Motorola cans CLIQ XT’s Android 2.1 update; CLIQ XT

mobile

If you’re the owner of a Motorola CLIQ XT from T-Mobile, you’re not going to like this news. Via its user forums, Motorola has announced that plans to update the device to Android 2.1 have been cancelled; leaving the handset and its users stuck on Android 1.5. As the post reads: “After  comprehensive testing of the Android 2.1 upgrade for the CLIQ  XT, we  have concluded that this device will remain on Android 1.5. We  realize  many of you were anxiously awaiting this upgrade, but we aim to deliver software upgrades only when it will provide a better customer experience.” Ouch. That stings. It seems like you have to have a crystal ball when you buy an Android smartphone these days… will it get upgraded, or will it be allowed to wither on the vine? Hit the read link to see the grim news for yourself.

Buy an iPhone instead of an iPhone wannabe and you wont have this problem.

Unless you have the original iPhone and want the full iOS experience. Or the second gen iPhone. Or the iPhone 3g. Wait…

      • Helvetica

Yes, but the iPhone and iPhone 3G came out in 2007 and 2008 … the Motorola CLIQ XT came out less than a year ago (March 2010) and cannot even be upgrade to 2.1, which came out several months before the CLIQ (Jan 12 2010) and isn’t even the most recent OS release.

The cliq XT can and has been upgraded to 2.1. It’s called ROOTING the phone.

Full iOS experience. That will be 10-12 years at the rate Apple moves.

Yeah but why would I want to be stuck with poor hardware specs and a lackluster OS?

cannot blame you. Same reason i don’t want an iPhone.

Either you’re a troll or you saw that i was talking about the iphone. Either way I agree.

    Bad Moto breaking promises

If they would stop with the unnecessarily complex user interface overlays then this kind of thing would not be a problem.

    • Anonymous

Exactly! Not only does it take longer for them to roll out an update, but the skin usually takes away from the user experience more than it contributes.

Oh and nice pic, 330xi is how I roll.

But, but you can just root it and install a custom rom!

Every time i try to read the name of the phone, the vagina comes in to my mind. Go try it, read it: CLIQ XT

    • Taharial

You know I just don’t see it. I like vagina. I look at cliq xt and see “bankrupt failure company”

Or if you’re smart, you wouldn’t buy something that looks like a child’s play thing.

its weird, because a new version of android would bring the damn thing to life, android 2.3 is lighter and faster than android 1.0 was. even though it has more features.
How is it that the indie devs at cyanogenmod can crank out a stable release for more than a dozen devices (within a month), while a company that spends a billion dollars per year on R&D can’t make a newer, objectively better OS version into a good experience on their own device?

    • Taharial

Why you ask? Because they insist on integrating that damn BLUR into android and cannot figure out how to make it work with 2.1 on this phone. Devs at modmymobile can de blur 2.1 and make it work on this phone, even figure out how to get the speakerphone problem fixed. But moto will never ever release a vanillia android rom for this phone and this it is abandoned because of that blur crap.

I’m not surprised, this Droid X is crap in my book.

who cares that phone is a POS anyways, it’s old and outdated.

  • Booboolala2000

That’s what happens when you buy cheap. Meanwhile, rumor is Droid X getting 2.3 update in a matter of weeks, thanks to pressure from the Iphone. Sorry Cliq owners. Motorola barely takes care of it’s $600 phones.

If they didn’t integrate blur so deeply into android, they would not have these problems. The original cliq got a 2.1.update (albeit about 1 year after 2.1 came out) but the blur notification and happenings made the thing lag so bad it was unusable until you disabled them. And now, moto cannot figure out how to make blur play nice on the cliq xt which was a newer phone than the original cliq. And that is why I no longer but phones with manufacturer UI. No more blur

Nice editorial. Guess what? That’s the price you pay for having an Android phone. Nobody I know keeps their phone for more than a year anyway, so unless you’re getting the cheapest one available, it’s only “outdated” for a few months at the most.
