HTC ThunderBolt hands-on!

CES

Check it, check it — we just went all up close and personal with HTC’s Thunderbolt for Verizon Wireless, the device we first showed to the world, and have a deluge of photos and hands-on video for you to enjoy. The handset is, of course, LTE 4G compatible on Big Red’s network and features the latest HTC Sense UI with built-in Skype video calling, 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 4.3-inch display, Android 2.2 and MiFi hotspot mode. The screen looks beautiful, and we’re told it’s a Super LCD display. As far as feel goes, it feels good though a tad bit… hollow? Not the end of the world for such a lustworthy handset, right? Our gallery and video are all after the break!

Would it have killed HTC to include HDMI along with DLNA on the Thunderbolt?!? I mean sheesh not everyone has a DLNA TV or DLNA router to use this feature!!!! I’m sooooooo PASSING on this phone…Now I have to decide on either waiting out for the BIONIC or just jumping ship all together and seeing what the 2nd generation of the EVO brings on the Sprint!!! All I know is that Verizon dropped the ball on this one seriously and the $70 unlimited data, text, and talk plan on Sprint is looking so much better each passing second!!!

This phone is awesome. It has all the high-end specs. I love the aluminum unibody, kickstand, surround sound speakers, new sense, and the size. I couldn’t care less about HDMI. The screen is fine. The processor is 2nd gen 1 Ghz snapdragon, which is faster than the acclaimed new 800Mhz in the G2. The Bionic is a huge phone…bigger than the X!

I am with AT&T and I wish they were better. In my personal opinion CDMA/LTE were never meant to be together. Verizon LTE 5-12MB per second. EVDO REV-A, you’ll be extremely lucky to hit 2mb/s in real life. Falling back from lets say for instance 9MB/S( LTE) to 900KB/S(EVDO REV- A) will be a huge difference.
Falling back from a 9MB/S LTE(real life speed) to a 3MB/S HSPA or HSPA + would be more acceptable.
Another thing, LTE will consume more battery power, by turning LTE off (in the verizon case) you’ll lose the voice and data simultaneously feature . I wish VZW had move from CDMA to HSPA just like Bell and Telus.

CDMA = best in voice, LTE = best in data. Together, you get the best of both worlds. I’ve used my Evo in 4G and wifi. It’s not that big of a difference than on 3G, as far as browser performance and such.

This phone has an aluminum unibody, and a new gen processor!

I would never buy a phone that has essentially the same CPU has the Nexus 1–which came out a year ago. Technology moves too fast to already be a year behind the curve.

It’s a 2nd gen snapdragon ( same as in G2 ) which is faster than the original nexus 1

I was so excited for this phone when I saw pictures of it a while back, but sadly the specs just underwhelmed. No dual core processor was a mega fail. I want to buy a phone that will be good for the next 2 years, and this feels like it is already behind the game. The Bionic looked good, but the 512 MB of RAM sucks. Sadly, AT&T now has the best Android phone with the Atrix…Tegra 2 AND 1 GB of RAM. I guess I’ll just stick with my shitty 2.1 Fascinate and get a Motorola Xoom when it is released. I’m really sad that HTC let me down with this phone.

The ThunderBolt has 768 Megs of RAM, a new gen more efficient processor, and an aluminum unibody! I can’t wait!

This phone sorely disappoints me in an industry than evolve every second HTC is foolish for resting on last year’s laurels. This phone will only sell to the simply uninformed and those who simply must be first to have a 4g phone or can’t wait 2 to 3 months for the BIONIC. To be honest this phone is a little tempting for me as I still have the Motodroid 1 but I can’t justify this phone, can any of you? Keep in mind that at MWC HTC is sure to tease a phone or two with dual core snapdragon.

a 1400mAh battery is not good enough. that’s less than the Droid X. hmmm the Bionic is looking nicer by the minute.

Bionic has bigger battery because dual core eats battery. It makes the phone an obese bitch as well!

Sorry HTC Tegra 2 > 2nd gen Snapdragon. I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way right now.
