Verizon tweets: HTC Thunderbolt may be here ‘sooner than expected’

mobile

With the company’s February 3rd pre-order and February 10th release dates for the iPhone getting the lion’s share of media coverage, Verizon took to Twitter to make sure we don’t forget about another high-end smartphone due out in the near future, the HTC Thunderbolt. In 140 characters or less, Verizon quipped:

Many have waited for the Verizon #iPhone. Some looking for the #4G #LTE HTC #Thunderbolt. May be sooner than we expected!

Hopefully, “sooner” comes some time this month, as many have been lusting for this 4.3-inch, LTE device since we first spotted it months and months ago.

I got an email from my local Verizon store manager saying that February 24th was the tentative launch date.

I guess that’s not so bad for me since I am eligible for an upgrade on the 22nd.

Still, were the device to be released on the 14th, would a Verizon store be able to hook me up? Is one week that big a deal?

I don’t understand the appeal of the ThunderBolt when the Bionic will be out in a few months. The only reason I can think to buy one is if you love Sense and/or can’t wait for the Bionic.

Quit playing games and just give us a date.

What are the let data plan rates???

    • Anonymous

They’ll probably tell us at MWC or sooner.

    • Monique

exactly…i’m more interested in the LTE data plans than this phone or any other LTE phones for that matter.

They have to let the tension build in order to get your expectations so high that no matter how sweet the device is, your going to be disappointed.

    Cant wait!

This is going to be my next phone. If and when an LTE IPhone shows up, I may switch, but everything I’ve seen about this phone spec-wise, is droolworthy. And speaking as a devout Mac user at home, I have to say that I am a big fan of Android. My original Drois is the first phone Ive had in years that Ive kept for over a year. There are a few apps I would like to have that arent available on Android (yet) but thats not enough to get me to switch.

What’s so great about this phone? The Bionic is better

      • Anonymous

Overall the Bionic is worse. You get a Tegra 2 and an HDMI-out port, but you lose out on everything else (guaranteed unlocked bootloader, HTC Sense, HTC’s speed of updates, better back speakers, kickstand, DLNA streaming, 256 MB RAM, 32 GB mini-SDHC – overall +24GB of storage).

HDMI-out isn’t that big a deal for most people, and a majority of the OS modules and various apps won’t be optimized for dual-core processors until later in the year/early next year. By then, a one-year contract on your T-Bolt will be up and you can instead upgrade to a second-gen Tegra 2 or a new Tegra 3 device and tell the Bionic to eat it.

256M RAM? I though it was more like 768MB. Unless I am misreading your post.

      • DBEvans

        @BrianWM:

He’s saying the T-bolt has 256MB more than Bionic. Overall, T-bolt has 768MB RAM.

      • tomiwah

I’ll take the Bionic’s 512 MB of DDR2 RAM over the HTC’s 768 any day. Both great phones, but the RAM is not apples to apples.

      • Anonymous

        @tomiwah

Definitely the T-Bolt still has “only” DDR RAM, but the difference won’t be as huge as the specs signify.

As it is now, the Thunderbolt is definitely 2010 technology, but the OS isn’t going to be able to support 2011 advances until late this/early next year. Future-proofing your device is definitely recommended if a two-year contract is your only option, but if you have money to burn then it seems best if you get a T-Bolt now and get rid of it when the second-gen dual-core and DDR2 devices come out because only by then will the software have caught up to allow for these specs to decimate the T-Bolt in performance.

      • Tim242

Really? Only screen resolution is better, and not by a lot. Froyo nor Gingerbread support dual cores.

  • whooo

boring…when will htc do somehting new…

    • Midi45

      No. They don’t do that.

  • Dd

The phone is showcased in the Sunday Best Buy ad next week for a $50 pre-order

  • Chut Pata

    Questions:
    1. Does it have a front facing camera?
    2. Does it have a 1080p resolution?
    3. Does it have an HDMI output?
    4. Is it a 4G phone?
    5. Does it have the technology for electronic payments?
    6. Does it have Infra Red to work as a remote?
    7. Does it have a dual core processor?

If it has just one thing missing, I will wait for the next phone.

    • Steel

      It’s missing #3 and #7 for sure. Bionic isn’t.

      • Chut Pata

The word is that it is missing #2 as well, which Bionic has. If rumors are true, I guess I will wait for Bionic.

      1. Yes
      2. No
      3. No
      4. LTE
      5. ?
      6. No
      7. No

      Lot of no’s…lol…

      Just another HTC POS

      • http://twitter.com/madbadvlad Vladimir Valette

this, ladies and gentlemen, is what one would call an educated synapsis. “just another htc pos”, indeed.

        /sarcasm

    • Tim242

Your list is BS, as I already pointed out for you. I lol @ remote and electronic payments. I see you slimmed your list down after being stupid and saying it doesn’t have froyo. Dual core is a joke. Froyo nor Gingerbread support it.

    • http://twitter.com/madbadvlad Vladimir Valette

no one does #5 yet. nfc is a while away from becoming commonplace so it’s pretty pointless to make that a selling point.

  • Sean76

Very annoying! Seriously, nobody really cares about the vzw iPhone! I’ll put money on it if the iPhone sales aren’t good, they will postpone the Thunderbolt until around the Middle of March, which is the reason why we have not heard anything about a release date. An LTE iPhone would have been huge, but the same ol 3G version that has been available on at&t since June? Not a big deal, give us some sweet 4G Android already.

  • Your Mom

Yeah..sooner than expected…..IT’S CALLED THE EVO! Ha ha!! It’s like a replica but with mor einternal memory, way to go Verizon!!

    • Tim242

Better build quality, aluminum unibody. Better screen, Super LCD. More RAM,768 MB vs 512. More Internal memory, 8 GB.32 GB SD. Lte, which is far superior to wimax. Oh, and new gen processor.

  • DroidGeneral2011

I just talked to very reliable source that told me that told me that on the 14th they should have them in at there corp. store. Also for all you people that think its the same as the Evo…Its not…It has the higher bench mark ratings than the “EVO” atrix, bionic, and the new samsung 4g lte. Throw in SENSE 2.0 and the evo completely outdated. Also who need’s hdmi output when you have DLNA technology. Verizon will soon have the best and most current 4G phones running on the most powerful network. In China last week they achieved 600mbs on there LTE test. Who really need WIMAXX or HSPALTE…

  • Anonymous

I hope Verizon is not screwing up their launching of two very important devices for their 2011 portfolio. It would be a shame if they blow their load so to speak on product launches before June and have nothing new to offer to combat all the other carriers new devices launches for the 4th quarter.
