Android overtakes iOS in U.S. smartphone subscribers, trails only RIM

mobile

Analytics company comScore has published its quarterly report on U.S. mobile subscribers for the three month period ending in November of 2010. What’s notable on the report? Google’s Android mobile operating system has surpassed Apple’s iOS in the number of U.S. based smartphone subscribers for the first time with 26% of the market — iOS has 25%. With iOS just in its rearview mirror, Android has only one adversary left: Research In Motion. RIM currently holds 33.5% of the pie, but has been hemorrhaging users and market share for several months here in the States. We’re a little scared of what the comments section is going to look like, so try and be civil, yes?

Congrats Google! I really hate when people argue that Android success is due to the fact that Android phones sell for cheaper than iPhones. Yes, it may be true however, people still have to pay for Data on these phones. Data prices are not discounted! So, even if the Andorid phone is cheaper, you’re still paying for the same amount for the data plan as the iPhone, if not more! Therefore, if a person really wanted to have an iPhone, they would get it because obviously they can afford to pay for the data plan, point blank! The upfront cost of the phone doesn’t really have much of an impact on consumers as does the monthly data plan that one has to pay for the life of the 2 year contract. And, one more thing, if and if the iPhone comes to VZW, Android isn’t going anywhere. Just look at the other android phones coming out on at&t. Despite what people think, not everyone has an iPhone on at&t and things will sure get a lot more competitive with Android on at&t.

  • Dan

    Well,

The general facts I gather from this nonsense is the following.

    1) It pays to be on multiple carriers
    2) Selling 40,000 different androids has appeal to some
    3) Selling android phones for 1 cent or buy on get one free has its payoffs.

and the 4th fact and most important one ,

quantity does not equal quality !

    • QNX Please

By quality I assume you mean Apples great antenna design, its scratch and shatter-proof screen, non remove-able battery, yellowing screen, and sometimes combustible cords…

    • Monique

well from the nonsense your spilling, you would assume that people only care about the cost of the phone and not the data plan they have to pay for every month. Those that can afford to pay for a monthly data bill for a smartphone most likely will be able to pay for an iPhone if they really wanted one. There’s no discount on data plans whether you have an iPhone, BB, Android, Palm etc….oh, and how come the sales of palm and BB aren’t skyrocketing when they are available on multiple carriers and are often times discounted or available for free? Yeah, don’t think you have an answer for that. Maybe people actually like Android, if they didn’t, they wouldn’t buy it….period!

    • Monique

Oh, and please name all of the 40,000 ANDROID SMARTPHONES AVAILABLE IN THE US…I believe the top 4 US carriers carry between 4-8 Android SMARTPHONES each….and 2 of them are the same phone AKA the Samsung galaxy S series and the LG Optimus series of phones….

      • Supercop

Apple includes ipod touch and ipad in the count. You don’t hear them complain about it.

  • Estragon

Hooray, Palm hasn’t fallen off the list yet! (clutches his pre minus)

Hey Vladimir, what are you doing here?

  • Anonymous

wow you people are retarded. This information is obviously spun in favor of android. 1OS on 1 carries vs Os on multiple carriers +worldwide distribution of course its going to have more presence.

    • QNX Please

iPhone is on multiple carriers in every other country idiot

      • Don

And android has not taken off in those countries yet! idiot

Sorry android is selling well but compared to sheer number of Blackberrys and iPhones I see each day in different places: London, Paris, Tenerife, Barcelona, android is still an infant. If you go on the tube in London or a restaurant all you will see are iPhones and Blackberrys. Blackberrys are slowly falling in numbers and android are slowly increasing but what’s still increasing are iPhones at a very fast rate

      • Anonymous

Yes, Android has taken off in those countries, idiot. They are predicting that Android will take out Symbian by next year.

  • Max

Bye bye, RIM-job. Your crappy phone isn’t fooling anyone anymore. 2004 is long gone. You are making phones for 1997 and it ain’t gonna cut it anymore. Time to update the tech-morons who swear by you. Get them out of that 1979 Chevy Chevette and into something more 2011. I know you can do that, can’t you RIM-job?

  • Whiteprelude

Majority of people don’t deny that if the iPhone were to come to Verizon that there wouldn’t be a huge increase in iPhone sales. I get asked at least 20 times a day when the iPhone will come to Verizon with all of these rumors out.

Apple products cannot be Buy One Get One free because Apple is very strict on their pricing. Not because of AT&T or when it’s on Verizon.

    • QNX Please

Apple is on multiple carriers in every other country and still only holds around 25% market share in each country, with Google and RIM exceeding it, having the iPhone on Verizon wont see its share jump drastically, maybe a point or two. Most subscribers will probably migrate from ATT to Verizon, much like how almost 80% of iphone 4 buyers were owners of the iPhone 3GS.

Read this carefully! Apple still rules! Android Sucks! If wasn’t for Apple coming out with the Iphone, half you Android fanboyz would be still using razors, because as much as i could remember, you guy’s always complained about not have a good phone to compete. Every year since the iphone came out, you’ve tried to label every phone as a “iphone killer”. My friend is a prime example. He’s owned every phone from the Instinct, to the palm pre, and now the HTC Evo,you guys had 2-3 good years to create something as good. and guess what? I still have a Iphone, 4 of course. and my friend runs into problems like apps not running because he’s maxed out the memory! WTF is up with that? He still loves the phone That would never happen on a IOS device. And if it wasn’t for Gizmodo ruining the one thing Apple had( the element of surprise), face it, Everybody would be “so last year”. Just wait until the Iphone 4gs or Iphone 5, whatever they decide to call it comes out, your still going to see a line at the Apple store for days! I’ve never seen that at any Android phone release. The only reason your happy now, is because your current phone made your last phone look like $hit!, and you all became phone genius’s overnight once you got a “good” phone. Like Apple said before “The only phone that can beat an Iphone, is the Iphone itself”

The only reason I say the iphone rules is because, (once planetbeing is done) we can install android on iphone and have both os’s! I might be wrong, but I haven’t seen that on any android device.

Oh wait, I did see at least 20 people on line at best buy for the HTC EVO.

At the end of the day pick a phone for what YOU need it for, not for what everybody has! Everybody has their own taste and preferences.

I like things that Android has to offer, but the ease of use of IOS, and knowing that they release a new Android phone like every day, and the fragmentation of the Android OS isn’t cutting it for me. but they again, that’s me!

Like someone posted before me, Competition only lead to innovation. So keep up the good work Google and Apple!

HP and Rim, WTF are you guy’s doing? Microsoft, Throw some front facing cameras on your phones and make a xbox android phone( like the ps3 phone) xbox live is nice, but like with the iphone, nothing makes up for a real controller in your hand, and just maybe you won’t be out for the count.

Nokia! get on the Android bandwagon, or windows phone 7 at least. or both, make a phones that runs your os, android, and wp7 and you’ll be good!

Have a Happy Healthy New Year Everybody!

P.S My Alarm woke my ass up! on January 3rd, so obviously that didn’t affect everybody!

    • Supercop

You forgot to factor in ipad and ipod touch. Which will make the result laughable in the next few quarters when all the Android tablets and mp3 players are counted.

    • MicroNix

Bitter, party of 1, your table is ready.

You are a shining example of why there are fanboys on the Android side. You are the typical, my apple s**t doesn’t stink. Sorry it is raining on your iParade. The party’s over. Suck it up and take it like a man already. ** iOS is no longer king in the US **

In other words, the only person talking about MP3 players and tablets is you.

Fact is, Rim markets to the business sector. Corporations have spent massive amount of money on implementing and maintaining BES servers for their mobile telecommunications. Neither Google nor Apple has or will ever try to scratch that market. Rims infrastructure is a mainstay, while companies and new technology topple over each other. Rim is not going anywhere. Accept it.

As per the base of non cooperation consumers, its graphics and media. Unfortunately, its always “whats new” that dictates that industry’s leader. Apple continues to corner that market. Accept it.
….And It will until something newer, and better comes out that allows people to think on their own again. Meet Droid

Droid is young, fresh and new but Its future is completely dictated by winning the ” Whats New” battle. It’s walking on ice with Stilts. Until it starts maintaining growth like its competitors it is just another pokemon. However, Googles “mobile manufacturing company takeover” gives non corporate consumers a choice. Unfortunately, its only on the cosmetic side of mobile technology. new and prettier phones with no difference in workability. remind you of anyone. Meet Microsoft.

Microsoft, your old, overweight and out of breath in this race. See 90′s Apple. See Future Droid.

    Meet Rim

Android os is on over 180 devices. iOS is on 3 devices. Why is this news??????

Name all 180 devices genius. Come on. Put your money where your big mouth is for once.

ios has 20 versions of the iphone. That’s all generations with their gb choices. Then there’s ipod touch and ipad. iphone was on sale for 2 1/2 years before Android. Android did in one year what it took apple 3 years to do. Better business model. By the way, there are 24 Android phones in the US, not 180.

  • Macboy5

Android is freeware garbage. Slow clucky choppy os. No support from google. I can make a hardware phone and use it. If iOS were on over 200 phones. It would be android who???

  • Miguel.belgium

I am sorry if this is an excessive naif question, but what hapened to Symbian OS? I heard that such a good phone as Nokia N8 works with it…

  • JoeBloggs

android is a great OS and has, in my opinion, forced apple and everyone is to up their game but a few points which people have said before and anyone with reason can see:

    1) Firstly android is out on a ridiculous number of devices, if you look at phone by phone sales I’m fairly certain the iphone would come top in smartphone sales.

    2) As a result of 1), there are now a number of incredibly cheap android smart phones. I am from the UK and the orange san francisco is what we have here which has androd 2.1 and 600mhz processor and has amazing reviews all over the place and is nearly always sold out for only £99, compare that to the 3GS and iPhone 4 at £439, and £510 respectively

    3) As a result of 2), the world economy is a global recession struggling to grow meaning anything priced high in theory is bound to fail and lower priced products sell more but the apple are still breaking profit and revenue records every year, and has seen the iPad be its fastest selling product, I believe that if these OS’s were out 5 years ago then iOS would be far stronger.
    US only
The iPhone is arguably on the worst carrier whereas android is on every carrier, common sense only tells you which one will sell more, infact with the first three points I’m surprised it has taken this long for this to occur in the US, in the UK it is a completely different story as I now see far more iPhones where ever I go, in restaurants, shops and restaurants and I would say blackberry a close second. If I was in school I would most likely see blackberrys more

    • MicroNix

And the carrier limitation is all Apple’s fault. If you don’t offer it elsewhere, you can’t cry about Android being everywhere. Apple has given Google a silver platter without even knowing it. Just goes to show Jobs isn’t *that* smart. I mean who comes out with a revolutionary phone and puts it exclusively on AT&T?? AT&T was a call dropper before the iPhone was even popular. The iPhone just made dropped calls that much more popular.

I think thank Apple makes a huge mistake by only introducing new ohones once a year. Last summer they almost caught up with Android but not quite. Their processors are now extremely slow compared to what was demoed this week at CES. They will have to live with their out-dated hardward until next June just when something will make them obsolete again. How about a quad processor running 1 or 1.2 ghz? Jobs refusal to make a larger phone is already hurting and he refuses to make a smaller tablet. His extreme stubborness caused his to get plowed under my Windows and it will happen again as long as he is in charge. He is a great dreamer but the iphone will go the same route as the Mac.

    • Play!

Same Route as the mac? OKkkkkkk! I’m kinda glad Apple releases phones every year. I’d feel kinda stupid if i bought a android phone, because 1-2 months after you purchase it, your beloved “best android phone” on the market isn’t worth $hit because of the newer one. At least people with iphones, sell them and a reasonably good price to just upgrade to the next.

Also, half the time, all Apple needs to do is send out a update for our phones to do whatever’s new. It make take a while, but when they do it, they do it right.

As besides, everybody who’s hating on Apple now, doesn’t even know what the next iphone is going to have.

This is why all these phone producers are out bragging about their phones now, because once the iphone 4gs or 5 (once again, whatever their gonna call it)comes out, all of the phones mentioned yesterday will most likely be forgotten.

  • Lremy22

You can’t be serious are we failing to mention that Apple has done all of this with just One phone on ONe Carrier! All of you Roids out there no your trembling and fearing the day that the all mighty iPhone goes to other carriers. Roid is spread out across all carriers and 26% is the best they can do!? Come one people wake up! All the Roid is anyway is a cheep imitation of the all mighty iPhone anyway. I mean lets be honest who can name one phone that has not been influenced by the iPhone since its debut? There would be no Roid if it were not for the All Mighty iPhone, there would be no Galaxy Tab if it were not for the Ipad, there would be no Zune if it were not for the iPod, do you see a trend here? When ever Apple does something everyone else copies and then tries to brag not realizing that they are proving the point that Apple is the most original and influential tech biz out there. Come one Roid where is the originality? LoL

    • Supercop

So true, 8 months ago everybody said ipad (tablet) is DOA…Now everybody wants a tablet.

    • Anonymous

No, iphone is 4 phones, arguably 8 with the choices of gb’s, and it built that over 3 years. It took Android 1 YEAR! It’s not our fault apple says no to choice. Originality? The iphone has the same boring ui as it did in 07. The hardware has barely changed. Android has had many features before iphone….has some now that iphone will never have. Fyi, Android was in development long before iphone.

      • Play!

Doesn’t matter! who hit the market first? Also The iphone is on one carrier, and still kicking a$$!

      • Anonymous

It’s on multiple carriers worldwide, Android is kicking ass there too!

    • Play!

Well Said! Your 100% right, but they’ll never see it like that, but it’s the truth. 4 years ago, none of these companies were even known for having a game changing phone. Apple, to me, has been setting the bar, and everybody is still trying to do pullups!

  • FatMatt

As a multi-platform (iOS, RIM, Win7,UBuntu) user (who appreciates the good points in all those operating systems), some of you posters come across as complete whackos.

Get a life and evaluate the platform rather than just shitcanning it. And that goes for the Android and Apple fanboys.

Oh, and I’m not subscribing to the comments or visiting again to see responses, so do your best….

And when a decent Android tablet turns up in Australia, I’ll be the first to buy it.
