Sony Ericsson Xperia arc to launch April 1st, £459.99 in the U.K.

British retailer Play.com has listed the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia arc on its website, and has made the anticipated handset available for pre-order. The Xperia arc is listed with an MSRP of £499.99 for the unsubsidized version of the smartphone, though Play.com is offering pre-orders at £459.99 ($727). The listed release date for the handset is April 1st, though no official launch date has been confirmed by Sony Ericsson. The Xperia arc was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month and is billed as one of the thinnest smartphones in the world. The device features a 4.2-inch Reality Display, an 8.1-megapixel camera, 720pHD video capture support, an HDMI-out port and the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. Sony Ericsson has not yet confirmed pricing or a release date in any market, saying only that the Xperia arc will be “available globally in selected markets, including Japan, from Q1.” Of note, Play.com’s second-quarter release date suggests that the U.K. might not be the initial launch market for this handset.

I don’t like Sony Ericsson phones too much because their battery life is horrible

Who on earth would pay that much for something that’s really no better than anything that’s on the market now and is doomed to irrelevance with impending arrival of the Optimus 2X and it’s Tegra2-toting cousins?

Why should I pay almost 800 hundred dollars, when motorola XOOM will be less expensive and is more powerful?

I have always favored SE phones because of their battery life…curious now about Gamble’s problems with them. I have noticed they do tend to feel slightly, if not a lot cheaper, more plastic than other phones, but if I knew my end user was cautious with a phone and needed to talk a lot on the go, I always tried to put them in a Sony Ericsson. They’ve been great as long as it does not get dropped or rained on a lot. I use one personally myself since I ignore my phone most of the time, lol, working with them all day makes me less likely to enjoy one and the older I get the less social I am, lol. I leave it in my purse most days, only texting occasionally, and forget to charge it. It lasts forever before it starts to yell at me for more juice.

I am glad to see SE catching up in this market. Finally a current OS versus a phone coming out with 1.6 when 2.2 has been out a bit already. I have always liked their style, and the fact they have always had a decent to great quality camera for both pics and vids and media playback (incl. free headsets had nice sound) in even their crappy little W300i flips and such. My old crappy flip W300 SE beat out the camera on my brand new BB Bold back when the 9000 came out, by far. Throw in some “blinky” like they had on the oldZ310a and I’m sold! This is a pretty phone!
