Geohot explains PS3 jailbreak and his new legal battle with Sony [video]

mobile

Everyone’s favorite iOS and PS3 tinkerer, George Hotz (geohot), recently appeared on G4′s The Loop to describe how and why he came to acquire the ire of Sony. Mr. Hotz, noting his passion for transparency and dislike of piracy, explained why he does what he does and why the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) — even in its newly modified state — doesn’t afford him safe harbor from Sony. Hit the jump, the video is waiting for you.

This guy is a beast. I hacked my PS3 with his stuff this guy is a genius! I don’t know why companies don’t hire him for security… imagine this. ONE guy can hack a system made by 1000s of smart Sony employees. Same with Apples guys. This guy could probably hack the US government network!

I appreciate his skills, but he definitely reinforces the stereotype about hackers being geeks

He’ll be on the payroll in no time. He’ll be forced to when he has to pay Sony millions in damages.

i wholeheartly think that unlocking a closed software system should be legal on your own purchased hardware. ban them from PSN but they should still exist.

  • SOny

    See you in jail….

You can’t say that unless you are already in there!

purchasing a device without actually owning the hardware IS being jailed.

    is that guy stoned?

Well if I payed $400+ for it I should be able to do what I want with it. Isn’t that how it goes, if I buy something I own it, I’m not renting it or giving it back to them. I think Sony is being a little bit ridiculous. They aren’t losing out on any money here, because they still get the $400-$600 dollars from each system that is sold. (Or rented in this case apparently)

    • Halfnyce785

A little addition to my comment, since these companies are essentially telling us what to do with stuff we own, then maybe we should decide how they spend the money we give them for “purchasing” their products. For example no more paying CEOs millions of dollars to gripe about what we do with stuff we buy.

To be fair, he tried and failed hacking the ps3 until the failover guys stepped in

    • douche

actually he hacked it months ago. it just wasn’t a main stream way of doing it.

If you’re smart enough to hack something, you should be allowed to do it lol

I’M NOT gonna bet banned from the PSN like you guys do. I just want to play my games NOT BE A CHEATER

    • http://www.twitter.com/hokes Brendan

      you’re completely off base.
this has nothing to do with cheating or piracy. a lot of us simply believe that when we buy an electronic device, it should actually be 100% our property and that we should be able to perform whatever type of computing on it we choose.

      • Lewis Kezagger

Think of it like this. You buy a car – it’s legal to modify it and zing it up. But its not legal to exceed the posted speed limit with your modified car. It should be legal for you to modify a PS3 or any other piece of hardware you buy with your own (or someone elses if they’re giving it for free) software. But again, not legal to use pirated software (games or anything other) on it.
