HTC: First-quarter revenue and shipments to double in 2011

mobile

In a presentation to investors on Friday, HTC revealed first-quarter projections that left attendees wide-eyed and smiling. In short, the Taiwan-based cell phone maker sees revenue and shipments both doubling as it continues to make waves in the smartphone market. “We continue to see strong demand from existing products and expect recently launched 4G products to help drive shipment growth in 2011,” HTC noted in a statement. The company projects first-quarter 2011 revenue to reach $3.2 billion on shipments of 8.5 million units. While overall growth in the smartphone market is expected by some to slow from 13% in 2010 to 8.4% in 2011, HTC is showing no signs of faltering. Exciting new devices like the ThunderBolt, Inspire 4G and DROID BIONIC are waiting in the wings, ready to pounce and help HTC maintain its position among the leaders in the Android space. The company is also reportedly preparing a second wave of Windows Phone 7 handsets as Microsoft’s emerging mobile platform continues to gain momentum.

The droid bionic is made by Motorola, not HTC.

    • engineerGA

Yep, Droid Bionic is surely a Moto device.

      • Sam

Inspire is a Samsung device too, I think.

      • Anonymous

No, the Inspire is HTC but the Bionic is Motorola. Seriously how do you mess that up? It’s what you do and cover??

  • Anonymous

I wish there were plans for an HTC LTE Nexus phone.

Good to see HTC doing well. They make some fantastic phones.

I’ve yet to see a thin like HTC smartphone that is 4 inches and bigger, If HTC fails to deliver on the EVO 2 designs (in my eye) I’m either switching brands (but not to samsung) and carrier. Step up your game HTC Motorola and LG is already with Dual core processors and higher quality lcd screens.

    • Anonymous

The OS cannot utilize dual cores, so mostly pointless.

      • Anonymous

That is completely false. While dual core obviously won’t produce double the real use speed (even though benchmarks are double of when only a single core is enabled for the test) Android can and will use both. Does that make it better than the new Snapdragon processor in the TB? I don’t think we’ll know until they two can be tested side by side.

      • Anonymous

The OS will not be able to utilize dual cores. Only apps that are built to,
will be able to. Do some reading. I’d post links if I could.

      • Anonymous

Dual Core is use for propaganda, a lot of people don’t know the purpose of dual cores

  • Anonymous

    Motorola Droid Bionic, helloooo?
On a side note: that’s one wealthy individual (and alot of pork fried rice and wontons too)!

  • Anonymous

8.5 Million total? That isn’t 8.5 Android devices either.

Could have been different I suppose…….

    16.2 million iPhone
    10 million iPod Touches
    7.33 iPads

……. But yeah, HTC’s numbers are good too.

    • Anonymous

Well let’s see…1 manufacturer vs 5+. Uneven a bit, eh? But you’re a blind fanboy.

      • Anonymous

“Well let’s see…1 manufacturer vs 5+. Uneven a bit, eh? But you’re a blind fanboy.”

What does that even mean? There are way more than five companies building Android phones. What that means is that with X number of manufacturers more Android should have a double digit market share lead on Apple’s iOS and they should have had this lead last year.

      • Anonymous

Double digit marketshare lead? There are too many players for that to
happen. RIM and Nokia still lead the world. Android went from 0-26%
marketshare in one year! What more do you expect?

      • Anonymous

        @ tim242,

What is it with you and this imaginary 0-26% in one year?

First Android phone in 2008……… 1 iPhone, 1 Android phone
2009 Android phones Droid, G1, MyTouch, Galaxy, Hero and six more, still only 1 iPhone
2010 Android phones explode in numbers but now there are two iPhone models selling. Look out!!!

So, where is your 0-26% thing coming from?

      • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

except you forgot to mention the fact that apple is able to produce many phones due to the fact they are such poor quality. I wouldnt brag about mass produced garbage. You soound like an idiot. I know in your mind you are smart and witty but to everyone else you just sound like a blind idiotic fanboy. Pathetic is what you are. I feel sad for you.

        APPLE SUCKS.

      • Anonymous

The G1 went on sale in October 2008. By that time Apple had sold maybe 20 million iPhones (Maybe).

There are roughly 100 Android devices now. The fact that Android does not have a double digit market share lead over iOS proves my point that these manufacturers are combating one another for a piece of the Android pie.

All those people wanting the iPhone didn’t wait, they bought a different phone. Poll after poll has shown that over 50% of Verizon customers are interested in the iPhone. Does that mean that 46.5 million people will be lined up on day on for the iPhone? No but it does mean that Apple will sell 10-15 million Verizon iPhones in 2011.

Spec wise there are more phones out there now but the problem is that they all run the same Android. Either 2.1 or 2.2.

People buying the iPhone instantly have a device that ties into everything else they have been doing.

Android needs a huge iTunes competitor and they needed it back in 2005 when Google purchased the platform.

iTunes is what makes iOS the choice for so many people. Is iTunes bloated? Yep. Is iTunes slow to sync? Yep. Do people wish it was better? Yep. Are those people using anything other than iTunes for the most part? Nope.

Again, Android is great. Android will continue to grow (modestly) but iOS is a vertically integrated platform that will continue to grow at it’s current pace.

Apple will easily ship 160 iOS devices this year.

Apple’s revenues will be $110 Billion for 2011

You are right though it isn’t over, it was over before it began. It merely took good execution to ensure the results.

If you have over 10 manufacturers building around 100 devices and you are not the dominate market player (by a long shot) someone screwed the pooch.

      • So…

Why does any of this matter? I like choice, I like competition, right now I’m using the _____ phone, next year if it’s better I’ll get the ______ Phone.

      • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

get a life. I know you probably just FINALLY were able to save enough money to buy your first iphone. but you are about 4 years too late. They arent cool anymore. Youre not cool. You’re an idiot. An idiot who likes top blurt facts and figures to cover up the fact you have no opinion of your own. You are a fanboy. and the worst kind. Its great to believe in something but to come on a website and act like you created it yourself is, well…… douchebaggish. So just shut your idiot face and save yourself the embarassment. apple sucks massive balls. and so do you. end of discussion.

    • Anonymous

That’s the argument you use for Android selling more…

      • Anonymous

Android selling more what exactly? Phones? It’s comically close. What makes it comical? The fact that world wide there are literally 100 android devices scattered between different markets and Android is barely eeking out a lead.

Android for all purposes should have a double digit market share lead on Apple. Actually they should have had that lead a year ago.

My point on HTC’s numbers versus Apple’s is that HTC is the gold standard of the Android world and they only shipped 8.5 million phones (not all Android devices either). Apple sold 16.2 million iPhones and had another 3.5 million traveling in the channels. As they said at the conference cal, had they been able to make more phone they would have sold more phones.

Come February they ship the Verizon iPhone to a mass of people that have been waiting. Q2 is generally a down from Q1 but this Verizon demand is going to help Apple to sell 20 million iPhones in Q2. Big deal though because once China Mobile gets the CDMA iPhone that is when the real numbers are going to sky rocket (China Mobile has over 600 million subscribers.

Look, Android is fantastic and I would never deny that. The facts are though that the platforms openness is what holds it back.

Android has peaked as far as the explosive growth goes. Apple’s iOS platform has merely just began. That seems silly (even to me) but is most likely the absolute truth.

      • Anonymous

iphone got a huge headstart. There was no Android for 2.5-3 yrs, while
iphone was selling like hotcakes. Android went from 0-26% marketshare in a
year. Are you expecting miracles? It’s not over yet, I assure you. I don’t
think the ViPhone will sell like people think. 1. Not many people would wait
that long for a phone. 2. There are many better choices out there now. 3.
Both Att and Verizon customers are mostly in the middle of contracts. I
doubt people will be paying $325:ETF’s and $600 for a full-priced iphone. It
will sell, but not the way it once would’ve.

hey moron…. androids been out half as long as iphone and is ALREADY taking over. what dont you get about that? Youre beloved Apple is obsolete. and losing ground fast.I give it 3 years. I am sure they will release one or two more crappy iphone versions(they all suck and are hugely embarassing). The fact you even brag about a company that has no idea your gay ass exists is COMICAL. you are an idiot. I just cant stress it enough

$3.2 billion on 8.5 million devices is only $376 per device. . . Apple would make $5.3 billion if it sold 8.5 million iPhones ($625 average selling price, up from $594). Oh wait, it sold just about double that, for over $10 billion in revenue.

    • Anonymous

Must have a low self esteem or be a young child to run to a tech blog and pick a fight when there is none to be had. It’s a financial report, not an insult to your mommy. Now back to your room and no video games until you can behave yourself.

    • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

the only reasons apple sells so many devices 1) simple minds need simple devices and 2) alot of stupid people with too much money in the world. PERIOD. apple sucks., i dont care what their sales figures say: its only a testament to the fact alot of idiots buy idiotic crap;. simple as that.

  • Anonymous

So I am reading a little more into their financials and finding some cool things out. For all of 2010 they had sales of $9.55 Billion……… for the whole year.

This quarters profit was $502.1 Million dollars on sales of $3.2 Billion.

I am not sure what Motorola is guiding for this quarter but I hope it is better than this.

Android has peaked folks. It is what it is. The may grow another 5-10% market share but their major growth is history.

    • Supercop

Wow you are comparing Htc’s earning to a 35 year old company. What was Apple’s revenue back in their 13 year mark?

      • Anonymous

        Are you kidding me?

HTC has been building phones for 13 years? Is that your Argument?
Apple has been building phones for a total of 3.5 years.

HTC’s quarter shows $3.2 Billion in revenue from their phone business that they have been in for 13 years.

Apple’s iPhone only sales (16.2 million vs HTC’s 8.5 million) were over $10 Billion.

So, in Apple’s 3rd full year in the phone business they crushed HTC and their 13 years of experience.

In 2010 HTC shipped 24 million phones (not all smartphones and not all running Android) with ASP’s of $375

In all of 2010 Apple shipped roughly 48 Million phones (all smartphones and all running iOS) with ASP’s of $600+.

Not only is Apple selling twice as many phones as the 13 year incumbent but they are earning over $225 dollars more per phone.

      • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

so youre argument is Apple earns more per phone? LOL. thats a terrible argument. All that proves is they overcharge for technologically obsolete garbage and morons like you buying it, not knowing the difference between an iphone and an iturd. (there is no difference)

    • Anonymous

I hardly call 6% marketshare growth in the 3rd quarter, “already peaked.”

      • Anonymous

I understand the unwillingness to accept what is happening. There are some factors at work that might help you understand what is going to happen.

        Apple opens retail stores
        Apple gains new customers
Those new customers become iTunes account holders
Those iTunes account holders buy another Apple product

        Rince and repeat

Apple grow at this pace until they stop opening stores. They have the cash to scale up their business to whatever heights they choose.

No one company and now 20 companies combined have the momentum or control that Apple now has.

If you average out Apple’s growth over the last 5 years and add it to the next 5 in 2015 Apple will post yearly revenue of $500 Billion dollars and most likely will profit $100 Billion plus.

Engadget has a great article on Android as we type.

Seems that Oracle’s case against Google is even stronger than first thought. Android won’t be effected really. Other than the prices of your devices going up. Licensing fees, gotta love em.

  • Anonymous

No other device has ever grown as fast as Android. Apple had a very large jump on the market because there was nothing else for a customer to choose from. Since Android has evolved the platform has grown twice as fast if not more then Apple. Being an Android user I am very exciting about the new upcoming devices. The sky is the limit.
PS Still love my Nexus One. root root root

    • Anonymous

You are right. Apple hasn’t grown a bit. iPhone’s ready to be discontinued and as you, a fellow Goofan (aka Apple Hater) and obviously VERY smart, based on your typing, and I know Android will have 100% share of the market!!!!!! Android FTW!!!!

    • Anonymous

      Welcome to the sky.

Android has peaked as far as the explosive growth goes. Each manufacturer now has to fight competing manufacturers for customers. On Average it looks like manufacturers are netting around 15% profit per device right now. As Android flattens out over the next couple of years these manufacturers are only going to be able to compete in one area, price. As their prices lower so will their net profit. If you net profit goes down so does your R & D. Your devices become cheap(er) and the rest is just a race to the bottom.

What else is hurting Android? Well, all the people developing Android devices are also going to be developing Windows Phone 2007 devices.

iOS device sells and Apple has 100% control of that money. There are only two other companies that can say that, RIM and Nokia.

      • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

wrong. but nice attempt. Android now controls the smartphone market. yes, beating out even the crappy and boring (and over rated) iOS. Sad but true. Welcome back to earth.

That’s awesome! It definitely shows that an American company (e.g. Apple) could never grow the way a Taiwanese company can. And us in the Goofan (aka Apple Hater) nation know that Taiwan rocks and Cupertino sucks!
