Apple’s App Store is about to hit 10 billion downloads

mobile

Smartphone users dig apps. Mobile developers dig Apple. Those two truths add up to a whole lot of app downloads from Apple’s iOS App Store. There are currently about iOS 340,000 apps available in the App Store according to Apple’s feeds. Collectively, they will soon have been downloaded a total of 10 billion times. Apple put up a new page to celebrate the imminent milestone, and it is offering a $10,000 iTunes gift card to the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad user who downloads the 10-billionth app. Apple launched the App Store on July 11th, 2008 to coincide with the release of its second-generation iPhone, the iPhone 3G. The App Store hit the 1 billion-download mark on April 23rd, 2009, and it reached 5 billion downloads 410 days later on June 7th, 2010.

    Damn, that’s impressive. 10,000,000,000? Wow.

    • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

Please refer to Serpentor before making comments like this. As I said, this is 5 people that have downloaded “stuff” 2,000,000,000 times each!

LMAO. Your image has “9,765″ and the countdown is only at “9,764″ as of 12:13pm ET. Traveling with Doc Brown to get that image?

Does this number also mean 10 billion purchases?

If it is not the case then they should clarify this.

    • Lkelly1125

10 billion downloads. Total including purchases.

  • Anonymous

That’s a lot of farting about!

  • Anonymous

You don’t have to like Apple, but you have to give them maximum respect for this. All jokes about fart apps aside… this is amazing.

    • Steel

Indeed. they created the entire app culture. Now, consider what this number might have been had they not limited it to the worst carrier for the phone’s entire existence.

      • Anonymous

Granted At&t has problems in certain markets, most carriers do. The truth is though that At&t only represents one of over 100 carriers that Apple partners with world wide.

    • serpentor

This is just downloads. An update also counts as a download. Not that amazing

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

So right. Actually, I believe 5 people have downloaded 2 billion times each. It’s NOT impressive at all. Serpentor, you are a Goofan (aka Apple Hater) and as such I command you!

      • Anonymous

Actually, they have repeatedly said that if they counted updates the numbers would be multiples larger. Read some news other than rumors sites.

        Fortune
        Bloomberg
        CNBC
        Financial Times

They all do a pretty good job of posting actual facts about business.

      • serpentor

        Provide an actual link.

Bloomberg I might give some weight to. The other ones peddle as many rumors as BGR does.

Jim Goldman when he was CNBC might as well ben working for Apple PR.

      • Jr67

You say that like you know it. You don’t. You’re guessing. How about you provide an actual link?

  • Apple Fanboy

Congrats to Apple on an amazing achievement. They deserve every bit of praise, and continue to dominate the Mobile space, with no end in sight. Keep up the great work Apple!

    • Anonymous

Really? Last time I checked (just a few days ago) RIM was still leading the mobile space, with Android closing in fast. Apple is in 3rd place : )

      • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

Actually, Apple is in 17th place and fading fast. I suspect they will be at 0% in about 6 months. TimmyBoy, you know this already man! You are a member of the board of directors of the Goofan (aka Apple Hater) nation!

      • Anonymous

Have all the market share you want. My money is on the company taking in 50% of available profits in the mobile space while only have 4% of over all Cell Market Share.

      • Anonymous

And you care about profits why? It’s not going in your pocket!

      • Anonymous

        @ tim242,

Strange thing is this, Profits ensure a company is able to stay in business. The bigger the profit the bigger the gambles you can take on new products and even new products in new markets.

Nokia sells more phones than anyone by multiples but their ASP’s are terrible so they are not as profitable. Apple will make more profit this quarter than Nokia will make for most of 2011.

If you are racing to the bottom on price in hopes to make it up in volume that is fine but sooner or later you have to freeze your prices or you will be losing money on every single device sold.

      • http://twitter.com/xEcho64x William Clancy

really? Last time I checked (just now) You had no idea what you were talking about : )

No but really, you should check something before you say something flat our incorrect. Also, last time I checked, RIM wasn’t making a fortune. Look at the stock prices, look at the earnings reports, and please stop posting.

First off, I don’t know why you ifools tout profit when it’s not going in
your pocket. We’re talking marketshare, not profit margin. I do realize you
ifools have trouble sticking to facts. Now, here are the latest US
        MARKETSHARE numbers:

        RIM = 34% and dropping -4%
        Android = 26% and rising +6%
        iOS = 25% and stagnant +1%

That’s the cold hard facts. I’d love to post links for proof, but bgr
doesn’t allow it. Go Google it, you ifool.

  • SKINNI

Like or hate Apple, alot of people choose to like. Pretty impressive numbers. Fart apps still count just like twitter, soccer, browsers, ect. Alot are stupid to some but someone cares to download it all

10 billion fart app downloads! way to go Crapple!

    Posted from my iPhone

      AHHH, the green of envy.

We know though, people across the globe love you products too. To the tune of you have over $50 Billion in cash on hand right?

  • StevenGlansburg

I hate the Apple app store. There are 0 ringtones that double as apps. It sucks. On android there are pages of rap songs premade into ringtones. That is what apple is missing out big on.

    • Anonymous

why would you need a ringtone that doubles as an app? there are several ringtones in itunes that serve the purpose. and there are several programs that turn your own music into ringtones.

  • Lou Ferrigno

What the hell would I do with a $10,000 itunes gift card?!?!

    • SKINNI

Sell it to the highest bidder (within reason)!!!

Verizon gets the first CDMA version of the iPhone. Adds to Apple’s overall available customers but the true CDMA version that is going to add something big is China Mobile.

    China
    South Korea
    Japan
    India

    70 million iPhones
    30 million iPads
    30 million iPod Touches

    2010 Apple’s Revenues were $60+ Billion
    2011 Apple’s Revenues should hit $100+ Billion

Good luck with that Market Share stuff.

    Open more stores
New customers buy first (of many) Apple products
New customers friends and family buy first (of many) Apple products
    Rince and Repeat

  • http://twitter.com/martinkem Martins Irechukwu

Bravo Steve Jobs, another milestone to add to the rest.

  • Namelesstwo

No matter what people say, those numbers are unbeatable. The App Store, like most of the stuff SJ and his gang come up with, have proven to be gold mines. Apple’s stock price is a good indicator. It keeps going up, cuz investors are wild over it.

  • Always Cool

Oh, and I forgot about Verizon. Now that they’re also on the bandwagon, I woundn’t be surprised to see that number doubled in another year.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BHMB52ZFMATI5KS7D4JT6UU7NA Eric W

Not sure verizon can handle the speed for that. Well I guess they can download the apps on wifi.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BHMB52ZFMATI5KS7D4JT6UU7NA Eric W

WTF am I going to do with a $10,000 itunes card? Cash money please.

  • izzle

I wonder if they take taxes off the $10,000… meanwhile, you end up with like a $4,000 giftcard

    • izzle

also… did anyone notice that it says on the website “Download the 10 Billionth App and you COULD win a $10,000 iTunes giftcard.”

Could win… all this hype and I could win… just like I COULD win the lottery

  • Anonymous

    That’s a lot of downloads..

  • Anonymous

Tired of hearing about how many apps are sold and downloaded. Tell me how many are useful to everyday living. After all we do live in the real world and there is no app for that.

  • volvospeed

the fart app?? are you serious stevie jobs? ahahahaha

    • volvospeed

im sure buiness uses will find that quite professional lmao
