HP Topaz webOS tablet revealed

Tablets

Another piece of the puzzle that is scheduled to take shape next month at HP’s webOS press event looks like it has just been revealed. A render of Palm’s large-form tablet was first seen earlier this month, but this time around there are specs and plenty of details to go along with new renders and slides. Codenamed Topaz, this webOS-powered slate will reportedly feature a 9.7-inch 1024 x 768-pixel oil and scratch-resistant display, a 1.2GHz processor, an Adreno 220 graphics processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a front-facing camera for video chat, integrated Beats audio and two 3,150 mAh batteries that should deliver 8 hours of usage. HP will reportedly launch a Wi-Fi-only version of the Topaz initially, but 3G and 4G versions will follow soon after — obviously.

Preliminary details have also emerged surrounding HP’s next-generation Touchstone technology, which will be featured by the Topaz. Compatible functions include charging, of course, as well as image and file sharing, multimedia streaming, wireless printing, integrated cloud services and even “wireless video game playing via Touchstone video dock.” Consider our interest piqued.

The look of the Topaz is very, shall we say familiar, but we’re still excited to see this puppy become a reality alongside next-generation Touchstone technology and some new cloud-based services to compliment Palm’s gorgeous OS. We’ll be on hand in San Francisco next month to see just what HP has in store for us, and we definitely wouldn’t be surprised to see the Topaz make an appearance, albeit with a different name. Let’s just hope HP also has some sleek new webOS smartphones in store as well.

wrong even check the GPU intergrated chipset with the qualcam bench marks from the older version, its faster then the current leader from samsung:

wow just looking at the benchmark test of the adreno 200, and 205 against the current major GPU chipset SGX540. Looking at the results it shows that the adreno 205 was faster in alot of cases, then other test shows (on smartphones) with the G2 using the adreno 205 chipset actually outclass the galaxy s which has the SGX540 in it. Now claims state that the new adreno 220 will be leaps in performance over the current 205, so this gives you a idea of how strong the GPU chipset HP is using in the topaz, and hopefully their smartphone devices.

android OS, nor apple cannot compete with Webos its the only fully intergrated web based kit OS on the market (android isnt even linux based, and is flawed potentially inferior look it up) as well as the lawsuit will bring down Google. HP is the future with Palm period they started touchscreen smartphones on top and intend on finishing on top.

Thanks for the comparison of a GPU that’s not in Xoom

your entire post is just off … nearly competitive to a wack job’s resume. That said, for starters, Android IS based on the Linux kernel. Programming for it may be done via C, C++, and Java. You should suspend your vitriol until you’ve conducted proper research. It’s insulting as a reader of many things written to come across illogical, poorly prepared crap like your extravagant claims.

      WEBos > Android.

        Delusional?

      topaz < xoom

By that I mean, this tablet probably won't cost $700 minimum as reported. WHICH IS A GOOD THING, espcially since the first model will be WIFI initially and won't require a contract! This is the way it should be!

Palm lives on through HP. Please don’t give it a plasticky finish, and this might be a winner. I always thought the PRE would have been a much better phone if the actual phone was made better. The OS rocked, but the phone was flimsy and plasticky.

    • serpentor

The UI rocked but it was always very laggy for me. And like a lot of people I had the cracked screen issue, but thankfully it happened just under the 1 year warranty period.

      • i told u so.com

proboly had a early version, of course when intially released Palm it was stilll beta, even now at 1.4.5 I run laps around phones like the EVO (which i have through my job too). Webos is so innovated and easy to use even before a update (hardware, and webos2.1) its a better phone then anything Google puts out. Now with HP behind webos, this new ecosystem only Webos can truly harness being fully web based OS, and the only one on the market the world will know what real innovation is.

Why can’t I video chat with my mom on a webOS device? My sister and mom do it all the time with their phone (non-webOS). Since my webOS is “innovated”, why can’t I do innovative things?

Side note: I also wish I could watch Netflix. :(

rememeber one thing this is no longer little ole, no money palm, this is HP 30 plus billion dollar a Quarter company. That gross more profit then Apple, and Google combined, and has product contracts with the top manufactuers in the world. So no it wont be any thing cheap with these products.

      • bob

They may have a lot of money but, all of the HP notebooks I’ve seen are plasticky crap. I’m not sure why this would be any different.

      • Anonymous

Actually, Apple’s net income was much higher than HP’s in 2010.
        Apple: $16.6 Billion
        HP: $8.76 Billion

        Almost 100% more in profit.

  • Rlapp

They should have just called this the Palm iPad and then promptly shut down this shameful copy cat company.

    • i told u so.com

palm was out way before Apple know you facts before you make dumb comments

      • http://twitter.com/brorfred brorfred

Do you mean that the first Palm PDA (March 1996) was released before the first Apple PDA (Aug 1993) or that the first WebOS model (June 2009) was released before the first iOS model (June 2007)?

      • Brian

Hmm, Apple pulled out of the PDA market and disappeared from anything approaching it for a decade. Hard to count that.

The think the person was referring to Palm smartphones before Apple smartphones… I think by at least 5 years.

you were not serious when you typed the comment right?

  • serpentor

I wish they could do a widescreen form factor.

Smart choice putting only front facing camera on a tablet. I don’t think I would use a huge tablet to take pictures around (a.k.a. weird look) . Most people have their cellphone to do that. No back camera also mean slightly cheaper price .

  • Anonymous

This will be the first real comparator to the iPad. Its good to have quality choices.

    • Anonymous

I think the only competition the iPad will see will be from the Motorola Xoom. This may be nice as far as the software is concerned, but in true HP fashion, it will be cheap plastic.

      • Brian

The leaked specs say Gorilla Glass.

If plastic is necessary for the Touchstone features that I’m reading, then cue “The Graduate”, plastics are the wave of the future. (I’m not sure it is necessary or that Topaz will be plastic.)

  • PewterTSI

Oh nice, lets just wait until Apple comes out with something and copy it.

  • nook Color

I already have my tablet solution but I wish the best for HP & webOS.

    webOS > (Android + iOS)

  • Eric

Wow, the amount of bad grammer in many of these posts shows poorly on the community of users here.

    • Hmmmm

It’s funny that someone who criticizes grammar spells it wrong.

      • Skull with Cigarette

its funny to think the community here is anything more than ‘poor’, Just a bunch of Apple nerds and Android queers constantly slinging lies at each other. Ironic the name of this blogsite has the word ‘genius’ in it.

  • Eric

Apple was doing 1024×768 on their tablet device a year ago. Surprised to see, a year later, HP come in with the exact same resolution. You would expect more. I expect more………

    • http://twitter.com/cefranco2 Carlos Franco

well to be fair, its still rumors that Apple will go 2x’s this year. There are documents even as of today that state the Ipad will carry the same rez this year. What HP will have to deliever on is hardware which includes the case. I hope they dont make it cheap feeling plastic. As far as OS is concerned though, i cant wait to set it in action!! While the Xoom may be spec’d better, i think the real contender will be the Topaz.

      • Brian

I agree with Carlos. Topaz beats iPad in enough other specs (and features) that it doesn’t matter if it is simply equal to iPad on this one.

As Carlos pointed out, Apple may have the same resolution for the iPad 2. Even if it has greater resolution, Palm there are leaks of a second 7″ tablet with the same resolution (hence more pixels per inch) coming later in the year

I really like webOS, hopefully, HP doesn’t F*** it up, and it develops into a more mature OS.

  • Anonymous

Let’s see the price HP, then we’ll talk. Other than that, it looks great!

  • http://twitter.com/axiomz Asif Baksh

Wait, I see a front facing camera but where is the rear?

  • Tech_User

those pictures look a lot like the ipad just only with that ugly ass hp logo

  • Mr.Knowitall

    iPad > Any tablet.

  • Hellpo

Playbook kills it with specs and probably every other category

  • Techwizz

Palm, is such a nice smooth os. I have android and iOS..can’t wait for palm. What ever they put out I’m ready to go back to palm. The best notification system and multitasking out there.

HP sucks balls. bought a laptop from them that cost almost 3grand. shortly after, the screen had multiple rows of dead pixels and the machine itself was a victim of constant freezing and rebooting. They did nothing to rectify the situation. as far as im concerned, HP needs to pack it in and go bankrupt
