Samsung: Galaxy Tab return rate is below 2%

Tablets

Following a string of misguided reports, Samsung on Thursday issued a comment suggesting that recent claims of high Galaxy Tab return rates are wildly misguided. ITG on Monday released the findings of a wonderfully unscientific study that claimed 15% of Galaxy Tab buyers in the U.S. returned the Android tablet following their purchases. The report went on to compare that astronomical figure to a 2% return rate for Apple’s iPad — though ITG only looked at iPad sales from a single third-party vendor: Verizon Wireless. In any event, Samsung today issued a statement on its Samsung Tomorrow blog. “ The return rate of the Galaxy Tab in the US as claimed by an North American market research firm is incorrect,” the company said. “According to Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business the return rate is below 2 percent.” Samsung did not address earlier claims that the Galaxy Tab’s sell-out rate was very poor, though the basis of those claims turned out to be a misquote of a Samsung executive’s statement during the company’s recent earnings call.

If your corporation is spending this much time screwing with sales figures then there is only one thing that can be determined:

Your product is obviously not selling well. If you have time to run damage control about what sales were or weren’t it is pretty obvious that your sales were sub par.

Come on Sammy, just worry about porting an update for once.

every company needs to have those studies for strategy and sales purposes

without information like this their stocks would tank, just ask any publicly traded company, dell, apple, microsoft…

Accountability is a good thing, and Samsung is (hopefully) learning a painful lesson. I’m sure they can design excellent phones and tablets. They just need to come clean when it’s required.

Tech blog readers are some of the smartest people out there, and stuff like this doesn’t fly.

  • Midi45

Nice attempt at damage control. Myself and billions of other didn’t buy one.

Myself and billions of others don’t buy apple products at all, your point?

      • SquelchIgnorance

What is your point? Why did you mention Apple?

      • Anonymous

Okay, insert company/product of you choice, the fact that billions of people don’t eat Big macs doesn’t mean McDonald’s is unsuccessful. Likewise MIDI’s purchasing decisions don’t really mean anything. That’s all. Although more to the point, I doubt many would question the pads commercial success and its a competitor to the galaxy tab, so it’s a little more relevant than burgers, but we’ll use cheezburgerz to keep from hurting your feelings.

What does his comment have to do with Apple? Millions of people didn’t buy this OR an iPad. “You’re jumpy … Like … Prison bitch jumpy” – Guru Pitka

      • Anonymous

My comment was asking his point, it was further clarified two post later, Your post appears to be a desparate attempt to get into a fight with someone regardless of how inept you come out of it. just so you understand I’d be mean for your stereotypical responce anyhow, see squelch’s answer above, but you my freind then get the benifit of being called an ignorant illiterate idiot for your failure to read the answer to your question which was posted 2 days before you read the article, please return to your hole in the ground.

      • numetheus

Wow. You are extremely defensive. All I asked was … What does his comment have to do with Apple? Because he said absolutely nothing about it. You just made a horrible assumption. The prison bitch comment is a humorous quote from a movie. That is what the quotes are for. And the hyphen followed by a name the comes after quoted text is usually something that tells you who said the quote. So, how was I picking a fight? I asked a question about how you got to your assumption. You are the one making assumptions and picking fights here.

One of the problems with having this many tech blogs all fighting over readers is that no one takes the time to check the story before posting it. Once a headline is created, every single tech blog or news outlet on the web has to copy the headline and rearrange the words of the original article to make it appear as if they’ve actually done the homework themselves.
So… how well did the Galaxy Tab sell? Were the sales “smooth” or “small”? Were 16% returned, or were there less than 2%? That’s kind of a big difference, don’t you think?

And the worst part is that many of these blogs will probably blame Samsung for this.

Samsung really needs to be addressing their paltry $10 per device operating profit, a Nokia-like figure.

When will the FUD end? I don’t know who or what to believe any more. Analysts, surveys, press releases, arguments, counter arguments and we still don’t know WTF is going on.

Still, all this is great fanboy or troll fodder. :p

Then why does every BestBuy have more open box than factory fresh? I call shenanigans on this one

    • serpentor

o cool, how’d u get a full time job going to every BB checking on their open box supply?

      • mike

i work at bestbuy, it doesnt take much effort to see what other stores have in stock and whats open box. save the sarcasm you look like a fool

  • al bundles

    I call BS!

Just like the 2 million tabs sold wasn’t the real number, it was just the amount of tabs sent to retailers… 2% is probably the amount of tabs that retailers sent back to Samsung… I think 15% is the right number of customers that returned their tabs to the retailers… I know I did, and I know 2 other people that did also.

    • len

Why did you return it? I played with one in the T-Mobile store and it seemed better than my iPad. Would have gotten one I were willing to pay twice for data.

      • al bundles

Exactly. pay twice for data? Didn’t make sense… It’s a nice toy, but just that, a nice toy. My 4.3″ android phone does the same and more than the tab…

  • Anonymous

Heh, 2% of those sold, or shipped?

  • Guest

Samsung has what you might call a proven record when it comes to telling the truth. They make a lot of products with really tempting specs, but there’s no way I’d buy anything from them.

  • Anonymous

it was probably a FANBOY who did the initial report, shame on you apple, but apple known to always play dirty, no surprise there.
