AT&T support page shows Captivate running Android 2.2, proves it’s possible

mobile

If you’re a Samsung Captivate owner that is feeling as though both your carrier and manufacturer have forsaken you, cheer up. We have a very small, very dim, ray of hope for you. One of our astute readers pointed out that AT&T’s support page for Sammy’s Captivate, the one that explains how to find your operating system and firmware versions, actually shows the device — complete with TouchWiz — running Android 2.2. Samsung released the Galaxy S over seven months ago, promising its users a quick upgrade-path to Froyo. Currently, with Android 2.3 in the market and Android 2.4 on the way, the company has yet to provide the update to several of its U.S.-based Galaxy S handsets. Hopefully, this screen shot is an indication that the upgrade is actually on the way.

      As are most of us.

Do most of you turn around these phones and make make their cost or are you constantly losing 200-300 dollars?

      • Anonymous

Im gunna sell it and get probably 200 for it, and use it to buy the Atrix. I bought the Captivate for 150 BTW off Craigslist.

I may lose something… not much. But i got to use it for a year. I will get at least $100 for it when it is 2 yrs old. probably $150 or more now. I paid $199 for mine on contract, and it is unlocked.

I’m constantly losing. But its more like $100 it so. Which is manageable when feeding my bad phone habit.

  • AT&T vs Verizon Question

Will the Atrix get better cell coverage than other AT&T phones because it is on HSPA+? I’m in Washington DC and have had terrible experience with AT&T coverage, so I switched to Verizon. If the Atrix will have fewer dropped calls, though, I’d consider going back.

Dude if u live somewhere like San Fran, NY or somewhere like that u are gunna have bad service on ATT no matter what phone u have…where i live i have great coverage, i have for the most part better signal strength than VZW (my GF has VZW) and much faster data, so for me its an easy answer ATT > VZW because of where i live…it all depends on where u live dude.

    • Dragon

In DC and the metropolitan area it varies. For I stance near the White House it’s usual for one carrier to get signal and the other not, but AT&T seems to get more reception.

Having had a BlackBerry and now an iPhone I can assure you that if you have an iPhone on AT&T, that the dropped calls are a fault of the iPhone’s poor radio stack and poor antenna mores than At&T’s network. Lots of Verizon iPhone new users are in for a shock when they discover that the source offhand dropped calls is Apple, not their carrier. :-(

I just wish BGR or some other site could turn the heat up on AT&T and get an answer. Until the end of December Samsung assured everyone it was going to happen by end of year. Then they switched to their “testing… experience…. blah blah blah” cut and paste line. There is no reason that they couldn’t provide more status info – all they do is alienate their customer base. We already now that statistically HTC and Moto are better bets for updates, and VZW is better then AT&T – so if I were a consumer buying on statistics… i would not pick AT&T.

Except that Verizon is no more likely to support updates than AT&T, because like the OEMs, the carriers want you to keep upgrading your device so that you remain under contract. It’s not a question of anyone putting pressure on the carriers or the OEMs; they’re simply offering a product that many are choosing to buy. If updates are important to you, and you know some manufacturers don’t support them, then don’t buy it.

Android users remind of the iPhone users who complained about missing features but bought the thing anyway, apparently not realizing that the greatest power they had was to (collectively) not purchase the device.

        What features? iPhones are feartureless.

Those screenshots have been up since the Fall. :-/

It is still 2 builds past the leaked Beta (UCJI6) that came out in October…. I would be happy with that. All the custom Roms have one issue or another….

  • Drummer84

I’ve been running 2.2 on the captivate since september with roms and such.

Ah, the advantages of being open!

    The cake is a lie

I feel the pain that nonrooted samsung user are going through but rooted users love the galaxy s. I will take samsung’s hardware and screen over the rest easily as long as I can root.

  • Gentooguy

I have been running 2.2.1 on my Captivate for the last two months with ROMs from XDA. But hey, its good to know that 2.2 is possible.

    Thanks for nothing AT&T.

I don’t know what people are complaining about. The beautiful thing about android is that you can have a new phone with amazing new features every couple of days. That said, sell your phone on eBay and get a new one. That’s the beauty of being open!

    • RFMD

      you’re such an ignorant troll.

  • http://twitter.com/ChromeDome00 ChromeDome00

Samsung says via Twitter: For questions about at&t’s site, please contact @ATTCustomerCare. Samsung has not released Froyo for the Captivate. ^Mary

So this mess is clearly a Samsung issue.

You should have the option to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.3 stock Android from a central resource, bypassing the Touchwiz, Sense, Blur skins. At least then you would have the option of waiting for the official upgrade or going to the new stock OS.

Must be a very frustrating customer experience for those that don’t get the upgrades quickly. The fact that Samsung is one of the slowest does not surprise me either. Based on my experience with them with a non cell phone product I made my mind up never to deal with them again.

    • Club968

You do, its called buying a nexus S……

    • Anonymous

I wish, but they all have their versions of Android baked into their drivers. They would have to program their drivers separately for stock… which would take a long time and something they would never do. Sad…

For what it’s worth, there is a Froyo build posted on VZW’s internal test site for the Fascinate (EB01).

  • at&t store rep

I’ve learned not to get my hopes up anymore.

Running Cognition on my Captivate and it kills Touchwiz. Even if the official update came out I wouldn’t even bother. I get Mobile ap, Flash and a much faster device with zero bloat. I use it as my secondary phone and when I think I’ll need Hotspot since I don’t have to add tethering plan.

  • Robemrox

who needs to wait on AT&T or Samsung when theres a plethora of custom 2.2 or even 2.2.1 Roms out there….

  • Btswein

I noticed this about 2 months ago, having said that, WHERE’S MY FROYO AT&T!

  • Guest

Under att’s news feed there will be a new feature for $45 with 4gb data with wifi hotspot when the new htc phone is released on feb. 13th. I’m sure att has been waiting to update the captivate until this feature is released so they can charge for the hot spot that is available on 2.2. Att is not dumb.

  • Itsjustmee

“proves it’s possible” ARE YOU FREAKING INSANE?
and you claim to be experts???
it’s been available on XDA SINCE OCTOBER!!!!
OF COURSE IT FREAKIN RUNS ON CAPTIVATE
it’s AT&T and Samsung refusing to honor their commitments that’s the problem
