AT&T finally looks to Android as Verizon iPhone 4 launch looms

mobile

When it comes to high end superphones that make gadget fiends’ mouths water, AT&T has been a no-show in recent history. Some argue that the arrival of the iPhone made the carrier complacent, thus allowing Verizon Wireless to carve out a new role as the premier U.S. supplier of beastly smartphones. With Verizon Wireless preparing to launch its own version of the iPhone 4 next month, however, AT&T will look to regain its perceived position as the top smartphone provider in the U.S. where variety and power are concerned. Up to this point, AT&T has been very slow in adopting Android, likely as part of its efforts to keep Apple happy. It did launch a few Android smartphones of course, but none that could compete with the high-end devices being offered by competitors. All that will change in 2011. AT&T announced several top-of-the-line Android devices at CES earlier this month, and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson alluded to the fact that more Android goodies are in store from the carrier this year. “[AT&T is] going to be a heavy participant in the Android market this year,” Stephenson said on the company’s earnings call on Thursday. He went on to state that AT&T would focus on both Android phones and tablets in 2011, saying the latter would be a big factor in driving revenue growth.

Makes you wonder if it’ll be too late for ATT. All those years of kissing up to Apple and not offering any solid Android phones could come back to haunt them………

    • Johnathan

Not really, because of the iPhone At&t has more subscribers than Verizon. Android will do well on At&t just like it’s doing well on Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile

      • Jaytarmstrong

ATT has more subscribers than Verizon?? Really?? I think your off about 20-30 million customers.

      • Anonymous

I think you are the one off the mark here…20-30 million more? LOL They are dead even. Verizon had roughly a 500k advantage after Q4. Hardly the 20-30 million difference you’re talking about!

      • Johnathan

maybe you should go mosey on over to Gizmodo are read up on how At&t passed Verizon because of the iPhone

      • David F

at&t has 95.5 million and Verizon had 94.4 million at&t took over thanks to strong 4Q 2010 results.

      • David F

2010 4Q results show it all

      • Anonymous

When Verizon bought Alltel, they picked up 18 million customers. Which put AT&T 10 million behind Verizon. Now they are over half a million ahead.

“It did launch a few Android smartphones of course, but none that could compete with the high-end devices being offered by competitors.” Not exactly true. At&t did get a galaxy s phone. thats about as high end as you can get.

      • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

But do you realize a lot of people went to AT&T because AT&T was the only carrier in the US (well technically still is) that offers the iPhone? I would guess that anyone who switched to AT&T from Verizon solely for the iPhone and no other reason would think about going back… especially if they don’t have unlimited data (and yes, I read AT&T is offering it again but I believe it said to people who bumped down from unlimited, not new subscribers who didn’t have the opportunity to be grandfathered in.

      • king

Don’t think so. To costly to switch for 3GS and iphone4 users

    • Anonymous

If you’ve seen the Atrix 4G then you know this is not the case. ATT is back in the game.

      • Anonymous

Agreed. The phone is amazingly thin, gorgeous and super fast. ATT is putting a TON of money into marketing and in-store demonstration. Lets hope it can deliver.

    • Donny

Android had only been relevant for a year since Verizon offered the droid so At&t hasn’t really been neglecting android for years. They also had the better blackberrys so while I do think their service and pricing blow its not like they didn’t offer good phone besides the iphone.

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Yep, I went to Sprint for the EVO during launch last summer when I realized AT&T doesn’t care about a good (or great/excellent) Android device due to the iPhone.

Because of the changes at Sprint, I will probably be going to Verizon soon.

    • Peter

Actually, AT&T is getting newer and more powerful versions of the Andoid and the phones . . .see Atrix!

The setup in the picture looks like a the best dock for a phone possible. when is it coming out?

    • http://twitter.com/whatwhatjbdo Jeff Brayer

End of Feb…juicy looking phone for sure.

    • Guestbro

I don’t like the placement of the actual dock.

You could be on the train or bus, or even the library, and someone could jack your phone and run.

Then you’re stuck with a keyboard attached to a screen without your awesome phone.

      • SKINNI

LMAO!!! That would be funny as shit! But at the same time, that thinking would be like saying “I dont hold my phone in my hand in public because someone might jack me!”. Nothing of value should ever be out in public if that be your worry.

On a side note, Ill say im not totally for the position due to the entire dock not being flat with the monitor closed. I only worry about how much the dock potrudes out/up & its sturdiness. Placed in a bookbag/laptop bag I would worry about snapping it. Other than that, the only flaw is IT’S NOT ON VERIZON!!!

  • prop guy

android has no soul, not in a blasphemous sense, but in the love/hate sense… its just there… existing

    • Anonymous

      existing?.. more like dominating

  • aaron

This seems it should have been done right after CES.

    Its a bit late now.

  • Scott

Well DUH! Not that hard to see the picture. I for one, am welcoming this. I’ll be switching from my iPhone to the Atrix and I couldn’t be more excited. The best part is that I don’t have to switch carriers, I can continue to get my great service and my corporate discount. Score!

    • Anonymous

‘Great service’?? You must have one of those MicroCell towers (or, two tin cans).

      • Scott

I know, right? One of their 95 million customers that says they have great service. I have better service than I had on VZW (although that was 4 years ago). Customer service has been very good as well. Some people don’t need a huge red V on their phone to have good service!

      • Anonymous

        Too bad that most do!

  • Anonymous

‘Perceived’ being the key word in the above article. And, just like everything with “poor reality testing” they’re in for a massive psychotic break. Lithium, anyone? Cuz’, if you’re still on Cingular after Verizon’s super smartphone attack (iPhone 4, Thunderbolt, Bionic, Samsung 4G, and the many to come Tablets), you’ll need a hefty dose of it.

  • Itsjustmee

where’s android 2.2. for captivate att?
why is my 3g slow or does’nt work at all?
why do my calls drop all the time?
    where’s hspa+ att?
all talk and misdirection. no action.
companies that lie deserve to fail

    • Donny

But you can use data and talk at the same time!!!!!!! Well if you can find service…..

  • Anonymous

I got to play around with the atrix and the laptop dock at CES.. I’m honestly super jealous of this setup. I never though I’d see the day I’d be jealous of anything ATT related, but this setup is really awesome!

  • http://twitter.com/TheBubbaTex bubbatex

I bet this will be a big hit with the corporate accounts. And if it makes calls better than the iPhone did for me on ATT, I might even consider moving back to ATT for it.

  • BoogerOffATT

Who cares if AT&T’s network can’t handle the load?

  • Anonymous

Really, So we have never considered the iPhone to be a superphone? Some would argue that AT&T has had THE superphone for a long time, just don’t count me with em’ but just bringing it up for discussion.

  • http://www.facebook.com/satya.chowdary99 Satya Chowdary

android phones + tablets + “COVERAGE BOAST ” will yield results for att….

  • CMC

And off those Android phones that they sell will be tightly controlled by them with the interface and market hacked and restricted. Too bad we can’t get a “pure” Android.

    • Anonymous

Oh come on. That’s what XDA-Developers is for. The Captivate community there has been great and has really done a lot for the phone. Most carriers cripple their phones in some way and add garbage no one wants or needs. I had my phone rooted, the bloat removed, TouchWiz removed, and customized within an hour of bringing it home. It’s only gotten better since then, thanks to the devs over there.

  • Whatnow

Here is the deal I don’t know about this motorola phone that hooks into a docking stations like laptop…
Im all for new fictionality but I think the novelty would wear off real quick for me.
I mean if I want to use a laptop, I would just use a laptop…
I know this is a bit off topic but I was disappointed with the turn out of these “super phones” at ces. The hardware was ok for the most part… Dual cores and all. I think the motorola phones looked to be the most promising hardware wise. But none of these phones are coming with 2.3… All have custom ui’s
I guess people say that’s what forums like xda are for, but it’s not like your going to login and it’s going to resolve all your probems with your new android phone. You may find a root but it could still be awhile for a good stable stock asop rom to come out which supports all the functions of your phone with out breaking anything… Google really needs to get a handle on theses upgrades, and custom ui’s but until then I’m switching to another platform. Android looked promising when I was first using the OG Motorola Droid, but since my carrier isn’t selling any nexus phons I haven’t found that same experience on any other phone.

  • Anonymous

    Atrix +1
    AT&T -1

    Net gain = 0

  • Rd

I have had a captivate for around 7 months too and never had a problem with gps and I installed 2.2 on it right after I bought it. I think it’s a great phone

  • Ericb70

this is the most pointless idea ever!!! if you really need to download something off your phone use a USB cord and plug it in and done. why do i need my phone on my desk top whats the point!!!

  • Mickey Android

For ATT to be successful in the Android market, they will have to dispose of the incumbent carrier attitudes and let the customer do what they want their phones within the boundaries that the phone behaves itself on their network. That can be done with Android, look at the XDA developers that have expanded and improved upon the phones. They also need to come up with a way to deploy the most current version of the OS (be it Android or Blackberry or …) in a quick and easy manner. ATT really needs to change their attitude.
