HTC Thunderbolt release date set for February 24th?

Whisper

We’re hearing rumors that Verizon Wireless store managers have been told to prepare for a February 24th release of HTC’s 4.3-inch, LTE, Thunderbolt handset.  The 24th of February has been a popular, rumored launch-date for the device in the blogosphere over the past few days. Earlier today, the company took to Twitter to taunt the awaiting masses that the device would be here “sooner than expected.” BIONIC or Thunderbolt… that is the question.

PASS on the Thunderbolt and Iphone!!!! I wonder what Sprint has up it’s sleeves… If they can top the EVO it may cause me to leave Verizon…

  • Scott

Whopty doo! I want to know a release date for the Atrix. Thunderbolt isn’t anything special.

    • Tim242

The thunderbolt is special. Lte pwns hspa+.

Not much use without dual core I think. I doubt the single core processor can catch up with the Internet speed when rendering the pages. You will experience faster loading of pages, but you won’t be fully taking advantage of LTE speeds. I wouldn’t be surprised if even dual cores can’t take full advantage of that speed. Mobile chips are still much slower than laptop/PC chips that we normally use for instant browsing.

      • Tim242

That is such a crock. Froyo nor Gingerbread support dual core. Honeycomb is
not coming to phones. The only thing that will be able to somewhat utilize
dual cores, will be the few games made for it. The OS does not supporr it.
You should learn about it and stop speading fud. ThunderBolt scored higher
benchmarks than the Bionoc and the Samsung.

  • Themartinthunder

I want the thunderbolt. No more Droid x for me!

    • http://twitter.com/alktrio06 Gary Yee

Ditto! You going to pay full retail though?!?!?

      • Anonymous

I’m going to one-year it and upgrade to a dual-core, DDR2 device next year. By then the software will have caught up so I can actually reap huge performance gains at that time.

If the rumored $30/month fee for 4G is true, which means it may increase at another time, I will buy all future devices at full retail to avoid losing the cheaper 4G costs if renewing a contract requires me to pay the extra cash.

Any news on whether or not this will in fact be a world phone?

    • Nativi

NO this phone will not be a world Phone

  • Frank

All of you are crazy. When new phones come out all you do is talk about the next one that isn’t out yet and how much better it is. Just get a freaking phone and enjoy it.

    • el712

      Exactly!

  • Jwhi

that phone came out last june, right? atrix or bust!!

I’m picking the Thunderbolt up when it’s released; I like my Droid X, but it’s been acting hella wonky lately, and the screen isn’t as big as the Thunderbolt’s. Still to this day, I get envy when I handle my dad’s Evo.

For the record the Thunderbolt is NOT the same phone as the Evo; just the same screen size.

    • Scott

Wow… you’re an idiot! The EVO, Droid X, Thunderbold all have the SAME screen size of 4.3″ FAIL!

      • Greg

Wow, you don’t know geometry! Diagonally, yes… but area-wise the TB and EVO have (ever so slightly) larger screens. The narrower aspect ratio of the screen on the X means it’s got less area for the same diagonal measurement.

      • Scott

So, you’re going to really care about that tiny little difference? Wow… I bet you have the same break down for vagina’s… that is, if you’ve ever seen one. lol

      • Anonymous

        @Scott

You want a more square, less rectangular screen so as to type easier. The Motorola Droid series screens tend to be very long but thin, making it hard to enjoy the touch keyboard. The Bionic fixes this with a more standard 16:9 resolution. The Thunderbolt is still doing the 800x480px WVGA resolution, meaning the keyboard will be thinner than the Bionic, but at least it beats the crap out of the 854x480px resolutions like on my Droid and the Droid X.

      • Tim242

The ratio is different though. The htc phones have wider screens.

    • xXxCOSMOxXx

are you retarded the droid x is the exact same size as the t-bolt..and fyi the thunder bolt is not the same phone as the evo but has more similar than the screen..get your facts straight its people like you who started the rumors about the realease date an got every body hyped up.

LTE trumps HSPA+ The Atrix is nothing special, the netbook dock is a gimmick at best. The Droid Bionc has the same specs as the Atrix but with LTE

    • Anonymous

LTE will have issues at first, and you will not see its “potential” speeds for quite some time. HSPA+ will be fast, tested, and a great bridge while we wait for LTE to be further implemented and tested. Choosing one over the other for only that reason is your choice, however.

      • Thundercat

LTE’s network is currently getting way better than potential speeds currently because there aren’t too many users on the network. Many LTE cards are are getting 20 on the DL, including mine. Typical speeds of 5-12 will be expected once more users are on the network which is what Verizon stated. HSPA+, ATT “4G”, is not really even 4G but more like 3G+. A bandaid network until ATT has to revamp their entire network to get LTE into place which won’t even happen until beginning of 2012 when Verizon will have their entire EVDO map covered by LTE.

      • Scott

wow, you’re quite the VZW fanboy. LTE isn’t even “4G” either. LTE Advanced, is, however, which will be quite some time away. I’m already seeing 5Mb down on an HSPA 7.2 phone, so I will expect to see slightly higher speeds on HSPA+. So that would put it right in line with VZW LTE. Also, AT&T had said they will have LTE in select cities by mid 2011 and mostly covered by end of 2013. VZW said it will have 2/3 of it’s current network covered by the end of 2011. At least get your facts right

Final score 2.5 out of 9. I think I will wait for Bionic.

    • Scott

Umm dude, this has 2.2 (Froyo).

    • Anonymous

Ummm, dude: the Bionic has a 0.3 FFC (like the main camera on the old LG VX6000 flip phone) and MotoBlursh¡t.

    • Tim242

      1. Yes
      2. No, but still HD. From a phone, it won’t be that good either way.
      3. Has DLNA. That is about as widespread as the number of people with HD tv’s. Only pics and videos taken from the phone work with HDMI.
      4. Yes
      5. Electronic payments? Really? How many retailers are doing this?
      6. Infrared? LMAO really grasping at straws there.
      7. Dual core? FroYo nor Gingerbread support it. Good luck waiting on a phone version of honeycomb, that may not even come to these phones.
      8. FroYo? YES
      9. Yes

Thank you. I’m looking forward to the Thunderbolt; my Droid 2 has been acting suspicious lately and I am more than willing to take it out to the farm (read: Craigslist).

  • http://www.facebook.com/carsongbaker Carson Baker

Thunderbolt has HTC Sense. All other OS’s other than Google’s vanilla OS are worthless. And I know with a Verizon HTC combo I’ll be getting android updates regularly. Thats why Thunderbolt is the way to go over any other Verizon phone.

  • Ilarraza1

Finally VZ with an EVO competitor…YAWN wonder what Sprint will release on 2-7-2011… May EVO 2.0 3D

  • Ilarraza1

Anyway Sprint is like #1 in customer satisfaction and has the cheapest rate plans with unlimited data and no caps…why would I want to go to VZ for a phone that was cool in 2007 and a a phone that was hot back in June??? VZ = FAIL

    • Thundercat

Enjoy the extra 10.00 charge Sprint will be charging you. Thunderbolt beats out the EVO in many categories. LTE, simultaneous voice and data, integrated skype, #1 in voice service in every tested area according to JD Power. Where does Sprint rank?

    • Azreedtech

Where the hell did you read that, a Sprint store? They are always ranked low with customer service! That is why so many people are leaving them for other carriers. Evo is an afterthought now. Cheap plans? Thats just a last act of a desperate carrier! Good luck finding 4G. If you can even call it that!

  • Wmagtibay

This is a good news. Can’t wait any longer. I hope HTC will Apple in dishing out a GSM/UMTS/HSPDA/LTE hand set. It will make sense. If you are a Verizon Customer, use the LTE band and if you are a AT&T customer use the HSPDA band. I am telling you now, Apple will have this type of phone in their next iteration of the Iphone.

  • Anonymous

I hope HTC makes a Nexus phone that uses LTE.

    • Anonymous

I’m expecting Motorola to make the next Nexus, especially since it is long overdue. HTC and Samsung already got their turns. LG is another viable option as well.

  • Anonymous

Perfect timing. I’ll be eligible for a new phone. 1 yr contracts are so worth it.

  • Jbizzie

    February 14th… TRUST ME…

    • Azreedtech

Too close to the Icrap release. It will be at least 15 days after the Icrap is out before they release the T-bolt. That way when all of the Apple sheep realize the Icrap is slow and oudated, they cant all run back to the Verizon store and exchange their phones out to the T-bolt as they will be beyond their 14 day trial…..Trust me…

  • andy

the tweet clearly says HTC Thunderbolt

    • Anonymous

With the last statement they meant “should you get the Thunderbolt or wait for the Bionic…that is the question.” They know what the Tweet said, but the two devices are kind of a toss up. Get the best device of its class in a few weeks, or wait for an early version of next-gen technology for a few months?
