NVIDIA to unveil quad-core Tegra 3 processor at MWC

mobile

Devices powered by NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2 chip were the talk of CES this year, but that hardly means the famed fabless semiconductor company is going to rest on its laurels. According to company General Manager Mike Rayfield, NVIDIA’s next big announcement is already set to be made next month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We know NVIDIA is pushing hard with its mobile products already, but the company is preparing to turn it up to 11 — MWC will apparently be the arena for NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 unveiling. While details are scarce for now and NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chip won’t make its way to production devices in the immediate future, Rayfield says it won’t be long. “[The Tegra 3] will be in production around the same time as my competitors’ first dual-cores will,” the NVIDIA exec told Hexus in an interview. Right on — we can’t wait to see quad-core smartphones and tablets hit the streets and put those punk dual-core devices in their place.

    Do possibly want.

    my god, this is great

Why is Nvidia rapidly becoming my new favorite mobile chip manufacturer ? :)

Also, he didn’t say quad core. That was just wishful thinking from the article writer.

      Good point

if they can get the power consumption & heat down as low as they claim, they own me

so dual cores are already outdated…jeez.

We need a new phrase for that “DBA” dead before arrival lol

everyone wants more more more, but then when it comes to battery they can’t take 4hours on a charge. Quad-Core on a phone YAY!!!! oh wait my phone will only be on for 10min….

Definitely not for phones. Even Tegra 2 is pushing it for phones, considering the huge battery Tegra 2 phones are getting.

      But for tablets…

tegra 2 consumes less power while giving moire performance than tegra 1, tegra 3 will be the same. Nvidia’s chief said that the performance will go up and the consumption will be less than previous generations.

Please read up on the technology before making statements about battery life.

Multi core processors are more efficient. In most cases they are built on thinner silicon, which in and of itself leads to less power hungry processors. The amount of time the processor spends doing work is far less on Multi-cores, thus the chip itself consumes less overall power.

YOU SHITTING ME!!?! Quad Core? Maby I should wait till next year.

Watch, TouchWiz and Motoblur will become so bloated that it will require 4 cores to run at a barely usable speed.

I don’t think there is a need for Quad-core in phones.. I mean in Tablets it’d stand out.. but Dual-core is enough.

Think ahead your phone with such processing power you could make one processor read your hand gestures another to throw the image on the wall. Instant desktop.

finally someone has some vision to understand what kind of features are going to need such processing power….

Just make sure you have a strong back… to carry those massive batteries!

But yeah, quad-core would be SICK. I sit at a desk for work all day, so battery life isn’t THAT big of an issue. :-D

Hahaha… I remember when I was about 15-16 years old and one of my friends said he didn’t see any reason to make a computer faster than a 486 with vga graphics… Wonder what he is thinking now…

i’m really glad to see things like this. we aren’t waiting for the cash flow to come in to make some sort of “progress”. they’re doing it all on their own, or seem to be, for the good of the future! i’ve always preferred you NVIDIA!!
