Software

According to blog Pocket-lint, yes. The publication has filed a report citing “multiple sources familiar with the matter” stating that Android 2.4 — code named Ice Cream — will be released in June or July of this year. The mobile operating system’s nicknames are based on tasty dessert treats and are named in alphabetical order:

  • Cupcake
  • Donut
  • Eclair
  • Froyo
  • Gingerbread
  • Honeycomb
  • Ice Cream

No details about potential new features or improvements were provided. What do you think? Does a June/July timeframe for Android 2.4 make sense to you?

A good majority of devices are finally getting Froyo, a lot are still waiting on Gingerbread, and we’ve hardly received any news on Honeycomb. Yeah it makes sense if they plan on releasing the next few updates as soon as frickin possible.

I’m going to step up and call bollocks on this. You don’t release a more recent version with an older version number.

This is getting ridiculous, how can they release 2.4 when most if not all of their handsets don’t even have 2.3?! Google, you’re starting to tick me off…

Isn’t “ice cream” 3.1 more logical?
    2.3: gingerbread
    3.0: honeycomb
    3.1: ice cream
    3.2: jelly

So they are going to keep development of 3.0 and 2.0 on separate tracks, yet intersperse codenames as updates are made to each. This will be confusing for the media and techies who like to keep up with things. What will happen when they get to 2.9, will we see 2.9.9.9.9? Or will they skip to 4.0 and keep the phone OS branch with even numbers and the tablet branch with odd numbers. Or do they have something even more confusing up their sleeves?

They just got 2.3 to AOSP. They wouldn’t push another significant update so soon. I thought they said they were slowing to one release a year.

Where does Google come up with this stupid names?

What would make sense to me is if Google would make an official announcement about what Android 3 means for phones that already have Android 2.x. I watched the interview on Engadget and while that did answer some questions it didn’t answer them all and wasn’t an official pronouncement.

    Sounds good to me!
