WSJ: Apple iPad 2 in production already; thinner, lighter, faster

mobile

According to the Wall Street Journal‘s sources, Apple’s next iPad is already in production. People “familiar with the matter” have chimed in and claimed that the new iPad will be much thinner and lighter than the existing model. That’s not all as it looks like a front-facing video camera will make its way to the device, if you didn’t believe it already. Topping the list? More memory (1GB of RAM, we’d wager) and a more powerful graphics processor. Unfortunately it seems the display won’t be changing much as far as the resolution is concerned as it’s being reported to be the same 1024×768 resolution. Last but not least, it’s claimed that the new iPad will be available on AT&T and Verizon Wireless, though T-Mobile and Sprint won’t have the honor of retailing the tablet.

Finally an ipad (1st gen) killer!

  • W123

Wow what a let down – playbook it is for me – multi-tasking and flash woulda been welcomed for ipad2

Hopefully the Xoom pricing can compete!

    • Dario69

At $800 for the Xoom, I highly doubt it. But maybe you were being sarcastic since that price point was announced a few days ago..

      • http://www.henryhelmes.com Henry

I am interested in the subsidized pricing because I am definitely going to be picking up a tablet this year with 4G WAN. Not sure which one yet…

I entered a contest in Dallas to win a xoom last week and they have it valued at $500. FWIW….

Xoom is going to sell well but the restrictions on that will again keep it under the iPad’s boot.

Yeah! Cameras! Welcome to last year!!

      ^ WIN ^
1GB RAM = last year also.

Hardware specs, if true, seem to be like going from the 3G to 3GS. While an improvement, nothing to get too excited over. I would speculate that we won’t see some really spectacular hardware changes until the iPad 3. I’m mostly looking forward to seeing what Apple is going to do to make iOS more tablet-y.

Funny, ’cause people were expecting a great leap forward with iPad 2. Now, these same people are talking about waiting for iPad 3. You can justify anything, I guess. Let’s admit it (for now, okay?). Xoom and PB are waaay ahead of what iPad 2 will bring to the market in terms of specs. True, the PB will not have have the robust apps “ecosystem” (another one of those overused words) like Andorid or iOS platforms but there’ll be enough apps to satisfy big majority of the people. Don’t need 300K or 200K apps.

  • Dario69

Ah yes, my plan is working perfectly. Get the wife hooked on the iPad then justify buying the iPad2 so she can have the iPad1 all to herself. Yes, perfectly.

    • BilleBob

Wow! Someone that thinks just like me!!!

I am surprised that even sprint is left out.

These favoritism things are a joke.

    • Allen Walker

You’re honestly surprised that a subpar carrier isn’t getting it?

As always the duopoly makes themselves stand out.

    iPad2 – yawn2

    • Aaron

      Correction
      iPad2 = iYawn2

lol @ the possibility of them keeping the same 1024×768 resolution, really? lololol.

  • Drew

While Apple continues to play fuck fuck games hardware-wise, how about they do something magical to that stale and tired OS…

    Not mentioned in the article:
the new iPad will also extend into a pod and be a portal for inter-galactic travel.

    • Anonymous

Sorry Papito, that’s only doable with Android. You know better than that!

Nothing here folks. For people who must own Apple, wait for the iPad3.

    • Jadehierro

yes i must, but goood one, maybe ipad3 give me more stuff, example: 1024*768 please? they can give more, see you in 8m or less….

  • Xray5

Cool!! I can’t wait to NOT buy this craptastic tablet. Hello Playbook with dual core, QNX and full Flash coming to my house very soon.

  • Timeinsf

    iPad2 —nothing magical!

The power of the Goofans (aka Apple Haters). We know about products, due to how intelligent we are, even before they are announced. Can you imagine this POS iPad 2 compared to the XOOM 2 when it comes out with a XEON processor??? No way iPad will sell 1 let alone be a hit!

I prefer the greater customizability of Android to the greater simplicity & elegance of iOS. I want choices and power. I want Flash, USB ports, removable memory cards, and a removeable battery. I will also admit the little I’ve seen of Android 3, “Honeycomb,” feels new, fresh, and exciting!

    • Dario69

Enjoy “choice” with rushed hardware and a lack of software. All at a great overpriced value. Xoom at $800, Samsung Tab initial release at $600+. Yes, the prices go down, eventually but Android is a way for manufacturers to gouge their consumers. I once thought Apple was priced at a premium until recently with these new tabs and Android phones. But ultimately it comes down to available apps. After a while that Android tablet is going to feel very lonely due to a lack of quality apps. Enjoy choice.

  • Changer

I’ll try out the new PlayBook when it arrives. It’s a lot lighter and more powerful. I’ve been wanting something more portable with a bigger screen and 7″ would be perfect. Along with a host of other apps, I’d love to use it as a GPS in my vehicle as well. Suh-weet!

A faster processor and more RAM? Wont’ this cause the dreaded F RAGM EN T A TIO N? I can see it now. New apps in the app store labeled HDx2, only usable on the iPad 2.

    Really, WSJ?

Let me guess… the iPad 3 will have a faster processor, better camera, will hold more data… that is the dumbest fucking story the WSJ has put out in awhile. Way to state the obvious without stating any ACTUAL facts.

I’m not knocking BGR, but it is silly to have a post on what the WSJ says what the next iPad will be like and it states nothing that isn’t already known or speculated. I thought the WSJ got their tech info from the likes of BGR, Engadget, and Gizmodo, not the other way around.

    • Jack

Actually, many in the tech blogging world feel that WSJ is fed information directly from Apple. That may or may not be the case, but it’s hardly fair to say that WSJ just simply reposts what they read on other gadget blogs.

How’s that Blackpad…whoops…nice name there, RIM. How’s that Playbook coming along, morons? Get your 8703e attached to it to sync your email, morons. Live in the past much, RIMjobs?

  • Dave1

I am an Android phone guy, but the iPad has such a lead in tablet specific apps that I will probably buy an iPad if I get a tablet in the next 6 months.

    • Dario69

I know exactly how you feel. I was an Android user, prior to that a WinMo user. I hated Apple but the iPad just seemed like a logical choice when compared to the Android offerings. Maybe it was due to owning an Android phone and seeing first hand how juvenile the product still is. That is the fact the Android market just stinks so how should one expect the tablet market to be any better. Especially comared to the iPad. Since then I have bought an iPhone4 and use my Android for work. I picked “choice”, as in choice of apps.

      • Dave1

Well, I still like the phone interface better. Customizeable home screens are far superior for the way I use my phone than rows of icons, but I would pick an iPhone if there were almost no android apps like there are almost no Android tablet apps.
