Google dishes details on Android 3.0 Honeycomb

mobile

Today, at a scheduled press conference, Google, Inc. provided the world with additional details about its Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) mobile operating system. From a new notification bar area, to a new graphics engine, along with several new APIs, it is very obvious that Google and its team of engineers have put in a ridiculous amount of time and effort into this tablet optimized version of Android. Andy Rubin and host of others gave demos of a fluid eReader, the music player, a redesigned and intuitive digital camera interface, Google Maps, and a host of other applications. A rebroadcast of the event will be live on Google’s Android YouTube site in the coming hours. In the mean time… we’ll continue to update this post with any new information provided. We’ve also setup a gallery of Android 3.0 screen shots to hold you over. Enjoy!

  • Google is emphasizing the video prowess of Android 3.0. They’ve demoed video chat using GTalk; complete with a botched cameo from “Lady Killer” Cee Lo Green. They’ve also had CNN on stage showing off a new application that features live streaming video from CNN and its affiliates around the globe.
  • Google detailed the Android Market Web Store. This function will allow users to discover and browse the entire catalog of Android applications from their computer’s web browser. Applications can also be pushed directly to a linked device right from the browser. The site’s URL is: market.android.com.
  • Addressing how users purchase applications: Google announced that “buyer currency” support will be coming to Android Market. Developers can enter explicit app prices for supported currencies allowing for region specific pricing.
  • In-app purchases will also be coming to Android Market. The only timetable given was “soon”, but this is a feature that developers have been clamoring for. Currently, in-app purchases are being testing with several developers including Disney Mobile.

Its android users that hate apple, not Google.

You want them to not market to Mac Users too?… Why do people notice the most irrelevant things?

      • whatthewhat

I just said it was funny… I didn’t mention anything about relevance.

Definitely hard to get a grasp of the changes based on pics. Really going to reserve judgement until I get my hands on the G-Slate.

Sure see alot of Apple style preview pages here.
Will be curious how it stacks up in real world use.
Not enamored with all of Apple’s products but I like alot of their innovations.

Something fishy is going on here, Google is capable of doing something better, feels like their withholding something, I’m beginning to suspect a secret agreement between Google and Apple here.

Must say, well one to Google for not taking any jabs at Apple this time. Very mature.

    • Rob

Have fun duck taping your BES enabled BlackBerry to your Playbook to see your corporate Address Book, Email or Calendar.

I’ll just leave it in my pocket. Works for me.

      • BrownGuy

I know, people act like its a huge deal to tether the two together. I wont have my playbook if my phone isnt around in my pocket, on my desk, or my charger. They act like its a huge burdon to carry my Bold. As if iPad users dont have their iphones neatly tucked away in their anuses.

This is precisely why Android will never be taken seriously. First, you have the AndroidOS for the phones. Next, you have the AndroidOS for tablets. Ne’er the twain shall meet? If I’m a developer, do I really want to spend the time writing my app for the phone version of the OS, then port it to the tablet version? However, the OTHER smartphone platform that shares an OS between its phones and tablet device is identical, regardless of the platform. One app can be written to support BOTH the phone AND the tablet.

  • heyhey

here is the sad thing: this version of android is probably very smooth and fast. google proly did a lot of work on this, and i bet that the functionality of this tablet is more than that of any other tablet but android’s problem persists: it is still geeky, ugly, and unimaginative. this version of the os is fresh but it still fails to impress in the coolness dept. the accelerometer and re-orientation of the screen is still not as smooth and cool as that on apple’s mobile os and off course google and apple both have yet to show something as cool and elegant as webos

Will this be available for the Galaxy Tab? Or are we stuck at froyo?
