Samsung aims to triple smartphone sales; 60 million units in 2011

mobile

Following an interview on Tuesday with Samsung Mobile boss J. K. Shin, Korea Times reports big phones and bigger aspirations are set to from electronics giant Samsung in 2011. Shin told the Korean paper that Samsung will establish itself as a top mobile brand this year, and it’s swinging for the fences. Samsung projects smartphone sales in 2011 to triple last year’s totals, skyrocketing from 20 million to 60 million units. “I think we did better than our previous goal of selling 270 million mobile phones in 2010. The 20 million smartphones sold gives us a foundation to build on in the premium segment too,” Shin told Korea Times. “Our plan for this year is to sell 60 million smartphones and cement ourselves as a global top-tier brand in this segment.” Shin said last week that Samsung plans to introduce several new smartphone and tablet models next month at Mobile World Congress.

If they updated their phones, I would think about them. Until then, screw you samsung!

      Exactly!…oh and hook’em horns!

there is no way i will buy a samsung phone after i saw how they have handled the galaxy s updates.

    • Anonymous

How come no one is slamming them how they handle the Android updates! All they wanna do is reach their target but not take care of their customers!

    • Jefs2box

I don’t think it matters too much for them if they update or not. Personally, I won’t buy one of their phones until they start putting out updates, but I think I’m in a very small minority. Most consumers probably have no idea that they are missing out on updates. There are a small number of more savvy consumers (such as those who frequent BGR), but most people probably don’t even know what version of Andriod their phone is on, much less what version they could be on.

They are rapidly developing a reputation for slow updates and quickly abandoning previous devices that could come back to bite them in the ass and discourage return buyers.

I’ve think they’ve always had this reputation, as well as LG and Acer. HTC is guilty too, in some ways.

It’s a strategy that works for feature phones, but that pesky iPhone has set a different trend and expectations.

Seriously Samsung? You guys have balls, try updating your current crop of devices before talking about what’s next up to sell.

  • Anonymous

They are pissing quite a few customers off ill be very surprise to see them achieve that goal.

  • Anonymous

are they too getting the iphone

  • Drdfudge

Seriously ! Samsung doesnt get it. All I see is negative comments about there lack of software updates. It is true ! Fascinate on 2.1

    Dear Samsung,

I love your screens however if you would like to sell me a smartphone in 2011 please do the following:

Update your existing devices. Nothing like making your current client base pissed of by neglecting any sort of update in order to push more phone sales.

Put dual core processors in your phones. It your going to stick it to me by selling outdated software and refusing to update please at least have the common courtesy to give me a reach around and put out some new hardware that will make it a minimum of 3 months before being outdated.

They are still light years behind the competition. Where is the multitasking and tethering. And that there are no apps. The units sell sick poor. Show us the numbers MS. KIN died at 6 weeks, should it take 25 weeks this time?
The biggest flop at CES this year was WP7, there was no other than manufacturers who dared to come up with a WP7 unit. Perhaps not so surprising when it took six weeks for Windows KIN to die. KIN 6.0 6.5 7.0 are all dead or dying. Moribund fragmentation, it is called.

      This was quite puzzling. Thanks.

wow, sounds alot like the iphone when it came out,

no tethering, no copy and paste. no mms, no 3G, no ums, (and this is when every other phone had all that functionality)

was it a flop? you realize XDA developers has over 3 million users and most of them have windows mobile, MS already has a userbase for WP7 where sa the iphone had NONE

I don’t see it but good luck. I think a good idea will be to stick on building screens and memory. Everyone that I know that has a Samsung device says the same thing, never again.

Here’s the thing, They can sell a phone to everyone in the world once if they like, but that’s all they’ll get if they continue to suck so horribly at updates. NO ONE I know with a samsung smartphone is planning on getting one again because of the Froyo fiasco.

  • http://www.alexasigno.co.uk starralex76

too slim for me. I’m afraid that I could lost it and even don’t know about it. Or sit on it and don’t see that ;)

  • Anonymous

Yea, I’m not buying another smarthone period, until I see something that shows they care about how the device works. It’s a free for all, selling data and defective outdated phones out of the box.

  • Wil_sipla

Dream on.. They need to learn how to get an update out to its current customers. Because if they don’t I can guarantee their reputation is going be ruined worst than what it already is. Have not had an update since my phone case out in September.. A promise of Froyo every month and for months down the road no Froyo update. Froyo is firmware update 2.2.

I think they are being over optimistic considering the fallout in user confidence due to their extreme slowness in releasing OS updates.

I know I will strongly consider other manufacturers once I upgrade from my Fascinate.

    Samsung = No Android Updates

  • Ganim

I like samsung prodects but not all ….I think samsung is good in TV more than anything …is it tru ?

  • Python21

Definitely not buying another Samsung phone until they deal with updates. Seriously, 2.1 on my Galaxy-S? I will tell everyone I know about it, meanwhile my EVO is happily running 2.2 with a 2.3 update apparently in the pipes.

Instead of working on some shitty BADA (aka. bad) symbian os, why not put those programmers to task on something that actually matters.

  • Abc

    Fcuk you, Samsung.

  • Seabass

All I have to say where is my 2.2 and 2.3???!?!?!?!?
If they keep this up I’m feeling like everyone else here staying away from Samsung.
