Root keys for Sony’s PlayStation 3 go public

Famed iOS hacker geohot is utilizing his talents to aid the tinkering community of another platform, the PlayStation 3. Mr. Hotz has successfully acquired and published the root keys used by Sony’s popular gaming console, opening the door to custom software and ROMs. On his site, geohot has noted that he does not condone piracy in anyway and wouldn’t mind being “on the other side” — perhaps an offer to work for/with Sony?       But as a non Apple customer i would buy stuff if Geohot worked for apple and they allowed him to tinker with their product and thus allowed the customers to do the same, i’d own apple. Untill that day i am stuck with Google’s Android.

        Well I do own apple products and honestly I’m happier that geo is on hacking community’s side. Seriously all apple would do is use him to lock iDevices down even further! Also without people like geo I wouldnt own a iPhone, there’s no way I’d use it without a jailbreak. If I had more money I’d be rocking an android phone too and while my service is a bit worse with AT&T where I just moved to I’ll probably never drop them cause I use way too much data and I love my grandfathered unlimited plan! That being said I really would like to AT&T beef up it’s android offerings!

    Could you imagine how much more difficult this kind of thing would be if geohot (and others of his caliber) were working for the big boys?

    Looks like it was pretty stupid of Sony to have closed the “Install other OS” option on the PS3.

    I suspect GH wouldn’t have released these keys otherwise.
