U.S. launch of Nokia X7 cancelled according to WSJ

The Wall Street Journal has confirmed earlier rumors that Nokia’s upcoming X7 smartphone for AT&T has been cancelled. The Nokia X7, which has not yet been announced in any official capacity, would have been a unique option for AT&T subscribers. It features the latest version of Nokia’s Symbian operating system and four speakers that create a surround sound experience. According to The Journal’s sources, Nokia cancelled the U.S. launch of the device, which was scheduled to be announced ahead of Mobile World Congress next month, because AT&T was not going to provide the subsidies or marketing support the phone needed in order to succeed. Nokia still plans to launch the X7 in other markets and will likely unveil the smartphone next month.

Nokia really does not get any love from the US. Why would ATT not subsidize Nokia’s phones? They subsidize any other crap phone they have on their shelfs. This just shows the hatred US carriers have towards Nokia.

      So true, and a shame!

It’s pretty obvious to me. The X7 would have to be positioned as a high-end device, which means large subsidies and a significant ad campaign since Symbian is not familiar to most Americans. And at this moment Apple and Google are crowding the smartphone market, as far as mindshare and exposure. Apple sells itself; with Android, carriers don’t even bother putting up ads for any single phone. They can stretch their ad budgets because they’re all carrying a fleet of Android phones at varying price levels. I don’t think any carrier is goint o put much effort into a one-off platform that isn’t already familiar to people. Look at Bada…

ATT&T is focusing on Android. They are hoping that they can make a comeback with the Iphone going to V, and I guess Nokia just got left out in the cold. Shame. Nokia can make good phones. My first phone was a Nokia back in the day.. oh well..

man, that OS and UI look ancient. Time to retire, Nokia.

What looks ancient about the OS and UI? The 4 homescreens? The customizable widgets? The changeable OS font? The transparency UI effecgts? The GPU accellerated OS backed by a seperate dedicated GPU that does 32 Million Polygons a second? The access to thousands of themes and wallpapers that can change every system icon? The ability to make your own themes and icons? The impressive, unhyped, always been there, Symbian standard, user customization options? Is that what is ancient? Oh…I see……
