Motorola ATRIX 4G on sale March 6th, pre-sales February 13th; $199.99 [updated]

Breaking

According to The Wall Street Journal, AT&T will be releasing its flagship Android device — the Motorola ATRIX 4G — on March 6th, with pre-orders beginning on February 13th. The company directly cites AT&T as the source of its information and goes on to note that the device will retail for $199.99 on-contract (just north of the $149.99 we had hoped for). The report also states that Ma’ Bell will be bundling the handset with that snazzy laptop-dock for $499.99; the laptop will sell for $499.99 if purchased separately. There you have it. AT&T’s first, legitimate flagship Android device. Now… who’s buying one?

UPDATE: AT&T has made the pricing official; the full press release is after the jump.

Thanks, Scott!

4G Portfolio
AT&T is the leader in smartphones, and expects to widen that lead in 2011. In January, AT&T committed to an industry-leading Android portfolio in the U.S. in 2011 and said it plans to offer two 4G smartphones in the first quarter. An industry first, the Motorola ATRIX 4G is the leading edge of more than 20 advanced, 4G devices AT&T plans to deliver in 2011. AT&T has completed the deployment of HSPA+ to virtually 100 percent of its mobile broadband network, which enables 4G speeds when combined with enhanced backhaul.

Motorola ATRIXâ„¢ 4G
The Motorola ATRIXâ„¢ 4G Android 2.2 smartphone will be offered exclusively by AT&T and is the world’s most powerful smartphone. Featuring a 2×1 GHz dual-core processor for a total of 2 GHz of processing power, a unique webtop application, the world’s first qHD display, and Adobe flash player, the, ATRIX 4G delivers a remarkable combination of application processing power with 4G speed capability and a high-resolution qHD display, a first for the industry.

It will be complemented by breakthrough accessories that include a revolutionary, super-thin Motorola Laptop Dock — for which ATRIX 4G is the “engine” — and the Motorola HD Multimedia Dock that uses ATRIX 4G’s HDMI video output capabilities and processing power to enable a revolutionary browsing, application and media experience.

AT&T will offer two special packages for customers who choose to purchase ATRIX 4G in addition to these unique accessories. The first combines ATRIX 4G and the Motorola Laptop Dock for a promotional price of $499.99 after a two-year service contract and $100 mail-in-rebate after subscription to Data Pro smartphone data plan and tethering add on. Customers who choose to purchase the Motorola Laptop Dock separately pay $499.99. AT&T is also offering an Entertainment Access Kit for ATRIX customers which includes the Motorola HD Multimedia Dock, a Bluetooth® keyboard and mouse, and a remote control for $189.99.

Motorola ATRIX 4G will also include AT&T Mobile Hotspot service built into the smartphone, allowing users to connect additional Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

AT&T U-verse® TV customers will be able to manage their DVR recordings – and U-verse customers with a qualifying TV plan can download and watch hit TV shows – right from their ATRIX 4G handset using the U-verse Mobile application. In addition, any ATRIX 4G user, whether or not they have U-verse TV at home, can still enjoy a variety of video options – including live TV – with the new U-verse Live TV application, preloaded and available for $9.99 a month.

499 wow u can buy nice notebook for that

  • Mr Tecjunke

No way, I’ll believe that price once I actually see it on paper…wsj is full of sh** sometimes but seriously anyone who pays $500 for a lapdock w/ no guts is a straight up sucker!!!!!

  • LTE BABY

This will be garbage on AT&T network…put this baby on a real 4G LTE network then you have whats called the “BIONIC”

  • Edaddy

there is an official press release over on Engadget. Personally I have no need for the lap top dock. I would like the multimedia dock but not sure $190.00 on top of the $200 is a good price (NOT!). The HTC Inspire for $99 is looking pretty good. ATT in my area is fine, no issues with service.

    • Anonymous

My assumption was that you could buy the multimedia dock more cheaply without the bundle – maybe $70 or something. This, to me, is still a fairly appealing option, especially for TV usage.

I’m still annoyed about the laptop dock being absurdly overpriced, but I can live without that, at the end of the day. There’s always the chance I can buy it cheaper later on.

$500 gives me a reason to wait for iPhone5 specs. I was thinking buckfitty for the phone and buckfitty for the dock.

Heck, the price will have dropped by the time the next iPhone comes out for a true showcase showdown.

$500 seems like non subsidized pricing to me.

      3. Laptop Dock – Firefox browser use with AT&T Mobile Broadband requires Tethering Plan

Yeah, I’m not getting the dock if I have to pay for a tethering plan on top of it!

      • Anonymous

I totally missed that. Seems dangerously close to violating net neutrality, in that you must pay more to use certain data applications.

      • VERY disappointed

So basically they want what…$50 for the right to use the laptop dock on their 3g network and you only get 2gb? I am not going to be buying this one now…and suspect alot of people will have sticker shock when the representative tells them their expected monthly bill…then they go over the allotment and really get nailed..wow.

      • Anonymous

You get 4GB now. It’s 45 for 4GB with tethering, starting on Feb. 13th.

  • Mark

Anyone know if this will have a locked down market place like previous at&t android phones?

  • Mr Tecjunke

Okay, now I’ve seen it on paper &…….wtf at&t,you guys drop the ball every freakn time…you could have really made your mark w/ the atrix…bailing for the htc thunderbolt

  • Jr

Cool. Only one relevant question….when’s it come to VZW?

  • http://twitter.com/zizo79 zizo

    In 4 1 !!!!! Goodbye iPhone 4 …

  • smartphonefreak

So, we gotta pay $300 extra for the laptop dock, plus $20 extra a month for tethering. Wow. The tethering requirement is definitely a deal breaker for me. If the phone is still the guts of the laptop, why do I have to pay extra? Total Fail Att&t.

  • ilovefeet

    locked boot loader = fail

  • Matt

Locked bootloader with Motoblur. You can be sure that updates will come nice and slow if ever.

    • ilovefeet

      fo-sho

    • Patchy the Pirate

Yeah, just ask the cliq xt owners who today found out that their phones have been forever abandoned on android 1.5 because motorola cannot figure out how to make blur play nice with later versions of android. After a year of promises for an upgrade to 2.1 they are forever stuck on 1.5 Oh well, but hey! you have motoblur, hurray, what a consolation prize!

  • JD

Nice phone. I was actually planning to get one. No way I’ll buy it now. 499 for the laptop dock is just plain stupid. If I wanted to spend 500 I’d just buy a laptop. I see the sales rate for the laptop dock dropping fast. Nice idea Motorola, bad pricing.

1 comment ~ does it have Bing..lol At&t is known for spoiling a good google experience..lol

  • http://twitter.com/JonWorrel Jon Worrel

I have read countless stories about the Motorola Laptop Dock (“dumbdock”) and its various price points depending on AT&T contract arrangements. However, not a single journalist has inquired about the display size and pixel resolution of this $500 dollar accessory.

Regardless of this $500 thin-client accessory not having any computational hardware packed inside, can journalist out there PLEASE ask a Motorola PR representative about these two very important display specifications? Thanks in advance.

    3. Laptop Dock – Firefox browser use with AT&T Mobile Broadband requires Tethering Plan

    Deal breaker.

  • aclsmb

Anyone notice there is no ATT branding on the device like the iPhone. I like that. It’d be cool if Motorola actually continued to create new versions of this model like how Apple does with the iphone vs cranking out completely different models. I think that will create a little more sense of an iconic flagship device to people.

  • Hackman911

I will be upgrading 4 of phones to the atrix and selling my iphones thru there trade in program.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo

  • Anonymous

I’m buying one!! BUT NOT THE EXPENSIVE ASS BATTERY WITH A BLANK SCREEN TOO FUCKING MUCH AT&T/ but will be getting the phone. and keeping my data unlimited :) finally my phone is CLOSING IN

  • androidian

i don’t understand people these days… its motorola. kings of the worst battery life, worst hardware, and worst r&d. sure the specs are just great, but with what penalty? i don’t want a phone with 2 processors and 5 min. of talk time/ 1/2 a day of standby time. flagship phone on paper, but give me a phone that will last at least a day. their last outing of the milestone will last almost a day, but after 2 months of charging and recharging, i’m lucky to get 5 hours now. i’m already back to my nexus.

  • http://twitter.com/ElectroCar Michael Lemus

399 for a laptop with no guts? Give it 6 months and they will be giving these things away. I blame tech blogs and CES for making them think they can charge insane prices just because everyone went nuts for the atrix at CES. This news is almost as worse as hearing the Xoom might be 799. Such a travesty.

  • srsairbags

gonna see a few user reviews after launch . . then if the water looks warm . . . ill take the plunge . . goodbye 3GS . . hello POWER

  • atrix_expert

    All,
Atrix is now being offered by Radioshack @ $149 no rebate. Also, try to get the HDDock online its $60. Buy a BT keyboard/trackpad $45. Your all set to ROCK this bad boy at home w/ WIFI. It is awesome and you will never regret it. You can also buy $4 DVI to HDMI converter and your monitor at work will work as a screen too!
You do NOT need lapdock and datapro to UNLOCK the webtop.
