Motorola ‘wireless tablet with embedded WLAN’ hits FCC; Wi-Fi only XOOM?

Tablets

Not really digging the $800 price-tag set to be placed on the 3G Motorola XOOM tablet? Help may be on the way. A recent filing shows that the FCC is testing a “wireless tablet with embedded WLAN” manufactured by Motorola. Now, there’s no way to know exactly what this is… but our money is on a Wi-Fi only XOOM. The tablet in question, being referred to as the IHDP56LU1 in documentation, is only having its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi a/b/g/n chipsets tested — there was no mention of a cellular radio anywhere. Hopefully, with wireless carriers out of the picture, Moto can get a little more agressive with the pricing.

Sorry, guys. I somehow doubt a 3G/4G version will cost $300 more than a wi-fi only version.

I don’t imagine the wireless carriers would ever force Motorola to charge more for a device, since the whole point (for the carriers at least) is to sell data plans, which they can’t sell to anyone who lacks a device. The reality here is that Motorola simply lacks the capital to build this device in a manner that would keep the price any lower. . .remember that the 3G 32 GB iPad s $729.

Having said that, since the best selling iPad is the $499, wi-fi-only 16 GB model, they better find a way to turn a profit at that price if they really want to compete.

Anything more than $500 is out of the question.

I knew they’d come to their senses

      Nook Color for you.

If its a 32GB… count on $600 min. There needs to be a 16GB version made available for $500, which has yet to be announced.

    • Randall

Doubtful. Apple increases there models by storage space. That strategy is not the norm. 16gb to 32 gb flash memory costs alot less than $100. Probably less than $5.

I’ve been following this since 2009. Moto or verizon must come to their senses

$500 and I definitely buy it. $600 and I consider it.

Same here, but I’m thinking $600 would be a fair deal considering the hardware.

32 gig wifi only iPad is $599 3g is $729. Motorola needs to at least mirror these prices, if not drop it a bit lower. Only because the dedicated apps aren’t there for it yet. Granted, most of the apps made specifically for the iPad are garbage, only about ten percent are decent. And the rest ar merely ipad friendly web pages. Still being second is when you can’t charge as much as the leader. Not if you ever want to be first.
