T-Mobile tweets: Dell Streak 7 launching February 2nd for $199 on-contract

Tablets

We’re going streaking… at T-Mobile… on February 2nd! Hmm, that may have come out wrong. What we’re trying to say is that Dell’s 7-inch tablet, the Streak 7, will be hitting the shelves of T-Mobile in just two days on February 2nd — a date we’ve heard kicked around before. The device will retail for a very reasonable $199.99 with a signed, two-year contract (after a $50 mail-in rebate). For those that need a quick refresher, the Streak 7 was announced at this month’s Consumer Electronics show and will boast a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, HSPA+ radio, front-facing camera, and Android 2.2. A Galaxy Tab or a Streak 7… that is the question.Read

I am looking forward to reading all about it from my iPad…ok, that was an easy one. Seriously though, I hope that Dell has done a better job this time. The hardware usually seems great but they and Samsung seem to have trouble with keeping software up-to-date.

Other than my 5″ streak came with 1.6 (it’s running 2.2 since December), it works PERFECTLY.
I wish Google would take the same approach to updates that Apple did, WE control it, not the carrier.

That’s easy enough to agree with.

$200 tablets will be how Android will take over the tablet marketshare from Apple.

a 2 year contract for a tablet just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. it is not a must have device like a phone and will be obsoleted at the same pace. how many electronic device mortgages do they really expect us to buy?

Tablets on contract are a complete fail. Especially oversized android phones (yet, still undersized for tablets). Aside from extreme android fanboys on tech blogs like Serpentor, who is buying these?

I’ll play with it on day one and wait for the iPad 2 or palm pad

My first impression of a Dell branded electronics is that I have to see it first. It could be great. Or it could be a great joke. But $200 for a dual-core tablet is an insanely good price point. If I were looking for a non-Apple tablet, this would be the first one I’d shop. This is provided that the monthly plans are $10-$20 for a low cost plan. I will be using wifi mostly.

On contract on contract on contract! When are we going to get a decently powered tablet for $300 that I can just use and not sign my life away for?

That’s definitely not a valid question to post. HSPA+, Tegra 2 quicker update to 2.3 …. I think everyone opting for the Tab will be compelled to buy the Streak 7 IMO

But then again those satanist sales rep’s will market the Tab before the Streak to run through their last bit of inventory.

The Tab is not a bad device. I really liked it when it was released. However, it has been seriously overpriced for what it is. Priced higher than the iPad at full retail and then requiring a 24 month contract for barely any worthwhile subsidy?? That will not be something I’ll want to be using two years from now and I won’t pay top dollar when I can buy a better device for less…even if it is Apple.
