Motorola’s Super Bowl ad takes aim at Apple [video]

mobile

Motorola won’t be pulling any punches during the Super Bowl this year as it prepares to run a spot that calls out Apple’s iconic 1984 Macintosh television advertisement. The reborn cell phone maker uploaded its Super Bowl commercial to YouTube today in an effort to generate some buzz — and generate some buzz it will. Motorola’s “Goodbye 1984″ ad references one of the most famous Apple commercials of all time, which compared Microsoft’s stranglehold on the PC market to Orwell’s famous novel, 1984. “2011 looks a lot like 1984,” the commercial contends, suggesting that it’s time for consumers to have choices beyond Apple’s iPad — namely, the upcoming Motorola XOOM. In any event, it’s a smart spot that is sure to make some waves and ruffle some feathers. Hit the jump for the full commercial.

UPDATE: A Motorola rep just reached out to clarify that this spot is a teaser for Motorola’s upcoming Super Bowl ad, not the actual ad, which will premier on Super Bowl Sunday.

The problem with all this Android marketing is that they spend too much time talking about Apple. How about actually showing people what your device does instead of trying to attack the other company. When Jobs is doing a presentation of whatever device they are releasing, he shows what the device does well. He doesn’t spend an hour talking about other devices. Stop telling me why Apple is so bad. Try telling me why your new phone or tablet is so good instead of people having to attempt to figure out what’s going on.

Most general consumers don’t even know that the Samsung Fascinate, Moment, EVO, Droid, Incredible, Eris, Hero, myTouch 4G, LG Optimus are all Android based devices. They think only VZW has “Droids”. They should spend more time educated people about their platform and capabilities and less time trying to take shots at other companies.

what has the world come to when they give you “teasers” for advertisement, do people really ENJOY advertisement??

  • QNX Please

Aint that the truth, but Apple lemmings like being told what they can use and can’t use by their Overlord.

That’s right and Google (my overlord) is ok as long as you are using Android and RIM (your overlord apparently) as long you’re using BB! You are truly a genius and I appreciate you!

Motorola wishes it was 1984 again, but it’s not. Without Google’s Spyware OS, Motorola’s Mobile division would’ve been lucky to make it to 2011.

I have an EVO, but this ad looks too similar to the video that plays after you install Snow Leopard. Looks as if Moto is “stuck in 1984″, too.

Apple makes hardware and software while Moto is just another sheep in googles huge field. If you want total freedom just jailbreak your device, nothing more to it.

As a Goofan (aka Apple Hater) I find it humorous that Motorola is targeting Apple when their primary competition is NOT Apple, it’s HTC and Samsung. Whoever’s going to buy iOS “stuff”, the not very smart, will buy iOS “stuff”. Whereas, whoever’s going to buy Android, the true geniuses in the world, will buy Android. They better make sure FIRST AND FOREMOST that I am buying THEIR phone before picking up a Samsung or HTC phone. Wicked weird!!!!

    Totally lame!

Again, they didn’t show the product. A lot of Hype but no, product. In the end it is the product that matters. I doubt anything Andriod will hold a candle to anything IOS for a while. Heck, Windows 7 tablets are better.

  • Yocobo

What did any of those specs mean? I don’t get it. So Motorola’s phones are old?

Motorola is acting like a 15 year old drama queen.

so is about half the posters on this thread

  • Pattonmartini

    Ohngod that was retarded.

Phew! There’s hope yet. This is a “fan-created” ad…according to the original 9 to 5 Mac source.
    That was hysterically awful.

  • tallperson117

I like what they’re trying to do, but the commercial looks like something made by some crazed 12 year old fanboy, and this is coming from an Android fanboy.

  • Chimpware

Amazing that Tech Marketing still does not get it. Apple is successful because of user experience, not Tech Specs. Keep touting GHz, MHz, resolutions and other useless nonsense.

I love it straight to the point and so true.

Google is big brother and has a much more pervasive hold on your life and activities. I love irony.

Flying through space and throwing up specs like we’re suppose to be blown away…THAT’LL get the masses to leave their iPhones.

That commercial is evidence that Motorola doesn’t get it and makes me shy away from their new tablet. I know high-school kids that could make a better commercial than that, sheesh.

Can I please ask: what regular consumer actually gives a crap about this “freedom”/open vs closed/fanboy shit? I may be wrong but surely, for most people, a phone is just a phone – not a statement on life? And if an iPhone floats your boat (because it’s uncomplicated, “just works”, doesn’t make you deal with seemingly complex techie stuff, etc) then surely that’s all that matters?

I think manufacturers have their heads stuck in the sand at the moment. It’s weird.

I liked it, although I hate my Droid X. They should also include in the spot whether, or not, the XOOM will be bogged down with Motoblur; thereby, rendering it useless and on par with ‘One Design’??

“2011 looks like 1984″ normal people don’t even know what that’s referring to. Took me a while to realize they are referring to computers right? Kinda suspenseful tho :) . My opinion is that they put too much information and tech specs. People don’t want to think in a commercial, they want to be drawned into believing they actually need the product.
