LG introduces next generation smartphone design and display with LG Optimus Black

New LG Optimus Black Delivers Breakthrough NOVA Display Technology in the World’s Slimmest Smartphone Device

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2011 – LG Electronics (LG) announced today it will unveil a new Android smartphone, LG Optimus Black, at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 6th in Las Vegas. Providing users with a dramatically brighter 4-inch NOVA display in the world’s slimmest 9.2 mm mobile device, LG Optimus Black creates a one-of-a-kind user experience unlike anything before.

Available for the first time in the mobile market, LG Optimus Black’s NOVA display is designed to be the brightest, clearest and most readable among mobile screens with 700 nits  of brightness for optimal visibility. LG Optimus Black provides users with an easier and more natural experience when browsing the web, reading emails, or writing documents with higher levels of brightness and pure white tones that deliver true black and white colors for ideal handset viewing. NOVA technology featured on LG Optimus Black also enables users to maintain visibility whether indoors or outdoors under strong sunlight.

In addition to greater luminosity, the NOVA display on LG Optimus Black also radically reduces power consumption by 50 percent during general indoor use compared to a conventional LCD. Similarly, AMOLED consumes twice as much power as NOVA to display a full white screen, the most frequently used color scheme for web browsing. Combined with the 1500 mAh battery of the LG Optimus Black, users will have enough power for their daily needs, even at maximum brightness settings.

Users will never be out of style with the LG Optimus Black’s ultra slim 9.2 mm design. Making a strong visual statement, LG Optimus Black weighs only 109g and offers sleek lines and smooth edges that improve handheld grip. Tapering down to the world’s thinnest smartphone profile of 6.0 mm, LG Optimus Black’s subtle back arch helps to create the illusion of even greater slimness.  Unique to the LG Optimus Black, the flush and flawless finish of the front display is achieved by innovatively hiding the Invisible Receiver behind the edges of the phone.

“We are excited to introduce this stylish new Android smartphone and expect the LG Optimus Black to play a key role in the mobile market,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG Optimus Black reflects our core strengths of advanced technology, in both display and design, offering the world’s brightest screen and the world’s slimmest design in an attractive and smart package.”

The LG Optimus Black also offers a set of smarter features designed for easy and faster access to important apps and content. Optimus UI 2.0 lets users directly access messages, emails and missed calls from the locked screen with just one single finger tap. The Gesture UI offers more intuitive commands, including lifting, shaking and tapping, for taking calls, entering camera mode, or enjoying music. LG Optimus Black also introduces the world’s first Wi-Fi Direct™  for quick and high-quality data transfer between mobile devices and adopts the world’s first 2MP front-facing camera.

All LG Optimus Black features are available on the Android 2.2 Froyo platform with Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade capability. Utilizing the 2MP front-facing camera, LG Optimus Black allows users to utilize video telephony functions of higher quality after upgrading to Android’s Gingerbread.

The LG Optimus Black will be rolled out globally in the first half of 2011.

…and this will be rolled out to which carrier? The display looks like a clone of the Samsung Galaxy.

Since it mentioned globally, I have a feeling it might be a GSM carrier first! So T-Mo has a better chance of picking this up from its history of Android love but I will be surprised if this ends up with ATT.

More importantly: what will that carrier do to the phone before they let their customers have it?!

  • palomosan

This is a nice looking phone but why Android 2.2 when 2.3 it’s already out.

They don’t mention if it’s LTE, 4G, more details please.

    • Bringit

You know why. The usual suspect – fragmentation.

That’s one thin smartphone! It’s like Christian Bale on ‘The Machinist’

That does look like quite a nice handset but “2.3 Gingerbread upgrade capability” sounds ominously vague. Especially considering android 3.0 will be just round the corner when LG release this

  • Booboolala2000

It’s LTE and it’s on Verizon.

You can see in the photo(if it’s an official photo, anyway) that it has an E for data, this for EDGE aka GSM… I hope it comes to T-Mobile (and that it doesn’t get IMEI blocked like Samsung devices)… looks nice.

“Upgrade capability” huh? Gee, thanks for advising us that a phone announced a month after 2.3 was announced is “capable” of an upgrade. Of course, this doesn’t mean they’ll ever upgrade it, but if your dumb enough to let them pull one over on you, you’ve got bigger problems than being stuck on 2.2.

The phone was developed well before 2.3 came out, but while it was going under finishing touches and pre-release testing, LG clearly claims to have been porting over their UI and testing it with 2.3 on this device.

Even then, 2.3 isn’t even complete yet – like with the Original Droid, Eclair (2.1) was released as 2.0 on the Droid but was incomplete for around five months.

Looks like a really nice phone…and before the apple fanboys come on and start bashing this phone, LG actually supplies the beautiful retina displays on the iPhone.

  • Steel

Apparently the phone is upgrade-capable, but LG’s engineers are not.

I don’t buy phones that ship with outdated OS’s.

  • Redline78

Looking closely at the very left phone pic, it shows “E” so I assume it is going to be a GSM phone? I hope AT&T get this phone. AT&T needs more good Android phone.

If you zoom in on the picture on the right it looks like an “H”. I am going to guess T-Mobile HSPA+

  • Donny

I see another asian manufacture decided to go with the “look exactly like the iphone” model. Neat.

  • Spdr-Mn

Pretty cool, but it looks like a Galaxy S device. All these phones are starting to look too similar.

  • Anonymous

Oops. It wasn’t the “thinnest” phone for very long! (See Sony Experia story above.)

  • XxXDroidXxX

Damn it, I wanted the Black one friken Vz

I’m more interested in the weather skin he is running

The Invisible Receiver thing is intriguing. Also, they talked a ton about the screen, thickness/thinness and front cam without really saying much. So what is the Carrier? Sprint? T-Mobile? Like the other Optimus phones. What about the processor, memory, rear cam, etc.?

  • http://twitter.com/llsethj Seth Weintraub

errr. World’s thinnest for like 10 minutes. The AT&T Samsung monster is only 9.0 mm.

It looks like a copy of the Vibrant.
