Samsung Galaxy Tab sales surpass 2 million units, report claims

Tablets

According to a report from Korean news agency Yonap, Samsung on Wednesday confirmed that sales of its Galaxy Tab Android -powered tablet have passed the 2 million mark. Samsung announced that Galaxy Tab sales had surpassed 1 million units early last month, and now this new milestone comes after roughly three months of availability. The Galaxy Tab is Samsung’s first Android tablet, and the device has been popular in the U.S. — having been launched by all four major cellular carriers — and in other key markets around the world. The report states that Samsung’s tablet is available in 94 countries from 200 different wireless carriers. The Tab’s top three regions are Europe, North America and Asia, where Samsung has sold 500,000 units, 350,000 units and 330,000 units respectively. Samsung is expected to unveil the second-generation Galaxy Tab next month at Mobile World Congress.

So, if my math is correct (and it always is) that means the 3 millionth galaxy tab will sell towards the end of May?

Seems mighty strange that if they are selling so well the price has had two cuts since the holidays here in the States.

but they only sold 350,000 in the states and like someone said i wonder if that counts returns. I personally know about 10 people who originally purchased one and only two kept them. everyone else got an ipad or tried another tablet.

There is a bigger world outside of States!

… and Japan(may or may not be in Asia group) and Middle East and India. I think that sounds doable.

      • http://twitter.com/mistercarter7 Mike Gonzalez

        Japan and India is Asia…duh…
oh and Middle East is so populated they bought the rest… haha, keep it real, they say they sold more than they did

Typcially India and Japan are not included in Asia, but more of subAsia and Japan is many times on its own in terms of sales markets.

You sound silly. The Middle East is Asia as well geographically. We aren’t just talking geography here.

My favourite device currently. Hits the sweet spot for my tableting needs.

Are refunds part of the total sales number? ;)

What was Jobs saying about android tablets being DOA and 7″ being the wrong size?

If I was in his condition I wouldn’t be talking about things being DOA. js

    • RJay

well the ipad sold more then 3 million in 3 months, i would say that the galaxy tab is doa. a million sales isnt bad but it really isnt great

      • serpentor

My definition of DOA would be Samsung canceling the Tab altogether. But if DOA is not selling something in the same numbers as Apple does then you’re right.

I guess every smartphone on the market is DOA also.

Galaxy Tab sold 1 million in one month according to Flurry. 2M in its first quarter according to Samsung.

iPad sold 3M in its first quarter and 7.3M in the most recent quarter.

Galaxy Tab numbers are impressive — from zero to selling at 25% of the “magical” iPad’s run rate with a $600 “DOA” “train wreck.”

It’s actually a great device minus the telephony that was ripped out from North America.

    Jobs, what say you ?

It seems the Tab has opened the floodgates for an avalanche of DOA 7 inches tablets

I’m going to get one to tether to my Droid… if there is a wifi only version. I haven’t had money til now and want a small convenient tablet. Bigger screen than my phone, but I already have a tv, pc, at home.

  • Letter2shannon

Im using mine now. Only samsung product I would consider. My wifes epic still on 2.1 and this came with 2.2. Go figure.
i agree…hits the sweet spot in size.

lol as much as this was trashed in reviews?

    • RichardL

The reviews were mixed. WSJ and NYTimes were positive. Giz trashed it.

South Korea and Japan were not included in that number. (400,000 units for South Korea, and another 200,000 for Japan.)

Can’t wait for the second-generation Galaxy Tab. :)

    Am still an iPad lover…

  • S Shideler

Living here in Seoul, watched the news bit about this. What they said was it was 2 million units shipped to vendors. This number does not show actual sales. Makes you wonder why samsung isn’t beating it’s chest about actual sales like they did with the galaxy s phone. Somethings up on this one.

  • HiImAdam

Samsung needs to get better communicators on staff, as it keeps creating problems of perception over how well the Galaxy Tab is doing in the market with its unclear statements. The company has come under fire for claiming that 2 million Galaxy Tabs have been sold, then back-pedaling when pressed admitting that these are in-channel sales to partners, not consumer sales.
