BlackBerry PlayBook will fail according to former RIM exec [updated]

Tablets

Former RIM executive Raymond Reddy reportedly believes that the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook will flop. In an interview with Business Insider, Reddy — who was in corporate development with RIM until 2008 when he left to start his own company — is said to have voiced several concerns surrounding the PlayBook that could apparently lead to a D.O.A. launch. His main concerns, according to the report, are timing, developer support and the platform’s reliance on tethering with BlackBerry phones. Reddy thinks the PlayBook may be late due to difficulties RIM is having while porting and tweaking the QNX operating system on which the device is based. He also thinks that the tablet won’t have many apps available at launch, and that the requirement to tether the PlayBook to a BlackBerry phone in order to use certain functionality could be off-putting for potential users. The BlackBerry PlayBook will be RIM’s first tablet device and it is expected to launch later this quarter.

UPDATE: A representative of Raymond Reddy emailed BGR to indicate that the original headline and sentiment conveyed in the Business Insider piece linked below misrepresented Reddy’s sentiment. It appears that Reddy never said the PlayBook would not succeed as was originally reported by Business Insider, though the source article has since been updated without notation.

Again, Blackberry should skin and tweak Android OS. They could use bbm and everything. Cmon Blackberry. I’d buy in a heartbeat.

    thought?

Did I miss how iPad or Galaxy can be used as a phone? Reality is every single tablet is a secondary / companion device to your smartphone.

Every single report has said he hardware and execution of Playbook (thus far) has been fantastic. Every hater will jump on the slighest “flaw” to announce Playbook is worthless / fail etc. Get over it .. there is no perfect device for everyone now or ever. It’s called choice.

The lone reason you cannot do native BES / BIS email, BBM is every Blackberry requires a PIN to operate on the NOC. It allows the end to end encryption and routing. Obviously Playbook WiFi does not have a PIN. I expect the carrier embedded ones well.

Most enterprises are still evaluating tablets, iPad while great for consumers has serious issues for corporate usage. We are anxious to evaluate Playbook and considering the 8,000 Blackberrys we have it will be one less wirless cost to budget for. No need to customize any websites – it works just like our desktop.

    With no 3G forget it.

“might” be off putting….how about definately off putting…thats what happens when you back your programming into a corner and arent willing to adjust re 1 to 1 device to bes relationship.

  • Chaz

He has a good point. Unless you are a bb user why would you buy the playbook over the iPad or android tablet?

    • WorldFullOf DumbPeople

Are you a friend of rmbo47, maybe a second cousin removed?

    • uCosom

Are you dumb… or just pretending to be dumb? Have you compared specs of the Playbook to the iPad? If so, you have your answer right there.

  • Apple&Android=Fad

Well, there is a reason he is a former executive, PlayBook still looks to be the best one available even if you don’t use a BlackBerry. Just because it doesn’t have a stupid little i in front of it and have some dumb ass green guy doesn’t mean it is going to fail.

  • miked

this guy left RIM in 2008…RIM bought QNX in 2010, he worked in marketing, not Product development…all he’s doing is plugging his own product, and 2nd rate news agencies are passing it on as breaking news…in this case because they are clearly shorting RIMM

    • zukidrvr

BGR should just pull this bogus “story.” According to a spokesperson for the former exec, he never made these statements. Your reporting is right up there with Fox News.

      Irresponsible.

If you need a BlackBerry to tether it for online use, only BlackBerry users will comprise the potential customer base. Nobody is going to switch to BlackBerrys from iPhones or Android phones simply so they can use a BB-dependent tablet. At least not while iPads and Android tablets and Windows tablets are available right now, and without the need to tether.

This is the Palm Foleo all over again. Anybody remember how the Foleo sold? Of course you don’t, because it NEVER SOLD at all. Palm pulled the plug at the last second. Unless RIM is happy with sales of only a couple thousand units, this is an epic fail in the making. I love my BlackBerry, but I also use an iPad. No way I’m giving up my iPad for the Playbook when it’s actually less capable.

Now stick a complete BlackBerry radio in the Playbook so it can be a self-contained BlackBerry experience and you might have a winner. But as it now stands, this is a poor concept. One with a record of failure.

    • Len

The Playbook has wifi. Most of the tablets that people are currently using are wifi only. That shows that tethering is not a dealbreaker to the average consumer. Also the beauty of tethering through BB is that you don’t have to pay a seperate monthly charge for data. It uses the data on your existing BB plan. As a current BB user, this eliminates the need for the 3G/4G Playbook which will come out in the future.

    • zukidrvr

To compare the PlayBook with the Foleo is like comparing a rusty, old Yugo with a new Ferrari. The Foleo had a terrible operating system, terrible apps, terrible user interface, bulky design, poor battery life, and required a bulky Palm Treo to do anything… and appealed to no one.

The PlayBook is powerful and loaded with features in a compact form factor. You don’t need a BlackBerry smartphone to use it, just wifi — like most of the tablets out there, including the iPad and the newly introduced Galaxy Tab wifi model.

The 4G version is coming early summer and other 3G and 4G models to follow.

I think they will do just fine.

    • WorldFullOfDumbPeople

Are you dumb? Have you read anything about the Playbook? Playbook less capable than iPad? Again, are you dumb? Let me suggest something to you. Give up your Blackberry and get yourself an iPhone. You are an embarrassment to other Blackberry users. Really? Are you that dumb?

  • BlueMan

No BBM without tethering a BB? Meaning no PIN identifier with the Playbook? What the hell is RIM thinking? Oh my…looks like iPad2 after all. To each his own.

    • Len

I have a BB, you don’t. I get BBM, you don’t. Your loss. Plain and simple.
If something as simple as BBM would sway someone from getting an iPad or iPad2 to getting a Playbook, then the iPad must be really mediocre.

  • Anonymous

Oh look. Another attempt by American tech bloggers to destroy RIM.

  • uCosom

Are all of you a bunch of morons? Apparently so.

Can the iPad tether to my BlackBerry? Or can the iPad mirror my Android phone? No, and I don’t expect that it would.

Playbook is a stand alone WiFi tablet it doesn’t NEED to connect to a Blackberry. How is this any different than the iPad in that respect? The already announced 4G version is coming shortly afterward. Either you don’t understand these concepts, or don’t want to. Go find something less technically challenging to understand…..like a toaster. Those who are seriously into texting and BBM will have a BlackBerry with QWERTY keyboard. I don’t care what touchscreen device you have. Texting on it will be 30-50% slower than a QWERTY keyboard. That’s not what this (or any tablet) is designed for.

  • uCosom

If BGR were reputable and would for a moment pretend to hold themselves up to even the smallest modicum of journalistic integrity, they’d pull the story, or at least rewrite the headline. Inserting [Updated] is meaningless. You continue to do damage to RIM’s reputation. I hope they see it and sue you for libel.

BGR, you’re pathetic in your reporting.

  • Chaz

Gaoing to try and be fair here, wow this is one of the most bs articles I have ever wasted my time on, well besides the article before this one. Get with it epstein

    • uCosom

      Except for facts maybe…

Well, maybe it’s time to set the record correct:

    1) Can you use the Playbook without a Blackberry?
Yes. The Playbook is a fully-functionally tablet that includes an app-store, internet browsing, email, calendar, contacts applications and messaging applications. Data services for these is either Wifi or 4G, depending on which version you get. (Source: Ryan Bidan, the Senior Product Manager on the BlackBerry PlayBook team)

    2) Why does BGR keep claiming I need a Blackberry to use the Playbook?
Well, no one really knows what BGR’s hidden agenda is, but the truth is you just don’t need a Blackberry. If you choose not to use a Blackberry, you get the same functionality as, say, an iPad, and in addition you also get
    - Video conferencing
    - Camera functions
    - Multi-tasking

    3) Do I get any benefit if I choose to use a Blackberry with the Playbook?
Yes, you do. Using a Blackberry provides the following:
    - The opportunity to save on wireless data fees by sharing an existing Blackberry data plan with a Playbook
    - Access to your secure BES or BIS functions, including Blackberry Messenger

    Hopefully, this clears it up.

  • TABpilot32

For a BB owner the fact that the BBM won’t work make me happy. It would royally suck to have two sets of BBM conversations this keeps it simple. RIM is on the right track here… The last thing anyone needs is to have different content on different devices… It makes things hard for people who actually have a life. I would love it if I could have the same set of content on my MacBook, BlackBerry, and tablet… The PlayBook is going to get us one step closer to this.

    • Cattonb

Good point. Hadn’t thought of that. Two accounts would be too hard to manage.

  • Max

Bwahahahahaha…told you, Blackberry MORONS. A former exec said this?? Wow. Just. Wow. 7″ screen. Too small to be useful, to big to be portable. And tethering required for true email application. And an app store with..oh..30 apps now? Listen up, morons. Listen good. You may not like apps but apps are what made the iphone and android huge. Not the ipod component of the iphone. Apps. Apps. Apps. Try some sometime. You may just discover in that pea brain of yours that apps really aren’t all about farting..they really work and are used DAILY.

    • Cattonb

Explain why one needs an app with full non compromised internet? Please provide a logical argument. Seriously. I still have yet to see one person explain why an app is needed when you have full internet. Do you need apps on your PC at home? Last time I checked Windows has done pretty good for itself without any apps…..why… because on a PC you have FULL INTERNET!

  • WorldFullOfDumbPeople

I’ll say one thing about Reddy Freddy. If you’re going to burn the bridge with your former employer, do it the Reddy way. Burn it fast, burn it good and leave nothing but ash.

  • Cattonb

We are all nerds here right. We go to the washroom, shower, get dressed and eat with our smartphones. I live with my Torch. I get anxious when its more than 10 feet from me. I am like most people I know my age (27) with respect to their phones. I will continue to be this way with my Torch even with the Playbook is released, thus, the Playbook is ideal. I don’t need it to have any independent email or bbm because I will always have my Torch 3 feet away from me or in my pocket and it will be linked via bluetooth.

I just don’t get what all the fuss is about………..are you people honestly saying you go outside and go to places without your phones?????

  • Steve H

Great Work BGR…….Reporting a FALSE statement and article. How about you follow in the footsteps of “Business Insider” and either remove the article or change the headlines………………..

Wait, we all know that won’t happen since this since goes out of it’s way to trash Blackberries and RIM on a consistant basis. BGR = #FAIL……….

  • rohdawgeleven

“….and that the requirement to tether the PlayBook to a BlackBerry phone in order to use certain functionality could be off-putting for potential users…”

    No kiddin’, really?

This is the kind of thinking that is killing RIM and Blackberry. I enjoyed my time with Blackberry but they really need to step it up.

I understand they are attempting to rely strictly on their very large corporate customer base. How much longer will that carry them?

    • WorldFullOfDumbPeople

What functionalities will be you missing when not tethered to a Blackberry?

  • DTownTony

I love how they don’t change the headline. God forbid you maintain some sort of integrity about news in regards to a non-Apple product. To be fair thoug, at least this website doesn’t hide there obsession with all things Apple. There’s a reason why this is “Boy” genius. Everyone knows only little boys and teenage girls use iPhones…..I’ll admit though, I wish I could hop on the bandwagon. I just wish Apple would come out with a device for professionals.

    • http://caspan.com Caspan

We should start a site MGR and talk about RIM FYI the M is for Man!

  • Guest

Agree with Reddy. If that tab requires a tether to a RIM handset – it is DOA. Maybe RIM execs think that’s cool, but they’d be the only ones. Good move, hopping off a sinking ship, Ray.

    • http://caspan.com Caspan

You so uninformed go do some research!

  • Victor Rakoch

…Since Mr Reddy left the company troubles started for RIM, something to think about ‘big RIM’. It is easier to lead than now to catch up! there is a lot of bozos there now…
