Apple iPad 2 to have 2048×1536 resolution Retina Display?

Tablets

MacRumors is reporting that the next generation Apple iPad will feature a whopping 2048×1536 resolution Retina Display. Coupled with Engadget’s latest report that the next iPad will indeed feature a “super high resolution” display, and this all starts to come together. The 2048×1536 resolution is double the existing resolution of the current iPad and would make scaling apps very, very straight forward for developers, just like with the iPhone’s Retina Display on the iPhone 4. How does MacRumors come to the conclusion of the new 2048×1536 resolution, you ask? They have found pixel-doubled images in some Apple iOS apps, and they are exactly double the resolution of the existing icons. They are also named iPadx2, just like the iPhone’s higher resolution files. It’s going to take a serious GPU to power those kind of graphics, but we think Apple’s up to the challenge.

Never liked the resolution on the iPad. If it comes out with the rimless resolution I’m snagging one up!

also keep in mind how apple makes it products..never from scratch..just ups the antee on small details like scren/usb ports!..lol

too bad a nice screen doesn’t change the fact that it’s shit at everything else.

Will the iPad have the ability to finally multitask? Will it have dual-core processing power? Will it have an HDMI out? Will it have a USB port? Will it playback 1080P?

That’s 4 times the resolution, not double. Double would be if they only stretched it in one direction. Since they are making it more dense vertically and horizontally, it’s 4x the resolution. And, just for my opinion, holy crap that’s a lot of pixels! I would like to see their GPU pump out quality at THAT resolution. That would make most desktop GPUs cringe!

Some of the comments here are mindblowing. A highres screen, while impressive, is hardly a game charger. Just talk to any iPhone4 owner… yeah, pretty screen, but how’s that 4 year old homescreen UI paradigm treating ya?

Some perspective is needed here. A high resolution screen didn’t stop the Desire HD outselling the iPhone 4 in December in some territories.

It’s also hilarious to me that iPhone enthusiasts (and Steve Jobs himself) have WAILED on Android for fragmentation. Well, iPhone devs, you know have 4+ resolutions to develop for. It would be cool if you shut up about fragmentation now… thanks. :)

      Preach it! : )

That’s the beauty of 2X DPI. You can just develop for ONE resolution and it works great on the higher resolution without any modification and looks identical. Also ideally you develop your phone and your tablet applications separately. Apple was trying to leverage its iPhone ecosystem to jumpstart the iPad sales but they will eventually be separated.

  • Itsjustmee

and you need this high resolution on a 10″ screen because………?

Near print quality media display. It’ll be the best media consumption device available and text and pictures will look fantastic on it.

…assuming the rumors are true of course.

  • Fstmonte2002

Def glad I waited to get one…  higher res + camera = win my money

  • Destroyed

    PlayBook still destroys this.

It’ll be interesting to see the battery life on the playbook.

  • iPad2!!

I hope that Jobs’ wakes up and upgrades the next version of iPad to Honeycomb!!! Enough of the old OSes already. If he does that, it will kick Google’s butt really bad.

    • http://twitter.com/mistercarter7 Mike Gonzalez

u mean the same honeycomb that still uses tacky ass buttons on the lower part of the screen to launch multitask, get back to home and search? LMAO!! Android will take 2 or 3 years to be at the same level of iOS for iPad, like happened with the iPhone, the next iPad will go back to home, launch multitask and flip through apps by multitouch gestures, that’s what it’s all about, not tacky buttons that rotate with the screen haha

      • Droosh

You’re confused Mike. iOS requires a button. Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb) requires no buttons. In fact the tablet they used for development of the OS, the Xoom, has zero buttons.

That resolution would be awesome.. that’s one of the reasons I’m not fond of the current iPad: The pixels are very obvious – kind of like the iPhone 3G and 3Gs. It was so distracting esp. after my Lasik surgery :)

  • serpentor

Those icons were obviously planted by Apple. We already know they start rumors themselves so no one knows what to expect.

    BG, you just got trolled.

    Seriously though…who cares?

If it supports Flash content and doesn’t require iTunes, I’ll buy 2! Oh wait…

Ether that new A5 or what ever they call it is done already it won’t matter. Really think about it an ipad that has a better GPU than the GT 330m that’s in there high end 17in Mac book pro that has a whooping max res at 1920 x 1200 really are you fan boys that sheepish. How many times is Apple going to unzip their pants and drop that meat in your mouth and mind f##$ you. Their must expensive 27in monitor is 2560 X 1440 and this ipad 2 is going to be up their above there pocket killing MacBook pro that are top of the line with all the latest tech crammed in it. And lets say I’m wrong they pull it off that only means there laptops are going to change and everyone is going to run out and buy one. Didn’t ppl just open a new contract on an ipad this yr, how many pole are going to run out and pay full price from a new ipad with the difference of res and a front facing cam when the economy is more than f#%$ed. You all should go to jobs house and let him t bag you because that’s just how much you fan boys love his bs and as for never before seen get out of you box please

The new displays are already being advertised on Asian parts suppliers. The new display is 3.5x the price of the current display. I think the displays have now moved beyond rumor. See Appleinsider report.

    • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

You are so right. Only Google could pull something like that. You, Darkcloud25, are a top Goofan (aka Apple Hater) and we love you for that…

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

Or some taiwanese company, say HTC, but NEVER EVER an American company!

    Not. Possible.
    1. Not enough juice in the battery.
    2. 10-inch 2048×1536 display module does not exist.
    3. Way too espensive
    4. Way too much resolution overkill for any use.
    5. Would choke the GPU

    • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

You are soooo right. No way Apple could achieve any kind of “good” tech! They are designers not engineers! They are NOT SMART!

For item #2 and #3, that’s the beauty of Apple’s power. They sell such large volume of products that they can convince a company, say LG, to customize a production setup just for them. If you’re LG and guaranteed to sell millions and millions of panels, then you setup the factory to cater for Apple’s needs, which also brings down the price of the custom part.

Such a display would be impressive, but not possible at an anywhere near acceptable price point. What it could mean, and I think this is many times more possible, is that they are working on an AirPlay output to TV. Download high def content on to the device, watch it on the big screen, provided you have an AppleTV.

I’ll be replacing my 32GB wifi only with one of these bad boys.

  • http://twitter.com/cefranco2 Carlos Franco

if true, WOW! I wonder what the price will be. Surely, it wont start at $500. If it does, the rest of the tablet world just got tossed a hard blow!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/brettmlewis Brett Lewis

    a 9.7 inch display at 2048×1536? that’s just ridiculous.
apples cinema displays are 27 inches at 2560×1440

  • james braselton
