Nintendo DS becomes best-selling video game system of all time in U.S.

Gaming

Today, Nintendo announced that its popular line of DS handheld gaming systems have become “the nation’s best-selling video game system of all time.” With sales of over 47 million units since its release in 2004, the DS passes Sony’s PlayStation 2 to claim the top spot. The company also noted that its Wii console sold more than 7 million units for the third consecutive year in a row, a feat Nintendo brags has “never before been accomplished in the history of video games by a home console.”

“When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products,” said President of Nintendo America, Reggie Fils-Aime. “When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed.”

Nintendo is expected to release its 3DS portable gaming system this March.

I do not think handhelds should be in the same category as a console. And the Wii sucks too. Who wants only 480p games, crappy motion control and kids games. Xbox and PS3 all they way!

Hmmmm, maybe 76 million people want it?

maybe people who don’t want to pay out the @$$ for a next-gen console? Come on, it took them YEARS to offer these things at a reasonable price. The DS is wildly popular because if follows the classic Nintendo formula: Inexpensive hardware/games, amazingly addictive gameplay, and portability. 480p is enhanced definition, and if you tell me you can see the difference between 720p and 480p on a screen that size then you’re a moron.
