Display panel for Apple’s iPad 2 acquired; lighter, thinner, smaller border?

Tablets

The gang over at 9to5Mac have acquired, what they are reporting to be, a display panel for Apple’s next generation iPad — oft referred to as the iPad 2. The panel is over 1mm thinner than the one used in the current iPad, “lighter,” and has a smaller border-footprint. More evidence that this panel could be authentic: the serial number of the new display (P097X02-SLN1) begins with the same eight characters as the current iPad display (LP097X02-SLA3). The blog notes that it obtained the display from iFixYouri — an iPhone 4 repair service — and that it is unable to identify whether this is a “Retina” display or not. Although, using the serial number, a commenter on the post surmised that the panel is a LG Phillips 9.7-inch XGA 1024 x 768 H-IPS display (we have no way of independently verifying this). What do you think? Would Apple release its next iPad without the infamous Retina display?

no way ! really hoping it’s retinized!

    i don’t, i like the big bars while watching videos, it’s magical…

Although I would prefer a PlayBook, if this thing doesn’t have Retina, I see a lot of people choosing the Xoom over this.. the Xoom looks pretty impressive so far from the videos I have seen. Honeycomb seems far more intuitive than iOS

499 vs 799 is not comparable. People who buy an ipad cant afford a xoom for the most part

I’m pretty sure that those who are buying an iPad, can afford the extra $ to buy a Xoom. Chances are Motorola will capitalize on early adopters, and then drop the price once the sales begin to slow down.

“Motorola will capitalize on early adopters, and then drop the price once the sales begin to slow down.”

I’m pretty sure Motorola will be charging $799 or whatever because they have to. That hardware ain’t cheap. And they don’t have the supply connections like Apple does.

Apple can place an order for 20 million components every 3 months. Volume discounts FTW

        @Michael Scrip

If moto sells each xoom with a subscription, they can afford to sell it cheap upfront. Do you know how much a smartphone costs at full retail?

you should be kidding right? Motorola competing with Apple is a joke as they already have a very bad reputation and people won’t even like to view their products from a 10′ distance, even if they price their Xoom $399 they won’t be to sell 25% of the IPad’s sold.

You won’t know that till you try it. Plus, the honeycomb appeared to be busy and more like windows. Plus, android has less content for tablets. Plus, we have not seen the iPad 2 yet.

We don’t have to know what iPad 2 looks like. It’s a 10″ glass on one side and aluminum on the other. There’s only so much industrial design you can do.

But we do know what iOS will look like on an iPad 2 – same old, same old. honeycomb is totally new, and the UX was designed by Matias Duarte. He is the Steve Jobs of UX.

Too early to say Matias is Steve Jobs of Ux. Apple created basic tablet and is incrementally making it more mature. iPhone 4 has retina. The display part is not necessary already come as pixel doubled. Apple does something to the display to give that retina finished. so, the jury is still out. Matias is great, but not amazing. Portion we have seen so far is meh! iPad has a huge start like Xbox 360 did over ps3. Honeycomb is not totally new. It is similar to palm pre and windows as far as how it looked. There are some iOS elements in there, too.

Actually, yoda, Apple didn’t “create” the tablet as they would have you believe. Like they do with most of their products, they “reinvent” it. There were already tablets before the iPad and smartphones before the iPhone. Apple revolutionized these devices. The iPad essentially created a “market” for said devices. I’m no Apple fan, but that’s pretty much how it went down. Now, Android has surged forward and essentially created an OS that outperforms iOS and will soon dominate the tablet market. It’s already now #1 worldwide as a mobile platform for phones, recently surpassing the previously reigning king named Symbian. This will soon happen with tablets. In fact, recent numbers already show this: iPad went from over 90% market dominance to now just over 70% due to Android tablet sales (mostly, Samsung Galaxy Tab).

    You spelled Philips wrong.

Not sure how Apple double the pixels on any display. Just knowing the part number does not tells us whether the display will be retina or not. If we know how apple does it, then we would know and also be rich. The fact it is the same resolution only tells us that it will be the same or better. So, this doesn’t really prove that it will be the same resolution or not. Jury is still out. Although, it looks like the iPhone 4 when it is turned off.

This supposed iPad 2 is only 131 ppi… a far cry from the 329 ppi retina display of iphone 4, and I think not even as good as the 3GS display.

There is NO WAY Apple will put a “retina display” at silly resolutions to an iPad in 2011.

The modules do not exist. Even if they existed, they’d kill the battery and choke the gpu.

2012 at earliest and even then it’s not very likely.

Wake up people, this is about tech realities not about wet dreams

Cant these losers put them under a microscope and have a look? Jeez, this is the 21st century you know.

  • Kpurdu1
