News Corp announces ‘The Daily’

News Corp’s iPad-only newspaper The Daily is finally official and we couldn’t be happier to put this drawn-out ordeal behind us. News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch was on hand at a press conference on Wednesday to introduce his new pride and joy, and details are as follows: The Daily, as one might assume, will ba a daily paper — available only on the iPad to start — and new issues will be available 365 days each year. The Daily will be interactive, packed full of 360-degree photos and original video content, and some articles will even be read aloud from within the app. There will also be Web-friendly versions of articles to share on Twitter, Facebook and so on. The publication will include crossword puzzles, Sudoku puzzles and customizable content such as weather forecasts and scores from your favorite sports teams. More interesting than The Daily itself is the imminent introduction of Apple’s new App Store subscription option for publishers, which will allow companies to build apps that serve subscription-based content. The new functionality is only available on The Daily for the time being, but Apple VP Eddy Cue said an announcement on availability is forthcoming.

The Daily app will be available in the App Store starting at 12:00PM EST today, and subscriptions will cost $0.99 per week or $39.99 for a one-year subscription. Interested parties will also be happy to learn that the first two weeks of The Daily will be free thanks to a sponsorship agreement with Verizon.

    Not sure what the big deal is. The only new thing is paying for news on your computer. It seems to me that anyone hyping this is really just providing free advertising.

    It should be “and subscriptions will cost $0.99 per *Day/Week* (Whichever it is )or $39.99 for a one-year subscription.”

        it did charge- a few years ago- and it was an absolute fail.So they dropped it.

        the earlier tablet pc’s failed to. my point is, look at the profit margin of the news print media. the reputable news outlets cannot compete with all the garbage out there.

        they’re going to have to do it just like they used to do it with print- in advertising revenue. The problem is their profit margins will drop. But I agree with your basic point. They’re between a rock and a hard place.

    If it’s fully of his far-right screeds, I’ll pass. But if it’s got actual news, commentary from the full political spectrum, etc., then maybe. Not holding my breath – he’s got a certain track record.

    There are a lot of people I know that would like something like this. Not sure they would want to pay for it though. I may take a look at it for the trial but with all the free news apps and sources you really don’t need to pay for it. Should have made it ad supported in my opinion.

    A quick reminder: it’s pushed to you every day. That means it sends you most of the data whether you access it or not. So not only do you have to PAY [one of the richest men in the world] for this ‘newspaper’, but the hundreds of extra MegaBytes it might use for HD video, 360* photos you might not care to see, stories you might not ever read, animations that just drain battery life, and all of the other little extras eat away at the limited/capped data plans that you also PAY for. You have to PAY to use up something you have to PAY for.
    BTW, great news blogs like BoyGeniusReport, NPR, HuffingtonPost, TED, Gizmodo, and so many more are still FREE…

    It’s ironic … I’m old enough to remember the “1984″ ad campaign of Apple- and what they’ve done with proprietary technology in order to drive profit margins along with leveraging their hold on the market in terms of music … Just like Microsoft did … they’re 1984-just in technicolor. Murdoch & Apple. Perfect.

      A traditional newspaper chargers 50 cents to $1 and they still have tons of ads so take it easy. With tablet sales about to explode they were smart to get in on the ground floor with the “daily”. I believe its going to be $.99/week which equates to less a quarter a day. If the news is high quality, I am more than willing to pay $.15-.25 per day for a full featured tablet paper. Go look at how much a years worth of a standard local paper is. More than $40 per year I can tell you that.

      Give it a chance or ACTUALLY READ IT before you say its “DOA” or a “HORRIBLE IDEA”

    I’m wondering how practical this is for a Wi-Fi only iPad. How much of the content and feature list are going to be dependent on a constant connection and how much is going to be dumped in and available “offline”.

    I guess the fact that a wireless company is underwriting a free 2 week subscription may be a clue? LOL
