No porn for Indonesian BlackBerry users

mobile

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said in a statement on Monday that it has agreed to filter pornographic content from BlackBerry devices in Indonesia. The news comes following pressure from the Indonesian government, which put strict anti-pornography laws in place in 2008. “Research in Motion is fully committed to working with Indonesia’s carriers to put in place a prompt, compliant filtering solution for BlackBerry subscribers in Indonesia as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement. This is the first time RIM has agreed to filter content from its BlackBerry devices. According to a report from SC Magazine, the Indonesian government is also requesting that RIM establish a server presence in the country so that it can easily access and monitor data sent by its citizens from BlackBerry devices.

LMAO…so another reason to not get a BB. Seriously who can resist looking at porn when ur out and about doing something constructive with ur life…but still how the hell they gunna censor ur phone, its like BB wants ppl to look elsewhere.

    • ItsMeBeaches

I take it back…sorry BB fans i thought they were gunna try and filter it here as well.

        you are missing out, greatly

      • Dale

Not really…I’ve bee n happily married for 30 years. Besides, I’ve seen what porn does to its consumers & their families. Ever heard of porn addiction ?

      • serpentor

        @Dale

Anyone can become addicted to anything. You’re giving porn powers that it doesn’t have.

      • Lechero

Liar!!! and i say that with full knowledge that we are online and that people lie and bullshit all the time and yet I still felt such an urge from such a big LIE to point it out.

Hey, I’m pretty sure Sprint has a Customer Service Call Center there (I remember [trying] to speak English with one of their reps’ and I’m pretty sure the call went to Indonesia); maybe this is their big announcement February 7th, David Blaine is going to make all porn go away on Sprint smartphones? Could it be? An industry ‘First’?

  • Me

gees its getting worse .. BB is great but all this politics is ugly

  • Gallatore

what a joke! who the hell watches porn on their phone?

    • serpentor

I think to more people than not, their phone is their only computer, and only means of connecting to the internet.

  • Fail

Get with the times BGR. OS 6.1 details were just talked about at DEVCON and you’re posting about the porn issue.

    fail.

Where will the line be drawn on what a company won’t agree to censor for a particular government? RIM is already facing issues with some middle-eastern countries plus India and now Indonesia. Google censors in China.

People like to give Apple a hard time for their self-censorship, but they still permit you to freely surf the web.

    • Fail

Apple also isn’t in anywhere near as many markets as BlackBerry so you really can’t draw a comparisson.

Uhm. The reason they go specifically for RIM is because BB traffic goes through the carriers servers encrypted, so they have to enforce filtering at the RIM BIS servers. If the Indonesian gov’t wants to block porn on iPhones they can talk to the Indonesian carriers. No need to involve Apple at all.

But explaining that in the post would reduce the RIM-bashing opportunity, so instead we get a “censored” BB and confused comments…

  • Fail

and if you want to know why this is really happening…it’s because BlackBerry is more popular than anything in Indonesia. It’s like an epidemic there. People have their PIN on business cards…they trade PINs at bars, etc.

i thought blackberries were supposed to be like the most secure phones, and they want them to basically give all of the users data to big brother. WTF RIM??

    • Idiot

try getting a clue of what is being discussed here before posting

      • Anonymous

explain because i dont think U have a clue

  • Dale

Indonesia is a Muslim country and Islam is against porn. Simple.

    • serpentor

I think all religions are against porn.

Fuck the article.. I couldn’t stop laughing when I read the title lolz.

  • Goofan (aka Apple Hater)

What’s the difference between this and how the devil, Apple, does things? They sensor EVERYONE they don’t like! Google and Android are OPEN and free like the wind, and as such you can jerk off and do whatever you want because it’s open. Now the interesting thing is if Google, our lord savior, doesn’t do evil, does that mean porn ain’t evil if they allow it on their phones???

    • Lechero

Didnt google censor in China? i know there was a fight on that but not sure what happened there like this article i lost interest, im out.

      • Anonymous

Yes, they did. They were at the heart of that whole thing. Google is as bad as RIM in that sense. The only thing Google’s done is create a decent browser and search engine. The latter is even struggling now…there’s a report about how their search algorithms are antiquated, and their falling behind BING.

good for Indonesia to filter the rubbish…

    • Anonymous

Yes…now they can have that extra bandwidth for important stuff….IED’s, terrorist acts, and Curry recipes.

  • Anonymous

Oh, and Google sucks…that’s for you GOOFAN…talk about someone wanting to control everyone’s data!!??

I can say this since i live in Indonesia.
Whatever method they use, nothing can holds it.
In fact, the minister is like burning the whole barn just to kill a mouse.
Porn traffic in BB are relatively low. More like stupid pictures, food you about to eat pic or traffic condition travels more.
Porn travels from one person download it from a cellular store or website and then spread it via bluetooth to whom ask.
Of course there are escort service and call-girls/guys using BBM as their marketing tools but that’s not the issue here.
I myself don’t own one. I stick to iPhone. Less ping, more peace.
