AT&T to launch 12 new Android devices in 2011

mobile

Last week we discussed AT&T’s smartphone strategy in a world where the nation’s No. 2 carrier can no longer rely on the iPhone to carry its smartphone business alone. Long story short, AT&T will finally begin to take Android seriously this year, beginning with the Motorola ATRIX 4G, the HTC Inspire 4G and the Samsung Infuse 4G. In an alleged internal document published by Android enthusiast blog phandroid, AT&T mentions that it will launch no 12 new Android devices this year. That works out to an average of one new Android device each month, of course, and at those odds it’s a safe bet we’ll see a few gems surface over the course of 2011. Gems as in awesome Android phones and tablets — not the Samsung Gem, that is. The document also reaffirms AT&T’s intention to launch 20 4G devices this year, as the carrier stated during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

Too bad they didn’t put this “release” out a month or two ago… already read of quite a few dropping AT&T recently for Verizon IPhone or Thunderbolt…

I think ppl would of left for the VZW iPhone anyways, but i dont get why they would leave for the Thunderbolt over the Atrix unless ur just an HTC fan. I think ATT will be just fine, and i think an announcement like this stinks of desperation and i love it…for once ATT isnt saying “look we have the iPhone” they are saying “we are gunna offer a variety (IOS, Android, WP7, BB).” They have high end devices no matter what OS u prefer, and a few years/months ago u couldn’t say that.

All thats left is for them to fix their network in markets ppl have issues in, and fix their prices because they cant really compete against VZW with how they are now…u cant charge the same and offer worst service…just doesnt make sense IMO.

This whole Verizon iPhone thing could mean a win for both iOS and Android looking at what is happening. Its a pity it took the loss of iPhone exclusivity to happen tho.

More choices for consumers is the best part of it all.

Don’t you know it’s illegal to speak neutrally and logically on the internet? Away with you.

Guess there will be some happy Android fans, finally on Att.

Not sure how Android on AT&T is going to improve anything when iPhone already sucked on AT&T.

Lol, I meant ,as far as, having a decent array of Android phones.

Why are they still calling their version of HSPA+ 4G?!

    • Anonymous

      Same reason t-mobile does?

      • Anonymous

        T-Mobile has > AT&T’s 14.4Mbps HSPA+. AT&T still not in the ballpark.

I think what proof2006 was meaning was how Tmobile calls the Mytouch 4G which is on the 14.4 mbps network 4G when really only phones on the 21mbps network REALLY qualify to have the 4G moniker. I’m not knocking Tmobile cus I’m posting this from my Mytouch 4G. Which I love. For me I’m going Mytouch for life. As long as they keep releasing Mytouch phones these are the only phones I will own ever again. I loved my Mytouch 3G. Now I love my Mytouch 4G. Mytouch 4life.

I love how you guys left out the most important part:

“Yum. We’re also hearing that the Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G will both be available starting on February 14th and that employee training for the devices begins Wednesday, February 2nd.”

Announced during CES…all the “tech” sites are just reiterating what De La Vega said almost 3 weeks back

  • Atrix!!!

Is Atrix the code name of the newest iPhone????? I hope so!!!! Except it doesn’t have Gingerbread :(

      First attempt at comedy?

  • lemmesee

Lemmesee, 20 4g phones minus 12 androids minus maybe one blackberry and two W7 leaves plenty of room for more than one iOS device.

    • Asas

Apple has already said they will not release a 4G product till 2012. Sorry apple fanboys, no 4G for you.

  • JNM

I think that this is great. We now have a announce number of phones that we know little to nothing about, no dates, and have no idea whether any of what is released will be worth waiting for. Perfect.

Maybe, just maybe now that at&t isn’t the only game in town for the iPhone, they will do the right thing by the rest of their phones and RELEASE UPDATES? I got a streak in October, and got tired of waiting for the 2.2 update and did it myself.

    • Asdf

the streak is not supported by AT&T. Blame Dell for not updating that one. However AT&T is to blame for all the other androids that havent gotten updates.
