Hands-on with Samsung’s unnamed SCH-i520

CES

You have to feel just a little sympathy for the Samsung SCH-i520. Showcased next to handsets with names like Thunderbolt and BIONC, this poor little guy is only identifiable by his model name — it’s simply referred to as the “Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone” in Verizon’s official press release. Aside from the name, the device does boast a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 1GHz processor, 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and Android 2.2… so you can’t feel too, too bad for the device. We were given a few minutes with the i520 — which is all we need to form an opinion — and are ready to give you the skinny. Hit the bounce below and let’s do this thing.

The real star of this handset is — obviously — the display. The 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display has the standard 480 x 854 pixel resolution, but has 50% more sub-pixels reducing the visual noise perceived by the eye — this screen looks extremely crisp. The bottom of the device comes to a slight point (it isn’t completely rounded) and draws your eye towards the center of the phone. Despite the device’s dimensions it looks smaller than it is. We’re not sure if this is due to the slight point we just mentioned or the device’s thin waist, but it looks great. The back of the device is glossy, finger-print-magnetic black and is made of plastic (consistent with most Samsung offerings). The device has an HDMI-out port (which we love) and a set of physical Android keys on the front (another bonus). As you may have guessed by the device’s generic name — Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone — the i520 also includes an LTE chipset to take advantage of Verizon’s soon-to-be-expanding 4G network.

This set is still, however, nameless, and we would guess that it will be launching in the later-half of the first-half of 2011. Hopefully by release time, the device will be rocking Android 2.3.

LOL at the rocking 2.3 comment. I’m surprised it has 2.2.

Not to fond of “real” buttons. Rather have to soft touch keys myself. Other than that it looks nice.

Still, my next phone will have to have 4G, dual-core, and decent front camera. May have to wait until next holiday it looks like.

Moto Droid Bionic is everything you mentioned. 4g, Dual core tegra 2, and front facing camera with skype video chat already loaded on.

VGA front camera is not “decent”. Plus, I never buy the first of anything. This one will have horrible battery life. Additionally, I don’t want skype bloatware always on crap and the motos are locked from rooting. (I could be wrong on the locked part, but I don’t think so)

I’ll wait for a different hardware company that can be rooted and debloated with at least a 2MP camera.

yeah I feel you on that one man!
I’m big on the whole idea of these phone manufactures trying to lock the device from rooting as well.
I think most of us are indeed trying to get rid of the bloat as well as trying to get it looking and feeling as close to stock as possible.
I’m very disappointed, that all these so called “superphones” are not coming to market with 2.3 on tap.
I really think us Hardcore Android users need to make our selfs known to these carriers, Google, and the phone manufactures. They need to know that we want our devices updated quickly, and we want some high end stock android options…
I’m think I maybe looking at the LG I think it may have a dual core Tergra (or at least I hope so)… as well as a retina like display. This samsung displayed above looks ok, but no dual core, no 1.2ghz, same res screen, I guess now they are doing a trick with the pixels, but I can care less. I have a Droid X, and I can tell you the screen looks washed out, and the pixels look stretched… I want higher res screens on these 4.x’s

Its not as locked as you think. If it were, my droid 2 (which I’m typing on right now) wouldn’t be rooted and rommed. And I use skype all the time, so video chat with it on my phone makes sense for me.

    Reminds of the Blackberry Storm.

Not me. The Samsung doesn’t seem to run like shit and reboot every thirty minutes after freezing.

All of the software info screens said “I510.” Am I missing something?

    “later-half of the first-half of 2011″
If only there was a way to refer to this half-of-a-half…some sort of quarter, perhaps…

I’m sorry to go so off topic here…but is it just me or is that hand in the top pic holding the phone kinda disgusting and WAY creepy or what?

Super AMOLED screens look awesome and are the best out there right now.. I am so psyched about the Super AMOLED Plus I’m sure it’s going to be my next phone. Samsung makes great phones and I’m sure this will be top notch. Now I have something to look forward to getting!
