Confirmed: Personal Hotspot feature coming to all iPhones in iOS 4.3

Exclusive

According to our source, the personal hotspot feature that debuted on the Verizon iPhone yesterday will, in fact, be making its way to all iPhones in iOS 4.3. We’re sure there will need to be carrier support for this feature, and for AT&T users it is entirely possible we might not see this right away. For those of you with more lenient carriers, however, we are sure you will be pleased to learn that you’ll be able to connect up to five devices over Wi-Fi to the iPhone’s cellular data connection. We are told the OS version will be 8F5148b, the baseband will be 04.08.00, and technical acceptance is planned for March. We have some screenshots to hold you over, though!

If you are not grandfathered , I’m pretty sure AT&T will require you to get on the new 2 gig plan. And to be honest even if you are grandfathered in you’ll lose the unlimited data. Unless if you are jailbroken and unlimited, staying away from AT&T would be the best option.

Haha, AT&T isn’t going to follow through and do this I bet. Plus, even if you could, you have a 2GB limit. That’s too funny.

HTC Evo + Root = Free UNLIMITED 4G Hotspot.

I hope At&t offers this at a reasonable price. My girlfiend has a 4th gen ipod touch and alot of times when we are out she looks for wifi signals for her stupid farm games.

Cool to see mifi coming to iPhone! Apple addresses my final reason to jailbreak. AT&T will probably screw it up though.

And how is this ‘confirmed’ if it is only from an anon source of yours?

I still have unlimited data, but I’m betting that I’ll have to agree to a new TOS before I’m allowed to tether on AT&T.

AT&T said they would revoke my unlimited data plan if i were to enable tethering (and I wouldn’t get it back if I removed later). Since they definitely consider this tethering, it isn’t worth going to a 5GB plan. Granted, I never use that quantity, but if it is possible to maintain unlimited data using upgrades, then maybe I can upgrade to unlimited data on LTE. I doubt they will allow that, but I’m hoping…

Oh boy! How I wish for an OS upgrade that would allow my BB 9800 to be used as a “HotSpot”! How suweeet it is for iPhone users!

Will iphone be available to Page Plus customers (Verizon prepaid service) ????

Already have this feature with MyWi from Cydia.:)

Can anyone tell me how fast the connection is? For instance, if I accessed the hotspot with my MacBook Pro, would the download speed be a lot slower than a DSL connection?

I don’t see why everyone is making this seem like it’s a big deal.. You’ve been able to do this on other phones for quite some time. I’m on Optus and get 2GB included data but most things I use my 3G for are unmetered anyways which leaves me with 2Gb to do with what I please. I used Joikuspot on my E72 and was admittedly disappointed when I discovered that you couldn’t use the iPhone as a wireless hotspur but there is still no need to make such a fuss over something so minor.

Never had any real need to use this feature, but its nice to know that its going to be there.

Is this news…? Well maybe 5 years ago. Android has this for quite some time. And my windows mobile had a comparable tool 5 years ago to have mobile internet on other gadgets like me notebook.

Why does everybody keep making a hype of all iphone functions although these functions are available years earlier on other phones?

Exactly the same with the iPhone4 and his second camera on the front. Has been presented as amazing and new, but other phones had it years ago for video calls and have even stopped using this feature.

If the iPhone has it, it’s cool? No! It’s just old…

That’s very good to people who have Tablets, you can use the Tab with the WiFi Hot Spot anywere withou pay a extra plan for the Tab

  • Eschwaa

AT&T will probably block this feature, much like they did with tethering by charging ridiculously high rates. It’s nice to know that with Verizon coming on board there is now a little healthy competition to keep thus in check.
