J.P. Morgan: Verizon iPhone 4 pre-sales surpassed 500,000

mobile

Using a bit of guesswork, J.P. Morgan analyst Phil Cusick calculates that Verizon Wireless’ pre-sales of the iPhone 4 may have topped 500,000 units. In a note to investors on Monday, Cusick cited information contained within an earlier press release from Verizon Wireless to take a somewhat educated stab at pre-order totals. According to Verizon, pre-sales of the iPhone 4 broke the carrier’s previous first-day sales record in just the first two hours of availability. Cusick states that the prior record for single-day handset sales was 100,000 units, set by the Motorola DROID last November. Using that information along with the knowledge that Verizon Wireless and Apple continued to take pre-orders for another 15 hours before pulling the pre-order pages from their respective websites, Cusick estimates that over a half-million orders were placed. Cusick believes that Verizon’s iPhone 4 will go on to beat the DROID’s opening day, opening weekend and opening week sales totals, and he estimates that first-quarter iPhone sales will easily top the DROID’s fourth-quarter performance of 1.6 million units, as well.

WWJD – What Would Jamie [Dimon] Do? Clearly, he’d fawn over the iPhone too. Too bad Verizon Wireless isn’t publicly traded or this Cusick fella might’ve made Jamie some money…

Yay for competition! I’m excited to see the fire put under the asses of android OEMs to continue to streamline their products. I couldn’t care less about the iphone, but I love what this will do for android!

    • Chut Pata

You are wrong. Verizon getting iPhone did not put Android under pressure. Actually a lot many Apple fanboys who hated AT&T, shifted to Verizon. Now iPhone is not AT&T’s flagship product, and they are emphasizing on Android phones. Atrix, the laptop in your hand, is going to be AT&T’s flagship product. Then a couple of years later Verizon will follow. LOL.

      • apachuka

Your assumption, that the new iphone owners are the old iphone owners is completely wrong. You really think, that the majority of the VZ iphone4 buyers were ATT customers? HAHA! Do you know who are the majority? I’ll tell you: sh1tberry users screwed by RIM, Android users and possibly newcomers to the smartphone market. Those who may migrated from ATT are a tiny minority compared to the first 2 groups I mentioned.

      • Anonymous

You tell ‘em Chut Patita! And the Atrix is NOT a laptop but a super computer at the level of a Cray Research machine. But not just because of the hardware but also the most advanced OS EVER built!

      • Jon

I thought that the iPhone 4 preorders were for existing Verizon customers only…

      • Sergio

Come on man… how dare you rain on the iPhone haters parade with your stupid facts.

LOL 1.6 million “dumb” people will by last years technology and cry in about 4 months when iphone 5 launches.

    • Scott

And in those 4 months they will find out how boring the iPhone is. I Can’t wait to get an Atrix!

      • Anonymous

Talk about a pocket rocket! I wonder how the vibrate feature will be affected by the dual core processor. If you have it in your front pocket, will you feel it in your back pocket? Or better yet in your back *?

    • Anonymous

But at least they’ll have this year’s software, instead of buying an Android device and watching Google release updates they’ll never see.

      • Anonymous

Oh my Gosh! All you have to do is buy (or by, if you are a Goofan aka Apple Hater) a new device when a new one comes out in 2 weeks. YOU iDiots have to wait 4 months! How’s that for smart????

    • Anonymous

Hey calm down! You don’t seem to mind that your mom uses one as a pocket rocket. She at least understands that Android is fragmented crap on sub par devices.

      • Anonymous

Hah! Oh no you din’t! Oh no you din’t!!!!!!

      • Anonymous

That was funny, offensive, but funny.
For all you Rocket Scientists 101:
you only prove that you walk around with the same mentality you exercise in the bedroom. True: Apple makes its’ iOS available to older devices but, it neglects to market to the masses that the older hardware is obsolete and, therefore, not fully supported by the newer iOS version. Hence, an iPhone 2G/3G is crap on iOS 4.1.2; pretty much like this CRAPPPYYYYY Droid X. When will you guys learn that, it’s the HARDWARE and NOT the software. Your latest iOS updates need a good dose of Viagra to work on those “older” iDevices. I won’t lie, if this iPhone had been suited with an LTE radio and a 1.3 Megapixel Front Facing Camera (instead of that ghastly 0.3 Front Facing shooter) I, too, would have ordered at 3AM.

      • Anonymous

Why would you drop your EVOOO for that piece of crap! I don’t care if it has a 20MP front facing camera with iReach technology! First, it’s NOT Android and as a result it doesn’t have the Touch Me technology which will be making Android EVEN more powerful and beloved this year.

        2nd, well, it’s NOT GOOGLE!

      • Anonymous

        @GoofanAKAAppleHater
Dude, where have you been, I sold my EVOOOO in November (good profit) because I encountered Sprint’s horrific outsourced customer dis-service calling centers where they don’t understand English and maintain, ‘Iks-cuuse me Sirrr, we seem to half a bad koneckshun’ even when I called from a physical landline. My damn rebate took 4 months; it wasn’t about the $$, it just became more and more incensing as an American Consumer.

Don’t worry, though, I will pre-order the ThunderBolt¡₣ because the one thing more annoying than Apple is this CRAPPPYYYYY Droid X! And, I miss my EVOOOO …..

    • sBj

@Dman2123 by ” ‘dumb’ ” I assume you mean people that bought the hardware, yet know the proper usage of buy VS by…

      • Anonymous

How dare you insult a fellow Goofan (aka Apple Hater!) We, because of our intellectual prowess, are allowed to transpose or reuse words as we see fit! Dman2123 did this ON PURPOSE!

    • Anonymous

Again, the average IQ of people like you and I (Goofans aka Apple Haters) is 190. Whereas the average Apple iDiot is below 100. So you are right Dman2123!

I guess that either they don’t know there will be a new iphone in the summer or they have waited so long they just don’t care anymore lol. I saw a couple of news stories on TV about the Verizon launch and even the news casters said it may be better to wait for the new model.

    • Chut Pata

The second guess was correct. I myself got up early to place the order. Unfortunately the online order failed to give me my usual 20% discount, and it also failed to give me $100 NE2 discount. That pissed me off.

I also know lot many Verizon loyalists who heard the Verizon iPhone rumors for so long that they felt their intelligence insulted, and shifted towards AT&T just days before iPhone launch. If they had stayed, they would have jumped iPhone.

    • http://mjb12.livejournal.com/ Matt

I’ve waited far too long for a Verizon iPhone, that there was no possible way I could wait until summer to see if a rumor turns out to be true. There’s been rumors of a Verizon iPhone for years and it’s just now coming true, so I’m not going to believe anyone who says another iPhone model will be offered for Verizon anytime soon.

  • Max

Meanwhile blackberry morons claim rim sold 13 millions Torch in the fourth quarter alone. No, morons. That was total sales, not just one model. Morons. Go bbm your last friend using his 8703e.

    • apachuka

just google: My torch has a wobble. See the search results. The phone is a poorly constructed piece, probably thrown together in a haste by RIM , seeing their costumer base evaporate by the minute, when the iphone 4 and the droid models were released last summer. Most slider phones for 50 bucks have a higher quality feel than the torch.

I am typing this from my Verizon iPhone. hehe

      I’m typing this from this
      CRAPPPYYYYY DROID X;
      can’t wait for ThunderBolt¡₣.

      But, congrats on your iPhone.
Can people really ‘hear you now’?

  • Anonymous

Never underestimate the buying power of the uninformed.

*No offense to the very select few who really really needed a new smartphone on Verizon and couldn’t wait till summer. May your resale value be high.

    • Anonymous

maybe the general public isnt thinking about the new iphone to come this summer but its enough people who are members of this site that still wanted this iphone 4 that very well know that a new would could drop in the summer. i could see if it was like may when it launched but we are talking about almost 6 months to wait to possibly even see if the 5 launches with the att version this summer.

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately for us Goofans (aka Apple Haters) the resale value of an iPhone is ALWAYS high! I believe I have heard from Apple iDiots that they make money on their phones when they sell them on eBay. I guess iDiots are not limited to this country. Again, that’s why Goofans (aka Apple Haters) are the smartest people alive!

  • Monique

Should be getting my iPhone today. Can’t wait. Who cares if another one will come in the summer. People still buy Android phones even though a new/better model comes out every week. At least u know that with the iPhone you will get the same update as the new one. Besides an lte version won’t be available until next year and by that time I will be able to upgrade at 20 mos and lte will be more prevalent and well tested by the android army.

  • Stfalcon

    who cares?

  • keymaker

There’s a bunch of my friends who didn’t want another Droid and didn’t want to go to AT&T just for the iPhone and they’re all getting the iPhones. Android is not bad but there’s a lot of issues like getting software updates and most of the good developers don’t even want to go there with the fragmentation issues and all. It’s not easy developing for 6 or more screen resolution, dozen different CPUs, Memory and on top of all that OEMs want to laid out proprietary UIs.

    • Anonymous

Explain fragmentation issues… The apps I bought with my G1 are still good and working with my Nexus S today… Whats the problem???
Not to mention that 98% of the population is on 2.1+ now… Again… Whats the problem?
Or are you drinking from the fragmentation Kool-Aid?

      • Steve Hillshire

Hey cut keymaker some slack. He’s just reciting SJ’s sermon from this weekend. He was instructed to go and spread the fud (I mean faith), that’s all.

  • Anonymous

All I have to say is… We shall see when the smartphone numbers come out for Q1 and Q2 of this year… LOL

But wait… iPhone 5 will be coming out this summer… Yeah, THAT will change everything… Again…

Lets guess now… Same 3.5″ screen? Same 5MP camera? Same, crappy software? No flash for web? What else will iPhone 5 have… Maybe a Retina+ display with a gazillion pixels density??

    • Anonymous

If that much. Advanced teams from the Goofan (aka Apple Hater) nation intelligence apparatus have already determined that Apple WILL INDEED be going backwards. I believe it will have a 2″ screen, a VGA camera, version one of iPhone OS (no iOS anymore), it WILL flash you though, if desired and a 100*20 pixel display. Oh, and I forgot 256MB storage.

Darn you Apple, darn you to HELL!

      • Phed_Up

        I say again…

        @GoofanAKAAppleHater

        Would you SHUT UP!

        yeesh!

    • Steve Hillshire

This has to be really incremental. I heard that NFC was coming to the iPhone 5 so there you have your magical upgrade. LTE for the magical iPhone 6. By the time they get to the iPhone 7 in 2013, they’ll be just passing up the Android devices released in mid-summer 2011.

  • Tedkord

You could apply all the same arguments for iPhone versus Android to PC versus Mac 15 years ago. How did that turn out? Windows dominated the home computer market, PC’s outpaced Mac’s in development and speed (to the point that Mac’s went X86 because they were getting creamed so badly using their own architecture). Open will always win over closed, even if closed makes a better product. Consumers don’t want to be told what they can do with the device for which they paid their hard earned cash.

    • Bringit

More does not always equal better. See: McDonalds.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brett-Munson/1345178887 Brett Munson

So what iPhone 4 on AT&T sold 1.7 million in the first three days

    • chado

To new and current customers. This was 500k for ONLY current customers , In 17hrs at that. Pretty dang impressive. Ill bet that the first 48 hours of the main launch will surpass 1.2 million.

  • Marco

Congrats to the 500,000 people that own a dated phone… the new iPhone 5 comes out in June… LMAO!

    • BillyG

Hey douchebag, there are some people that don’t care to buy every new phone once or twice a year. Just like cars, they are perfectly happy to drive one that is 10 years old and works fine. Of couse these people are normal, socially adjusted people with jobs and boyfriends or girlfriends, so I doubt you’d know anything about it.

  • http://twitter.com/asadrafi Asad Rafi

I think all those 500,000 people are idiot (sorry if it hurts). The next generation iPhone 5 is about to come out, probably in 3-4 months. And I am sure it will hit Verizon, then can’t you people wait for the iPhone 5? And then all people who bought the Verizon iPhone 4 will cry

    • Phed_Up

      @ Asad Rafi

On the iDiot thing, I agree….

…but the truth is, those same iDiots will go buy the iPhone 5 when it gets released! Verizon/Apple will give them some token BD trade-in $ and a “discount” and they will stand in line in droves with their 5 month old iPhone 4 that they just doled out ~$400 to get….and pay another ~$400 for the 5! And all those that don’t do it, would answer a survey saying they would if they could actually sell a kidney!

That is what makes me sad, they are so RDF’d by Apple/SJ that they don’t see the fact that they are getting lead around by the nose!

Pretty despicable across the board if you ask me…

      Just sayin’

  • Anonymous

While you all buy iPhones and IPads I am making 500% in Apple stock. That with options says I made over 5Million over your disputes. BUY, BUY, BUY! APPLE! APPLE! APPLE will go to 700 and beyond.
