CES begins on 5 January 2010 when Steve Balmer deems that it has begun (by delivering the opening speech)… what starts tomorrow, on the 6th, is they let average idiot in the doors instead of only press… aka, the public.
Ahhmer
It’s about time! Even MetroPCS has 4G before AT&T! LOL
Anonymous
They will still be way behind Sprint and Verizon
Anonymous
Yet you still won’t be able to make a call and use data at the same time on either..LOL
Anonymous
With 4G on Sprint i can use data and talk at the same time just fine..LOL
Anonymous
4G isn’t in all areas…LOL…and it costs extra…LOL
Tee
I love how you bring up a feature only available on 3G WCDMA as being this thing that’s existed forever instead of the past 2 years, and barely at all to that degree – for 6 months on a more national scale would be more accurate. Go try to accomplish that feat on GSM’s “3G” service called EDGE, which is what “97% of all Americans” have access to and let me know it works for ya… and then let me know why, oh why, the GSM Association abandoned GSM the technology in favor for WCDMA and now LTE.
Anonymous
GSM (the protocol) only switched its air interface from TDMA to WCDMA (wide-band cdma). CDMA existed a very long time, and WCDMA longer than 3 years. DoCoMo (the Japanese phone guys) pioneered it and made it a world standard for 3G.
GSM didn’t abandon anything as you describe it except for TDMA.
Anonymous
Tell me how that feature works when you’re outside of 3G zones.
Anonymous
I didn’t say it was available in all areas, but it’s available in my area so that’s what I care about…LOL
And 10 bux isn’t breaking me, still cheaper than at&t…LOL
And at&t’s 3G which is needed to talk & surf at the same time isn’t available in all areas either…LMAO!

Hmmm Goold Ole Boy Genius… The reason I keep coming back is because you guys seem to have the type of SPies no one else has… Only thing left is to keep the site …..updated please!….

Do you have a time? I looked at the CES press conference schedule and didn’t see them on there.
Jrenz81
Wrong. At&t’s rollout of LTE will be much easier than say, Verizon. That’s why they haven’t been concerned with being first.
dagamer34
It’s much easier than a network that’s already been running with customers for a month? Do explain that one to me.
Anonymous
If I recall, once the backhaul was in place, the transition to LTE was more of flipping a switch for AT&T as they’ve been putting the hardware aside the 3G tech for at least the last year or so. It wouldn’t surprise me to see AT&T close to VZ in LTE coverage in the next few months.
dagamer34
AT&T’s problem has been backhaul the entire time. That’s why whenever you try to use an iPhone in a heavily crowded place, nothing besides SMS gets through. That’s exactly my point.
Anonymous
re: dagamer34: This is where I somewhat disagree. I travel a lot for work, and am in the city frequently. I can be tethered to my berry getting great speeds while an iPhone user sitting right next to me has issues.
I’m not saying AT&T is perfect – no carrier is. But I truly believe the iPhone has some issues, especially in congested areas. Heck, the thing couldn’t even negotiate a wifi connection when it was presented the first time due to “too much wifi” …huh?
Monique
yeah, explain how it would be easier. It took at&t how long to build out their 3G network and it’s still isn’t as expansive as Sprint or Verizon. So, I suspect that their rollout of LTE will be much of the same….
Anonymous
Verizon has a totally different network. They built from the ground up. AT&Ts network is already in the LTE family. As stated by Facebook AT&T reps. They have already laid 80% of the backhaul and changed the antennas. In order for AT&T to lite up LTE it’s a software update to the tower and flipping a switch. And people can add all they want but this is coming straight from AT&T on Facebook.

They drop calls and data connections perfectly with 36. Do they really need LTE in order to continue that?
Anonymous
Wow…still pushing that drivel. Been on AT&T for years, and never had a dropped call. Yet, Verizon and Sprint in my area rarely ever gave me more than 2 bars, and crappy calls.
Tee
Bars mean nothing on CDMA, a call will be completed with 0 bars… in fact, bars mean nothing in general. It’s a math calculation that is based on the actual signal strength, the -dBm… and no two phone makers illustrate bars the same way.
Anonymous
Never had a dropped call for years? Guessing you just like to look at your phone then rather than use it, all carriers/handsets drop a call from time to time and regardless of what you say, you’re no exception.
AnnDroid
Get ready to bend over. (left at&t, now on Sprint’s unlimited=love)
Anonymous
another network that at&t will f**k up
Al
cracks me up that they invest billions into uverse and get 3 million customers in 3 years. where cingular pulled in 50 million in 2 years for half the cost. now they decided to invest in 4g after everyone else on a product that matters so much more. how dumb can they be seriously. who gives a crap if you can record 4 shows for double the price. 4g is what people care about not tv.
Yup
also love how they tied everyone into a contract with the unlimited data plan. you wont leave at&t because if you do youll never get your unlimited data plan back. likelihood of a subscriber leaving with a smart phone just dropped dramatically. without a contract…..genius.
Gcombs11
More options for the consumer. I’m glad AT&T will be rolling it out this year to see what type of speeds their LTE network will have and see who has the fastest and most reliable 4G in the U.S.
Franchise66
There plans are to announce that they are still years behind VZW in “4G” and that their network will never be #1!
Spdr-Mn
Alright!
a$$clown
Att is currently deploying LTE. Their hand was forced due to Verizon’s deployment. I know for a fact that they have been running fiber to their cell sites in my area for LTE. As for 3G Att just lit it up here this past holliday season. Better now than never I guess.
Spdr-Mn
Sometimes I wonder, if at&t would have never had the iPhone and instead had the best ANDROID phones, would people commenting on these blogs still constantly bash at&t with the excuse of its network?
