Microsoft investigates superfluous data transmissions in Windows Phone 7

mobile

Following several reports of Windows Phone 7 devices sporadically transmitting “huge chunks” of seemingly superfluous data via 3G, Microsoft told the BBC that it is investigating the matter. The reports originated on a Windows enthusiast site where a reader claimed her phone was sending a large amount of data unbeknownst to her. She discovered the issue when she received an email alert from AT&T stating that her data usage was nearing its monthly limit. Several other Windows Phone 7 users mirrored the claims after examining their own data usage. Upon learning of the apparent bug, Microsoft confirmed that it is working on a fix. “We are investigating this issue to determine the root cause and will update with information and guidance as it becomes available,” a Microsoft spokesperson told the BBC.

So do you think AT&T gave some of that data back?

      No… they are greedy.

AT&T probably has no legal obligation to “return” any data. The customers may have a valid claim against MSFT for damages though.

Ouch, that could be a good drain on the battery….

Why is there any surprise here? Desktop copies of Windows show up with tons of flaws in them. Why wouldn’t their phone OS have the same? It is a total fail on their part, for something as stupid as this to happen on a mobile device. I suspect this is going to cost them……..

iPhone, too? I have iPhone 4 since June and each month I use less then 100 MB, so don’t think iPhone 4 has that problem. I have Wi-Fi at home and work, I hardly use 3G.

I have had the exact same experience with a 4G iPhone. Reported the issue to both AT&T and Apple within 4 days of the initial purchase. Replaced the handset but the problems continued. In my circumstance, significant data transmissions have taken place during dead of night time with the the device being powered down (sleep) and within my secure wifi network. AT&T investigated but could not provide any explanation. Word
