HTC Pyramid: dual-core, 1.2GHz handset headed to T-Mobile?

General

The existence of this next handset is very much a rumor, but it’s a rumor that is almost too good to ignore. Blog AndroidandMe, quoting a “regular source who has provided accurate information about several Android announcements in the past,” is reporting that HTC’s first dual-core, Android handset will be a T-Mobile offering by the name of the HTC Pyramid. Aside from a 1.2GHz, dual-core, Snapdragon processor (MSM8260), the handset will also boast a 4.3-inch qHD display and should be available sometime in May. We’re going to do some digging of our own and see if we can confirm this tasty little rumor with our own sources. We’ll be sure to report back with what we find.

    Qwerty keyboard?

    • Anonymous

If it has a 4.3″ screen i can almost guarantee u it wont have a QWERTY keyboard…they think everyone has tiny hands and can only handle a keyboard on a sub 4″ screen….if u want a keyboard u will have to sacrifice on screen size…it pains me too, but i like a larger screen so i gave up on the keyboard.

So this will be the first “gotta have” Android phone on TMO in how many years? Its funny because thats where Android got its start….u would think they’s almost monopolize the “big deal” Android phones.

Oh man… this is sucks for T-Mo, They get to be the Guinea Pig for this device… and you know what that means: A fast phone that can’t operate for more than 3 hour per charge (or something like that).

Does HTC just have some computer program that makes up new ridiculous names to repackaged identical phones?

My Android device becomes very laggy and the UI gets clunky quite fast so recently I did some investigation.

It turns out that Android still has no GPU accelerated UI (unlike iOS, Symbian, Maemo/MeeGo etc.). It was promised in Gingerbread but it still has not arrived.

The reason for the Dual Core push is so that one core handles UI and browsing. It’s really an inefficient, power hungry and battery draining OS. You can only stretch a VM so far.

Software rendering with a CPU is like mowing your lawn with a pair of gas-powered scissors, one leaf of grass at a time. Sure, faster scissors will improve performance, but the experience will still suck. A lot. Hardware accelerated rendering is like firing up the lawn mower, which can cut entire swaths of grass with a single sweep of the blade. You don’t need to be an engineer to envision which approach will take less gas overall. GPUs are inherently more efficient at rendering, and you want to use them over the CPU whenever possible. The benefits in heat generation and battery life are significant, and compound. Every developer knows this. You just don’t use the CPU for important rendering when you can access the GPU. The GPU will always be more efficient.

Issue 6914: Make android use the GPU (if available) for UI and browsing

When it comes to Android devices, the CPU does the majority of the work since theirs no GPU acceleration. As of now of course.

Best news regarding Egypt all year…

  • Sean76

What a waste to give it to T-Mobile! And HTC are fools for not putting such a screen in the upcoming Thunderbolt. Keep your power Hungry Duel cores, and wimpy batteries, and give me an Awesome screen. Some companies just don’t get it…

Bitter, eh? You Verioznites can go play with your iPhone 4. Stop whining!

I’ll take my Pyramid, thank you!

    • Randyr

Wow Sean you sound like a jealous girl friend. Quit your damn crying you keep your thunderbolt and when this comes out lets see who’s phone is wimpy!

    • Petey

Finally a good phone that some or most tmobile folks are waiting for including myself.

  • Chut Pata

When do we as cosumers stop waiting for the one special phone? By May, the year will be half over. I am still waiting on verizon’s Thunderbolt or Bionic, AT&T’s Inspire. Why can’t we just get a phone now.

  • Benjamin

Yes tmobile is going to be the power house this year most tablets, dual core phones, and fast 4G. Ill wait for the optimus

Dual Core Cortex A8. If that is true, then it’s a BIG FAIL for a flagship.

  • Eestubbs104

With all these dual core handset, I am wondering who is going to actually release their first. I am a Verizon subscriber, but there are some mighty fine phone come out from some other providers. I am currently on a month to month contract just waiting to see who will be getting my next two year contract– will it be Verizon Bionic– or AT&T ATRIX- or Verizon Thunderbolt– or even AT&T Inspire.
