Developers target end of February for Firefox 4 release

General

In a note to fellow developers, Mozilla team member Damon has declared the end of February as the target ship-date for Firefox version 4.0.0. The post reads:

Over the past several days, component leads have again reduced their blockers by identifying hard blockers and those we can live without.  We’ve around 160 hard blockers remaining, and historically it has taken us six weeks to reach RC once we have 100 blockers left.  We must press hard now.

Damon goes on to write that the first release candidate of Firefox 4 should be out by the beginning of February with a final version shipped before the month’s close. Anyone out there anxiously awaiting the release of FF4?

Sorry but does anyone seriously use FF? Its all about chrome

I use FF all the time.

I’ll give you that Chrome is the best out right now… but Firefox will always have a place on most peoples hard drives… if they speed it up so it isn’t snail slow anymore, well, it may just become my go to browser again. And it’s definitely a good thing that they are prying away market share from IE, so perhaps some day all that IE-only code will disappear and I can not have to use that damn “IE Tab” extension in both Chrome and FF…

You won’t need IE Tab when IE9 becomes the primary IE revision. That will take until Windows 7 reaches EOL, though.

Yes. FF 4 has everything over Chrome except:

-OAuth API (Chrome offers a solid one)
      -Speed

Panorama is by far the best tab management technology out there (thanks Aza!) and the general usability and customizability and opened up extension API makes Firefox the most malleable, configurable, and enjoyable browser of all time.

Only 10% of the Market uses Chrome – The top 2 browsers are internet explorer or Firefox……I use FF.

I have Beta 8 installed and love the new interface but it is laggy as hell and seems to have a ton of memory leaks. I hope that is fixed for the final release as I prefer it over Chrome but will probably switch to Chrome if they won’t fix those.

What is Firefox. All my PCs have a truly excellnt browser called IE8. Soon I will have IE9. Even better.

Guess to each his own… I find IE’s interface annoying and slow. Love me some FF!

Been using the beta since build 6 (on 8 now) and must admit it feels much faster than 3 & even later releases of 2. Not a hardcore techie so I don’t know what changes have been made under the hood, but it definitely reminds me of early FF builds which were smooth, responsive & rarely had any hiccups.

I’ve had a few crashes of the beta, but that’s to be expected, no?

Great news, I am using FF beta 8 and love it.

Have really been enjoying Chrome the last few months, but Google’s decision to drop h.264 in favor of ‘openness’ strikes me as so incredibly hypocritical that I may switch back to Firefox, or another browser.

I am using chrome now for 95% of stuff (a few financial websites still require IE – of course they gave us the mortgage meltdown so thats not too surprising). Sad to say, but I’ve uninstalled Opera and FF since they were not getting use.

I do wish Chrome was just a bit more flexible, for instance, I enjoy having an “omnipresent” set of links/bookmarks on the LEFT pane of my browser, and i cant seem to do that with chrome.

    Otherwise it rocks!

Tried Firefox 4 beta and hated the new user interface, I also hate IE 9 User interface also. I uninstalled firefox 4 beta and reverted back to firefox 3 BUT I currently think that Google Chrome has the best user interface out there for now so that is my browser of choice!! At least until Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer does better.By the way Microsoft, I hate Bing search and Bing maps too. Google runs circles around you.
