Sprint to announce new Kyocera phone at press event, report claims

mobile

Sprint’s press event tonight will yield a new Kyocera smartphone dubbed “Echo,” according to a report from Bloomberg Businessweek. Further information is not available for the time being and the moniker Echo doesn’t seem to be a great fit for theme of magic and illusion suggested by the invitation seen above, but Businessweek seems thoroughly confident in its source. Sprint announced last month that it would hold a special press event tonight. With Dan Hesse on hand alongside special guest David Blaine, a “master illusionist and world record holder,” Sprint promises to announce “yet another industry first.” Kyocera is most certainly not the first handset partner that comes to mind when carriers hold events like these, and we’re all the more intrigued as a result. BGR will be on hand at the event tonight and we’ll be live blogging all the action from start to finish.

I sure hope not..why would I want a facebook phone when I can use the app and use my computer…If this is what they are saying as an industry first. Go to **ll sprint!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

So at first I thought it might be a tablet, but now I guess it will be a phone… or a mini tablet. heh

It does say see what Sprint has up its Sleeve… but this is so underwhelming if true.

up its sleeve = wrist phone?

  • Steel

Why does Sprint always schedule its reveals for the early evening? After the day’s news cycle?

    Ew, Kyocera.

  • serpentor

BGR, what kind of blog have you become that you can’t even get the scoop on the announcement?

    i am disappoint.

sprint is actually advertising that they still sell Kyocera crap? LOL. I would be too ashamed to admit it publicly. kyocera is terrible. Sprint u suck. please file bankruptcy and save yourself the embarassment. NOTHING from Kyocera is going to do well.

sprint hardly sucks but i do agree that kyocera sucks

Maybe David Blaine is going to make AT&T disappear, finally! That would be a great industry first (for both AT&T and Cingular).

  • Smartguy

WTF!? Kyocera!? The producers of the lamest phones of all time, come Sprint. Aligning yourselves with losers like Kyocera & Davis Blaine is recipe for disaster. Notice how VZW & Att always go at it & now T-Mobile is going at Att & VZW. With campains like this Sprint is killing themselves. Oh I get it Sprint is intentionally trying to destroy their stock value so another company can buy them, Ok now that makes sense!

  • Tee

Hahahaha… Kyocera. I thought this would be the first glasses-free 3D cell phone. But it’s a Kyocera? I didn’t even realize they still existed. Lame.

    • Chut Pata

Exactly my sentiments. I thought Kyocera now existed only in museums. What is next? Sord, NEC, Vic-20?

  • Greg

If it’s a Kyocera, I hope David Blaine makes it disappear because that would just be a sad and disappointing announcement Sprint! Step your game up or you’re going to get left behind.

Be sure to ask them about the Epic 4G Froyo update.

They had to hype it up. Kyocera? Why don’t they just start selling phones from Coby.

    • Anonymous

Better yet, why don’t they just start selling “do-it-yourself-at-home” plastic surgery kits?

  • Itsjustmee

what if you found nothing but smoke and mirrors up their sleeve? again?
would you finally start looking for new leadership?

  • Anonymous

They’ve kept it secret for a whole month. clearly their big announcement is how they kept a secret for a month, that or they waited until this morning to throw something together. Ah, college I can still remember the days, well some of them, others were blotted out by a drunken haze…

  • cashmoney

if this is true, which would be a HUGE dissapointment, they could have saved themselves the money, the embarrasment, and put up posters around the store, and probably sold the phone just as much as they would have with this announcement, and really, who the hell is kyocera in a world of apple, htc, etc?

    • Asdf

If this is just a lame announcement, I am switching to ATT.

    what’s kyocera????

    ATTENTION SHEEPLE:

Welcome to another uneducated and ignorant blog post about a company that this blog in particular has no agenda for. I’m sure many of you are unaware of what goes on “behind the scenes”. However, I am completely in the know, and let me educate you on what happened in this instance…

Verizon PR goes to blog, donates 10k, tells blog to put this sprint hype to bed. Blog runs story about Sprint failing to come through, and honestly expects people to believe that they are serious about insinuating that Sprint is making a big deal out of a phone from a company (kyocera) who makes budget phones.

You sheeple sub consciously start to care less about this announcement, why?, because you do what you’re told like good little hipsters.

    Mission accomplished. Buzz Killed.

Think for yourself, you’ll be suprised…

    • cashmoney

i guess in the long run that is absolutely possible, but im already with sprint, have been for 10 years now, have no reason for changing carriers, and just hope that part of this announcement coincides with palm/hp’s event on wednesday, which is what i am REALLY looking forward to… webos 2.0 ftw

  • Badchad

I bet they have new plans with increased fees and less perks “up their sleeve”.

  • Maxey Tim

Sprint needs to wake up. People go with phones more than networks. Look at iphone and att. Get the high end phones and customers will follow…

    • Anonymous

How true: I signed on for the EVOOOO on launch day, June 4th, and if it hadn’t been for their deplorable outsourced customer service calling centers, where they seem not to understand English, I would still have my EVOOOO. But, alas, there is a GOD after all, and he brings us ThunderBolt¡₣

Sent from this crappy Droid X!

      • Anonymous

… sprints call centers are all in the usa. Hate to break it to you o yea and crappy cs good luck on verizon lol

      • Tx26257

I have been with Verizon for years and yes no company is perfect but there customer service has always treated me great. always helped me out sorry they didnt help you

  • Anonymous

Told you this when the story broke, courtesy of my personal insider.

HTC. Three camera sensors (two rear facing). Think about it. Why would a phone need TWO camera sensors on one side? Happy guessing…

    • http://twitter.com/iMarky_Marc Marc Jarvis

O.o well that would count as a industry first

  • the guru

sprint is going to bring a 3d iphone today!!

  • drew dogg

Haha! All the Sprint fans thought they were getting an iphone! Haha! Seriously check bgr’s post that day they all said iPhone.

Sprint dares to go past what is possible. To the place where the possible and the impossible meet, to be reveal… the possimpible. The phone with true Visitivity
