Motorola ATRIX 4G laptop dock may cost $150 from Best Buy

mobile

An Android Central forum member claiming to be a Best Buy employee brings news of possible pricing for Motorola’s upcoming laptop dock smartphone accessory. The unique dock, which was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show, transforms the Motorola ATRIX 4G into a smartbook with a full-sized keyboard and a trackpad. According to the forum post, the dock will initially be a Best Buy exclusive and it will retail for around $150. The source of the claim is said to be an AT&T district rep who also stated that Motorola’s ATRIX 4G would become available before other 4G phones from AT&T like the Samsung Infuse 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G. Unfortunately, no specific launch timing was provided, though earlier rumors point to a March 1st release.

i think that is reasonable if the screen is nice quality, and it doesn’t feel cheap/flimsy. hopefully the keyboard/touchpad/touchpad buttons feel nice as well

    I never really understood this…

It’s a dock that lets you extend the OS of your phone onto something that resembles a small laptop.

Although a netbook is a little thicker and heavier… a netbook actually runs Windows and programs you might actually need… right?

I mean… you’ll still have to carry this thing in a bag… just like a netbook.

I don’t think running windows is necessarily an advantage. Admittedly, I first thought this wasn’t really all that big a deal either, however, the more I play with my CR-48 the more I appreciate the extent of what “just a browser” can do.

The phone is on already, so I’m assuming you will be able to plug this in and get it running FAST. Faster than a netbook can boot Windows. Being “just a browser” I’m expecting it to run that browser faster than a netbook can push Windows. Plus, no need to worry about “yet another computer” being patched and virus definitions being updated, and all the other “fun” that comes with Windows. Additionally, you will supposedly have a 4G internet connection without the added expense of tethering (yes I know I can tether with MyWi on a jailbroken iPhone, but with the Atrix this is all built in).

I originally thought the docking looked rather flimsy, but I saw a video of a guy at CES playing games with the Atrix docked while he was holding the entire thing upside down. So… maybe the docking is more secure than I originally thought.

It seems to me that there are a lot of people who use a computer for email, spreadsheets, document editing, and web surfing. This is the target audience for this device.

As for your second point, it would save a ton of lugging. The use case is plug it in to a dock at work, work, take just your phone with you and plug it in to a dock at home, work/surf. So 90% of the time you _DON’T_ carry the laptop dock. That laptop dock would be just for those times when you travel for work.

I think the potential audience for this kind of thing is huge, but whether Motorola can tap it is a different question.

Thanks for finally running this. I sent this in HOURS ago. Always speedy BGR. You also FAILED on the release date. BOTH BB employees said they’re expecting stock of the Atrix on February 13th. You’re welcome :)

Great pricing, if I was on ATT this most definetly would be mine

  • HeckYes!

i have actually gotten to play with one of these phones from a motorola rep that came by. They are going to be a very popular seller. They feel right, sized right, solid build with a GORGEOUS screen. And the thing is absolutely lightning fast. very excited for this one

I was worried the docks would be ridiculously overpriced, but $150 isn’t bad… oh yeah, it doesn’t have a fruit on it…

PALM’s problem with the folio? AHEAD OF THEIR TIME. if this is getting the coverage it is. This means teh world was not ready for the palm eco system. Cant be how they incorporated it all. It is very similar to current implementation.

im need to khnow the price cif cairo 50 piece from this model nad confirm me about the deffrenr speceifications what you have. thanks

  • Bavoss

How much more awesome would this dock be if the phone sat where the track pad should be? Think of the possibilities! (Including not having your phone hanging off of the back of your laptop like Leonardo DiCaprio on the Titanic.) Seriously, why would you put the phone there?

    • Brian

Orientation may favor the dock port, antennas and 3.5mm jack. Additionally, configuring a drop in gimmick for inserting the phone might be more complicated and it would have to run resolution interpretation to manage the mouse which in this configuration is probably in the firmware of the notebook dock.
Lastly, this way the main camera is still available when the notebook is propped while the screen is protected.

  • Tigersingh52

what’ s the point of that dock, my nokia n900 could allow me to connect to my laptop without a dock.
It’ s a waste of money.

    • Wmay

Because the dock will weigh next to nothing unlike your laptop. I won’t feel devastated if some dirtbag steals that dock, if they stole my laptop I would be out a) a lot of money b) lose a lot of my data

  • Anonymous

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like there could be a rash of people getting their Atrixes (Atrixi?) stolen because some asshole just sprints by, jerks it out of the dock, and keeps moving.

    • Anonymous

      Why just grab the phone?

      • Anonymous

You could take the whole thing, but the position of the dock provides a unique opportunity to take the phone.

    • guest

Hopefully they did it right and it locks in when you open the screen.

  • Greenidangyl

If you don’t have a need for this doc, would this still be the phone of choice in the next few months? I’m coming from a Blackberry which I love, but now I have to run a bunch of medical programs and my browser is just not fast enough on the blackberry. Willing to switch to the Axtrix, but going between this and iPhone or something else (on ATT). Everything I hear about the Atrix is about the laptop, but I want to know about the phone.

  • Steel

someone needs to build a generic dock that will accept any modern android device like this. It’s be great for word processing and surfing.

  • j-fo

will the data you use while connected on your computer count toward your 2gb plan?

  • Neoprimal

Hmmm. Could this mean the death of the netbook? Tablets are replacing them already and now these pretty incredible docks for phones which are (I think we can all agree) beginning to become powerful enough to run pretty hefty apps.

  • Lizang

Wouldn’t it be awesome if the phone became the trackpad?

  • http://twitter.com/redigits Steve

I just wish they would build one that would be compatible with all of their Android-powered products. It would be great if HTC did that for their Android products as well.

  • moosebump

what happens when you get a phone call? do you answer on your “laptop” or do you take the phone out of the dock. This whole set up would be better if the “dock” was wireless – though I’m sure that would lead to lag or other probelms.

    • Jinxr

Not sure about the receiving a call issue, but the dock is powered by the phone so being wireless would negate that feature and require a power brick.

  • Llcoolpage

I think it is going to be great, something new for a change. I just hope the laptop is going to be good. If it does sell for 150 i would buy it, how many laptops can
buy 150.00/ the dock is kind of dumb in away most phones you dont need buy a dock to connect to the web..
