular platforms, users actually use a few of them.

  • RudyH

As an avid BB fan – too late

If RIM could have had this out in February as planned, it would have silenced critics. Apple should be out in April with their iPad 2.

    • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

nobody cares about the ipad2. the only diff is the screen. whoopty fuck. still the same old garbage from an inferior shithole. and a 30 day delay wont harm the playbook at all. too many smart people out there who know BlackBerry has always and will always be the most secure, reliable, useful devices with the most amazing battery life of any smartphone on the market. No other company can match what RIM does. only idiots and people who follow actually think android or ios is better than blackberry. if its better, why do almost all business and government use RIM? security. because at the end of the day, nothing is more important than our security. and android / apple dont offer any.

  • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

if its true, thats pretty awesome. the playbook only costs as much as a BlackBerry smartphone. Good strategy. my question is what about OTA updates? thats neer really been RIM’s strong suit.
