Google launches Web-based Android Market

Software

During a press conference on Wednesday, Google announced and subsequently launched a Web-based version of the Android Market. Providing functionality similar to iTunes where apps are concerned, the new Android Market website will allow users to browse Android software from any computer with a Web browser. Previously, users could only browse the Market on Android phones and tablets. The new Android Market site is live right now and can be reached from the read link below.

Why on earth did they have Lady Killer on and not announce a music store. I love me some Android, but they need to learn how to harness Apple’s flair.

Maybe they planed to, but Google could not get all the licensing deals signed in time.

Anyone else having issues logging in?

    • Snowpocalypse

Seems that lots of people are. I’m more curious if *anyone* is actually able to log IN…

i was able to login since the beginning, but I got bunch of invalid request errors when trying to access content… now should be working fine for everybody.

      Seems to be working now.

  • Eric

    Gee… about time! lol.

  • Edaddy

@Fabrizio- I cannot log in either.

  • Geust

so.. is it just like what RIM has for BlackBerry?

    • QNX Please

Yep. I was just thinking, I’ve been able to do this with Appworld for 2 years now. But BB is still sadly lacking in Apps. Hopefully QNX will fix that.

      • Geust

hopefully QNX will be able to handle android apps :) ))

      • Tim242

So, when you click install on the bb webpage, it remotely installs the app to your phone without having to touch it?

I wish Google would work on integrating the products seamlessly.

i’m a google apps user and so far in the past two days I can’t check in on latitude and I can’t sign into the android market

google products are killer but really need a seamless experience to fully appreciate, use and make google more money

Agreed.. I use and enjoy Google apps enough to probably never not have an Android phone BUT I did buy an iPod Touch a couple of weeks ago and that little thing is pretty slick. I buy apps left and right, it’s very cool and fun. I wish android was making more money for devs so other devs would take notice and make more and better apps. I don’t want or need everything free, I just want the apps to run well and look great plus have a lot more selection. I use the touch for the gym and mess around at home with it on wifi, my EVO is just like strictly just business and navigation right now, I feel bad:-(

      • Snowpocalypse

We have two iPod Touch’s in the house for the kids. They are great devices, but I have no use for them (other than to play with now and then) as my EVO does everything I need. I can’t see where you’re coming from there.

Except anytime I try and download something, it makes me log in, followed by an “invalid request” page

    -sigh- Come on!

I’ll be honest, I whined about wanting a Desktop Client for android for quite some time, but this is WAY better! Flipping through apps on my computer and then scanning QR codes when I find the one I like? Yes please.

This type of functionality has been available by using AppBrain and AndroLib for quite a while… What Google’s releasing isn’t really anything new?

      • Anonymous

Well then, excuse my ignorance! Still, I prefer a Google-made portal to their own Market.

      • Tim242

I’m with you there. Plus, this is the only one that installs str8 to the phone, without having to touch it.

      • Tim242

It is quite new, this is the only one that installs str8 to the phone, without having to touch it.

    Invalid login request? FAIL.

Now it makes sense why Google killed the ability to download straight from AppBrain… They wanted to create their own integration… Too bad the site doesn’t work 100% on launch day :s

I can still see myself using AppBrain to see the “Hot Apps” and stuff like that more than using the Android Market. It’s nice to see the estimated number of downloads

    • Fi88er

All issues have been fixed. You can log in now.

  • Badic3

I can login but when I go to download an app it gives me an error while trying to find what phone I have.

  • Jojo

Working great for me. Downloaded Gun Bros and anipets wallpaper and sent it right to my phone over the air!!!

    • Aj

      Seems to be working now

      • Brett

        Working here too. Pretty cool.

  • SideshowDave

I hope it offers more browsing options in the future… which apps are new (aka” just in”), which are hot today (a la AppBrain), and sort by ratings (like just about any retail site these days)…

  • Mikeymiz83

Is it just me or am I not able to find this link anywhere.
